iOS 9 kludged our iPhones, now give us money, claims new lawsuit

Steveir

I find it really ironic that while reading the article safari on my ipad2 running ios 9.2 crashed...and it doesnt normally do so here on el Reg!

It happens a lot and it Safari that is the issue....well maybe not Safari itself just the massive overexposure we're now getting on the web of advertising. I read that if i was wealthy enough to own an ipad air id be able to install adblockers....

Overall though, my ipad 2 does run ok, its just said issues in Safari with overladen with advert websites

BT to gobble EE for £12.5bn – BTEE phone home

Phew...sort of

I was with O2 when they were bt cellnet, they were ok but much better as O2.

The only problem now is that 3 have said they would go after the network that bt didn't go for. I had the misfortune to have a 3 phone a few years back and my experience wasnt good...hopefully they'll forget about it

El Reg in possession horror by Office 2013

Whoa, you guys have been completely office 2013'd with not even a dark grey theme to help!

I first saw the refreshed site on my iPad and ive got to admit it looks not too bad. Got to viewing it in my laptop earlier today running at 1366x whatever the other number is and...well....lets just say it looks....bad.

First off I like the new header on both forms. I do like the idea someone suggested on one of the earlier pages of this thread suggesting moving the logo to the left and moving the new menu and search bar into the red area.

The menu itself? Doesn't really annoy me being there and the caps doesn't look too bad but agree with the accessibility issues listed.

The lead story picture: okay, this looks fine on my iPad but on laptop it means the actual articles start just before the edge of the browser window which breaks one of the rules I learnt from a computing lecturer at uni, don't make the user scroll. On the old site there was a lot of articles showing before you had to scroll for more...now it's just making the user exert more effort, and a lot of the time they simply won't be arsed. Also the size of the picture makes the site just look plain ugly...and is a bit caps lock shouty to me!

The articles: this is where the site really does go very wrong for me..on both iPad and laptop. I think the different colour headline to the additional smaller text was great for browsing the home page for articles and it definitely needs to come back because at the moment I look at the page and things all blur into one. The contrasting colours made each story stand out. I really think that you at risk of people missing good articles because of this. Take today for example, normally I'd go along each row looking for a good headline, today I actually SKIM READ yhe home page and read maybe one article. Also it's really hard to distinguish read articles with the new grey colour, blue was much better.

The actual story pages aren't too much different, head picture isn't too oversized but would looks better a tad smaller. The text is fine, black works when reading an article, not in a three columed, row based headline format.

That's about all I can offer but I will say that this talk about the print button is really reminding me of microsoft and the start button/menu fiasco

Sonic the Hedgehog

I've never really liked sonic cd personally, even now after getting it on my phone, although this time its more down to the fact ive just played both sonic 4s and keep trying to do a homing attack...and loosing rings/life in the process. Speaking of homing attack, i STILL havent completed sonic heroes because of the bit in mystic mansion act 2 where to have to use homing attack to get across a void via pumpkin heads, works so well in 2d, sucks in 3d does homing attack.

My favourite sonic would have to be the combined sonic 3 & knuckles

Office 2013 now available for some home users

The landing screen

Dunno if this is of use but certainly in group policy for office 2013 there is an option for starting on the usual screen and not the landing screen...might be in options in word etc.

Been trialing it on several machines and the staff seem to like it, even the brilliant white screen which suprised me. I switched to dark grey straight away, hard on the eyes. Other than that gripe i quite like it. Some nice touches especially opening pdfs.

Windows 8 is another issue altogether.....tifkam would cause chaos.

Outlook 2013 spurns your old Word and Excel documents

Steveir

I've been testing office 2013 for a few weeks now, both on my work laptop, the workstations in my room and a couple of staff machines...I've had nothing but good comments about it. Outlook seems to be opening/previewing .doc and .xls files normally. Only problem I've had is on one machine where pptx files that have been emailed show as corrupted even if they have been saved locally first. I did side by side it with office 2010 on that machine thought so it could be that.,.

My first phone was a Phillips C12 on BTCellnet....with the scrappy doo tune text noise youn couldnt change....2 lines of text and the "game" was Biorhythms. Best phone, sony erricsson w800i, had that for 5 years. Worst would be the last phone...nokia 5800...so slow! Currently got a s2...love it but it still doesnt beat the sony
