Re: instant fail Sulfuric acid and 50% Hydrogen Peroxide.

AKA Piranha. I used to use it when I had a different job in the Semiconductor industry. It gets very hot and will destroy anything organic. It was used to clean the wafers before certain steps.

By accident one day a worker mixed Hydrofluoric acid with 50% Hydrogen Peroxide instead of Hydrochloric acid. It attacked the ceramic bath but didn't eat through.

How did he mix them up? He didn't speak or read English and grabbed the wrong bottles.

Review: Renault Zoe electric car

Count me out

I own a 2003 Honda Insight Hybrid. For the second time I am replacing the Batteries. No control module this time. I am lucky. Honda did a recall a few years ago and part of the recall upped the battery warranty to ten years. If it had failed three weeks in the future I would be looking at a $4000 repair bill on a car with 100,000 miles on it.

Oh, and don't even think about running it without the battery. The alternator doesn't work when the battery fails. I have a second car or I would be looking for transportation until the battery gets here.

Re: Blackboard patent( you haven't been following patent law)

The new U.S. Patent law is first to file not first to create. It doesn't protect the inventor at all.

Originally in order to patent a device you had to bring in a working model. Blackboard patents were not allowed. This is why Alexander Graham bell actually had to have a working phone before he could patent it. The theory was already there.

Your post is inaccurate.

Hud Dunlap

Blackboard patent

So what I am reading is that CMU came up with a theoretical method for doing something but never actually were able to make a real device. The is very much like Richard Feynmans patent on the nuclear submarine (read "surely you are joking Mr. Feynman").

Just because CMU is a university with lots of Government funding doesn't mean that they are not a vapor ware firm.

New transistor tech could beat silicon and save Moore's Law

Hud Dunlap
Coat

Where are you going to get the equipment to run the wafers.

Silicon wafers are generally eight inch in diameter with twelve inch becoming common and sixteen being talked about. It has been awhile since I worked with Gallium Arsinide but I don't recall anyone running any thing bigger than six inch. The new tools move wafers a lot faster than the old tools. I don't think Gallium Arsinide can handle the stress. Currently Gallium Arsinide is run on older, slower tool sets. Then you have die size issues. Your yield is going to be terrible on the smaller wafers.

All in all I can see some of the current Gallium arsinide fabs running specialty chips but I can't see the big production houses doing it.

Hud Dunlap

I don't have a heavy foot.

It is the air conditioner, which runs most of the time in Texas. The Air Conditioners don't run on the EPA test. Actually some people with hibrids say you get better milage with a heavy foot because you actually use the battery. Mine stays 100% charge 95% of the time. At 90000 miles I am getting ready to have my second set of batteries put in.

The of the original poster was that you could trust the EPA numbers. The reality is you can't.

The new U.S. patent law will stop this

There were a number of posts to El Reg about this, U.S. Patent law is no longer based on the inventor but first to file. If they didn't get a patent first and Google took what they showed them and filed for a patent, then they are SOL.

Re: rather insulting headline

Mr Grease monkey.

You may not advise me to check UK slang. This term was used in reference to Americans in an American city. How people in the UK refer to their police is not something that is of interest to me. We also have the terms fuzz and pig and those went out in the seventies. Yes I am aware that a lot of the police in any locality are just criminals with badges. I also know that a lot of them are hard working people who try to make the community better, some time they die in the process.

The headline is completely out of line. I notice that none of El Regs people have bothered to reply.
