How Rogue One's Imperial stormtroopers SAVED Star Wars and restored order

DaveNullstein

I preferred last years film. It was a blatant homage to the first movie but it worked and I smiled.

Rouge 1 just feels like just another CGI action/comic book movie. It raised more questions than it answered. The multi-cultural cast was good (if not calculated for global profit) but not the story.

But then none of the Star Wars stories are truly good. We are all chasing the nostalgic dreams of our adolescent selves.

If you don't think a huge segment of the human race needs nannying then you obviously haven't been paying attention.

I want to learn about gamification but all I see is same-ification

DaveNullstein

Re: Huh?

"Gamification has nothing to do with games. It's about taking something inherently boring, and making it fun in a dopamine pathway / skinner box way."

This. It is on par with adding more nicotine to cigarettes. Or worse, adding nicotine to ice cream. IT IS EVIL... for the most part.

Music's value gap? Follow the money trail back to Google

DaveNullstein

Finding it hard to give a shit.

On the one hand, I do believe that nobody but the artist(s) should be making money off of You Tube music "videos", though perhaps Google deserves a tiny bit to cover hosting costs.

On the other hand fuck the record industry (and IP owners in general) who think they are entitled to a near perpetual right to profit from work done once (and often, work done by someone else).

I would think there's some marketing value in the illicit You Tube versions of songs which really makes your entire argument somewhat moot. Nobody who can afford not to (or knows where to get the good stuff) is building their music collection by ripping YT videos.

Ultimately though, I view the entire internet as a hyper efficient library and don't feel much remorse about what I check out. I also occasionally go to movies and concerts and even purchase albums and books from time to time. No guilt here. If we are going to feel sorry for someone in the IP creation business, I'd worry more about the writers than anyone else. I think they are the most screwed in the long term. However, making sharing illegal is not and never will be a viable solution.

Gaming culture is toxic

I say this as a 50 year old male gamer who cut my teeth on pong and now plays Titanfall. It just keeps getting worse.

I hold the industry complicit in catering to (what I hope is just a loud minority, but probably not) of entitled, amoral, misogynist, and possibly psychopathic, gamer assholes.

He loses a few points for the ad thing but I still love him.

My cat could predict that there will be a surge in last-minute upgrades.

Why the 'Dancing Baby' copyright case is just hi-tech victim shaming

DaveNullstein

You wanna talk about fair?

Intellectual Property is based on the premise that an IP owner deserves repeated income for work done once. This income already continues past the original creator's lifespan in many cases, and would likely continue in perpetuity should some have their way. This is fundamentally unfair to those of us who only get paid once for the work we do.

The whole concept is flawed and it's hard to have any sympathy for corporations or very wealthy individuals who own much of this IP, especially after the 'ownership' of said IP was transferred (probably a mistake to allow this in the first place) from the original creator.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Rupert Murdoch says Google is worse than the NSA

DaveNullstein

Re: Google is not opt-in.

I agree that Google may kill us all when/once it falls into the wrong hands however, at this point they are still mostly trustworthy and all of their spying is done by algorithms. What we need are laws & mechanisms to ensure it stays that way.

DaveNullstein

Only if you're a pedophile.

Please elaborate, Rupert....

Snark aside, I'll take my chances with Google over a shadowy, prone-to-lying and off-the-leash intelligence organization any day. At least I can opt out of Google.

Windows 8: An awful lot of change for a single release

DaveNullstein
FAIL

Oh Please....

"This is Microsoft's third major attempt to fix Windows security, if you count Windows XP SP2 as the first, and Vista's UAC as the second. It brings in a new platform in which apps are sandboxed and installed from Microsoft's store, imitating Apple's model. "

If you think we're getting the Microsoft store due to security concerns you are delusional. Any security benefits will be purely incidental. Windows 8 is far more about giving Microsoft what it wishes it had than it is about giving users what they want.
