Sleight of hand
Perhaps Dido is set up as the scapegoat, she cannot fall further in terms of tech opprobrium.
In which case, what else is going on ?

It's standard practice in firmware code, where it's possible to brick a device, to flag a new download as "on trial". Once processing the new file has been deemed successful, it's marked as being OK.
On a subsequent boot, downloads still marked as On trial are deemed faulty, and to be ignored from then on.
I worked at Ubiquisys in its early days, ten people or so in a Regus office.
There was definitely version control (Subversion) and unit+integration+system testing. Of course, product versioning is possibly a different matter.
So what happened in the later years, after my one-year stint, I don't know.
