Windows 8 unleashed! Midnight launch for world+dog

Re: Someone please...and so on and why is the title now too long?

@ sabroni

He was suggesting a toggle button to do it all at once. Very good suggestion, don't know why it never occured to me. But in case you don't know, when we - probably most of us - work on various significant others' machines, we want to see file extensions, hidden and system files, all folders etc etc. You appear to have totally missed the meaning of the comment. You toggle expert features on. Fix machine. Toggle expert features back off. Perhaps you thought it was something to do with duffle coats?

- Mr Ballmer, you remind me of a twat!

- What twat?

- The twat with the power?

- What power?

- The power of Hoodoo doo-doo

- Hoodoo doo-doo?

- You do.

- Do what?

- Remind me of a twat!

- What twat?

...and so on ad infinitum...

Yes. Well, the way my ex put it, was that I don't suffer fools gladly.

Re: expect techies to neuter the Win8 experience

"MS will make their usual mistake of assuming folk are still using the bad features and must love them to not complain."

Yes. Running the Enterprise 90 day trial (third time I've run 8, so vague impressions are coalescing into firm opinions). This is the first time I've run with 'Classic Shell', the installation of which made me think 'Windows 8 - any colour you like as long as it's black' (to paraphrase). Next I thought - might have occured earlier but so automatic after all these years it barely registers on consciousness - that the forcing Metro on PC users is a bit like the way MS still have all those fucking awful sounds and animation/fade/slide effects enabled by default, which I disable as about the first thing I do after any Windows install. And while plenty of non-geek users apparently don't even realize you can turn that shit off, there are actually some who don't mind it!

But at least you have the option to turn that shit off. The sounds annoy me - like people using mobile phones on trains annoy me (particularly in the Quiet Zone coaches); while the visuals are like a far off echo of the nausea I recall from too long playing Wolf 3D.

I think Henry Ford had some justification for Ford's lack of choice, given how new his industry was at the time. Microsoft, oth, for not providing the choice of a Start Menu instead of the Start Screen - imho - can go swivel.

I once broke a cordless handset throwing it against the wall trying to get through to them back when I was with Tiscali broadband (briefly the only option besides Tesco at a previous address. And I'd already ditched Tesco). Satisfying as it was, I've resisted the temptation to do it again, which given that the phone side was still provided by BT...

Gee it's been a satisfying few years since being free of that bunch of showers of bastards! And my various handsets thank me daily.

I think the fact is, really,

that the Home Office is - and has been for quite a time - a puppet of the Security Services.

And yesterday's extradition denial was just a diversionary tactic, because most people ache to implicitly trust State institutions and could be on the verge of revolt one moment then fawning with gratitude the next thanks to an empty gesture, and all of the evil organisations of the world know this, including the British Government.

'If someone were to fire a gun on the French side of the Rhine and deliberately kill someone on the German side, in which country would/should they be tried for murder?'

In a sane and just world, the French side. The French should consider it as serious an offence as the Germans (and some might say they are), while the Germans should trust the French to see that Justice is indeed done.

On the other hand, in a land that doesn't 'get' that there is no place for revenge in 'Justice'...

Another way to put it

Left-leaning types believe in truth; unfortunately being human their bias creeps in anyway (like some neurotransmitter equilibrium shifting to permit them to say what in their hearts they want to). Right-leaning types don't believe in truth.

I should say the point is softening up the average voter for the Interception Modernisation Whatever they're calling it now. When the average voter next hears about everything they do online being recorded and all of their email being read, by the State, they'll think it must be justified, because 'we' lead the world in cybersecurity.
