Any social media accounts to declare? US wants travelers to tell

Adam JC

Re: its optional....

You do realise your comment being posted as AC carries a hefty level of irony along with it, right?

You've totally missed the point, what we're saying is that some people either can't remember or flat out don't know some of the questions. If you opt not to have a social media account, you're likely to be given the third degree upon entry as (Surely!) everyone has a Facebook account, right?!

As a self-respecting British citizen with nothing to hide; a perfectly clean criminal record and a desire to visit the USA one day (In-fact I'd like to have our honeymoon there next year), I have to say that my desire is rapidly diminishing after reading things like this....

Amazon warns you have 30 days before Music Storage files bloodbath

Adam JC

Re: Too expensive for Amazon

I'm afraid my opinion differs, I recently bought the £14.99 spotify 'family' pack (5x Spotify subscriptions), I gave my business partner & his other half a subscription, my better half and myself also had a subscription and also to my grandma as she doesn't get about much and enjoys music.

That equates to £3 a month (Less than the cost of a single album). I listen to the service almost all day at work and also whilst doing service calls in my van. My music habits tend to be quite varied and in all honesty, If I were to purchase all the music I listened to (Even if I only ever listened to it once then never again) I'd have spent a phenomenal amount of money. I appreciate that I don't *OWN* the music, I am simply paying for access to the catalogue but that suits me well, just because it doesn't suit one persons ideology, others (Such as myself) may have a totally different view. £3 is about the same price you'd spend on a MoccaChoccaLatteFrappaChino from <Insert overpriced 'trendy' coffee chain here>.

Like it or lump it, almost everything is going subscription-based - Adobe, Office, Music, TV - I envisage a future where you won't be able to buy tracks and albums in the current way that we've been able to previously and subscription-based is the only way to go for future releases. I have to admit I can't remember the last time I purchased a physical CD and infact my most recently purchased vehicle had the CD player as an 'optional extra', even then it was relegated to hiding in the glove box!

Mythical broadband speeds to plummet in crackdown on ISP ads

Hey, you know why it's called the iPhone X? When you see Apple's repair bill, your response will be X-rated

Re: The Need For Speed

Those are AMERICAN dollars (AUD), not USD.

$419 AUD = $320 USD

$819 AUD = $628 USD

Still expensive, but the AUD price of an iPhone X is $1579 AUD ($1211 USD) - Seems the ozzies are paying a hefty markup!

Taken a while but finally here's the first proper smart-home gizmo

Adam JC

HomePlug?

I'm just thinking out loud here, but with the massive widespread use of HomePlug, why aren't router(s) readily available with the tech built in? The last home router I saw with HomePlug (85mbps in the early days I believe) available was the ZyXEL NBG318S. I don't think I've seen one since, but it would be silly especially as these devices are all connected directly to the electricity.

I had a CT scan when my bowel perforated at Christmas, my first one infact. I like to think I'm okay with most medical procedures but the noise those things make and the fact you're so close to it is actually quite un-nerving and uncomfortable. Adam JC

Re: Battery life

After having installed 30x optical zoom PTZ CCTV cameras at an airfield, I can attest that even with the strongest/sturdiest of mounts, at 30x full zoom the amount of 'wind wobble' can be significant. I can only imagine that on a drone susceptible to wind wobble at great height, this would present a fairly major issue!

Re: The Need For Speed

A USB stick can be lost, I prefer a cloudy app to store it (Whether it's KeePass on Dropbox, OneDrive, etc) or LastPass in the cloud. You keep your KeePass file locally and your SSD bites the dust... boom, chaos.

As I understand it, your 'vault' is encrypted in-situ on LastPass' server and even they can't access it, so even if their servers were ransacked, there's no way to get in unless they have your master password.

Boeing and Airbus fly new planes for first time

Adam JC

Re: Yes, they look beautiful

I fear economy of scale (number of passengers) makes this financially unviable. Nobody will pay £1500+ for a flight that would ordinarily cost then £50 and so on. Uber for planes already kind-of exists, but the costing is exorbitant. The chances of finding 7-8 people at a tiny local airport going to the same location as you is also questionable.

Re: The Need For Speed

I can see a lot of comments on here about Smart Meters going nowhere near their network. Smart Meters use ZigBee to communicate with the little in-house display gadgets and don't go anywhere near your home network to be fair. They use HAN/ZigBee to talk to other smart meter(s) nearby. The WAN side is over the mobile network for connectivity, so SmartMeter's are the exception to the IoT drama for now, although I believe they would like to tap into dishwashers/dryers/washing machines/fridges etc in the future via ZigBee and whatnot to utilise surplus energy.

Whilst there's no 'logic', I'm afraid they do.. All the big players do... (Bar Zen/aaisp) - In fact, BT/Sky won't even give you a static IP on a residential line if you PAY them. You'll need to switch to a business package for that (Of which Sky don't even offer, might I add).

Ubiquiti network gear can be 'hijacked by an evil URL' – thanks to its 20-year-old PHP build

Adam JC

Re: Pay peanuts

What exactly do you mean by the 'security and functionality' aspect? I'm able to use my own Thawte/Verisign SSL certificate to encrypt all traffic between the AP's we deploy and the controller. Don't see an issue with the security there.

As for functionality, can you list anything specifically that the kit is lacking? I've not come across a scenario where the Ubiquiti kit can't do the same as it's much more expensive Cisco/Meraki/Aruba equivalent couldn't. (That's not to say I haven't used alternative brand kit out of personal preference sometimes regardless - I personally quite like the LigoWave/Deliberant Mach5 kit for some long range PTP link installs)

Lastly, I think you'll find all the vendors have some form of their own take on 'standardisation' - Cisco, Meraki, Aruba all insist on you using their OWN cloudy hosting systems and charge a fee as such. And proprietary hardware? They use the same chips as everyone else.. Atheros AR-series chips for WiFi in the UniFi AP's for instance.. nothing proprietary there.

Adam JC

Re: The Need For Speed

Whilst MikroTik do WiFi via routerboard, etc - It's not in the same league of the UniFi kit in terms of mass-management. (Obviously the MiktoTik kit is much more feature-packed with RouterOS).

The attraction with the Ubiquiti managed AP's is that you can manage hundreds, or even thousands from a central point and there's no fees as with Cisco, Meraki et al. It knocks the socks off other vendors for cost-per-AP when it comes to function vs price.

We've deployed just under 800 AP's to-date along with using their other PTP hardware and it's a refreshingly pleasant experience deploying the kit whether you're dropping one in a small office or deploying 20 in a hotel - It's literally childs play if you're even remotely competent in I.T which is why a lot of people like it. Despite this, some deployments still demand Ruckus or Cisco but for the bulk of it, Ubiquiti kit tends to be more than capable of most things.

Re: The Need For Speed

Fortunately with the advent of FTTC that became a thing of the past. FTTC orders have a 'minimum' speed and a 'maximum' speed denoted when your order is finalised, I think it's perfectly fair for a TV advert to say 'up to' 40Mbps DEPENDING ON LOCATION - Then receiving a tailored speed to expect after you place the order.
