i drive a bmw. everyone knows bmw drivers are assholes. so i go out of my way to be nice to people when i drive, that is the only way i can influence others peoples perception of bmw drivers. its the only way i can personally bring BMW drivers to be more equal in the "percentage of bmw drivers that are assholes " equality stakes. i can directly influence the number of arseholes who drive BMW's by one. by doing it myself.
if you want to go on, as a white male/ white woman / black woman / pakistani male / black male etc etc oh god the permutations go on and on, about there not being enough of "them" or "you" in x,y,z then go and do x,y or z and get the numbers up by one.
ok, this is on the fly here, but so , what about the percentage of people who drive pink BMW's?
so lets say they produce 10 colours. should there be 10% of bmw cars that are pink? of course not. should we consider enforcing every 10th bmw is pink? no. why arent 10% of bmw's pink? because people are different. groups of people are different. they actually are different in what they like and what they choose
just upgraded to 152mb bb with virgin. was promised "between 10 and 20 mb" up. im getting 8 up (im geting 160 down which is awesome though)
i run a vpn into here, so i wanted the extra upstream grunt.
had engineer out (for a different reason - V+ box hard disk gone to shit again....was only replaced 3 months ago!) and he checked the signal and said thats is really good, but that round here you will not go over 8mb up.
so...a bit peed off but may well just keep it anyway. i only had 2 up before.
apparantly they are overhauling the trunk round here in a few months so you never know...
Re. Linux imaging.
whoop do fucking do. Back in 1999 me and a colleague invented a system that you could phone up and it would image up to 400 pc's with the customer image of your choice whilst engineers were driving to the site for a disaster recovery emergency. Call at 4am...we need to get set up now for, say, chase manhatten. . Call MARVIN. Marvin images machines whilst you drink coffee and get clothes on and drive to the office to put kit on truck to take to dr site. But as you know, this requires some forethought and planning. Its not really comparable to building windows on a pc at home is it?pxe booting from an imaging server for a linux install isnt really the same thing
Bullshit. You can change to ahci by changing the start value of the msahci key in the registry. No reinstall needed. About 30 seconds on google would have gotten your answer. You have to make sure the bios has ahci enabled after changing the key and rebooting (otherwise it wont boot)
one of my customers .....runs a little shop with a rented pos windows box. on the first visit about 8 months ago i was there, and i remarked on the fact it was running xp, IE6 and had avira free anti virus on it. user account was running as an admin.
told her to get hold of them and demand an upgrade.
she did so, and they replaced it with....another xp box (which i only found out about about 3 weeks ago - i dont see her very often). she told me that they had said that it was perfectly secure because it was "running through the windows 7 server" which it isnt, and even if it was its directly connected to her internet connection anyway. their staff browse on it for crying out loud. they just spun her a line of BS.
i sent her an email explaining why this was completely unacceptable, and suggested she forward it on to them. they are replacing the till tomorrow.
the old dear who runs the shop has no idea at all about computers, and can only trust what her POS supplier is telling her. they clearly dont give a monkeys about security. i wonder what the pci-dss guys would make of the fact that she is accepting cards on this kind of setup? im amazed they havent stepped in - i have to do compliance once a year for my card acceptance. maybe the POS guys do it for her, in which case, why havent they stepped in> the only answer is that the POS guys are lying to them. its pretty piss poor and im sure that this is not the only example of this kind of thing.
im glad to have introduced you to a new level or irritation.
you can usually change the function of these buttons. <do nothing> is the best setting IMO.
by the way, if you arent sinister, why do you drive it left handed? are you a masochist? in which case, there may be a setting you might like for those extra buttons....look for <random> ...happy masocating!
i don't know how they've managed, but most hp laptop keyboards these days have the caps lock key protruding into the rest of the keyboard, so if you are used to using a normal keyboard, you hit it by mistake alL tHE FucKING TiMe, its unbelievably irritating. why do people do this crap?
shift + f3 has never been so usefull.
chas...chas...calm down mate, no-ones going to take the shiny thing away from you. its fine, really. you can keep it. theres a reason that the command line still exists, and so do normal mice. they work. they are useful. they do their job, nothing more, nothing less, and enable you to do the things you want without doing the things you dont want.they have reached a pinnacle of "mousey-ness". i dont do graphic design or game, so i really, really dont need anything other than a mouse.
thats a mouse...yes ....over here please, with 2 buttons, hold the vibrator. i dont need a skinny frappuchino latte with menthol and a shot of caramel.
you can have one if you want - its OK!
just, in the name of everything, put 2 buttons on the mouse (hell, have 3 if you want). so that they have a differentiation between them. a physical line, thats all the i need, my fingers have inbuilt haptic feedback, so my fingers can feel what im pressing.
i know which one ive pushed. because i pushed it!
but dont..
1) put stupid buttons on the side of the mouse that zoom in or out or click the back button on your browser because you will ONLY ever push this by mistake, or you will get a phone call and have to remote in to someones machine to fix their fucking mouse, THEIR MOUSE, to stop them from going insane
2) make no differentiation whatsoever about which bit youve clicked or touched or brushed up against or accidentally stroked
i once put the flywheel counter weight in 180 degrees out on my single cylinder honda 100 motorbike. i know all about haptic feedback. it was like trying to ride a horny rhinoceros on speed during an earthquake.
why the fuck would you want this in a mouse?
youve just clicked this, BBBZZZZT
i know ive just clicked it! i fucking clicked it and it did something.
BBBZZZZZZTTT...you know you know youve just clicked the thing you just clicked.
i know i fucking know it! aarrghh! kill! kill!
bot masters
ahh, always make me giggle.
"hi, my names brian, im the chief bot master round here...."
"oh, and sergey, hes the goto man for *fanny packs...just tap him up if you need one"
*for our yank friends, fanny means c*nt over here. fanny pack....fnnnarr yurk yurk gibber gibber
**oh, and bot could mean bottom. or arse. or ass, if you are a septic
hi , itunes here, youve either rebuilt your pc or are using a new one..
wait. oh my god. its not the same pc the shiny thing was synced with before.
whats that? youve copied all your data from the old install to the new one? except for a few things that you put directly on the shiny? that you cant get access to?
well, just for me, id really like to just erase everything on the ithing and start again. is that ok?
sorry, whats that? no...no you cant do that. why would you want to get stuff off the ithing before i wipe it? no, i think, err, yes, drm maybe? yes, thats the reason. wait ...no ...dont cancel. your going to do what? use 3rd party software to actually get access to the shiny? no...surely thats not allowed..no wait...WAIT...WAAAAAIiiittt.
fucking itunes / apple bullshit. just let me get my (customers) stuff please?
so the problem is this:
you dont know what the environment is that the actual sound stage is installed in. it could be a cinema, it could be a tiny front room. most of the people who buy this kit are going to have something smaller than a cinema, with maybe max 5 people sat next to each other. i grant you it will be different for a cinema, but hey, if i was worried about cinema sound i would actually go there. i dont want to go to a cinema for avariety of reasons, mainly to do with other people, overpriced food and for crying out loud, i bought a sound system at home for this very reason.
for reproduction of the sound in any given environment, its going to depend on a few things.
1) the original intended levels of left right, front back etc. none of which can be messed about with once its encoded.
2) more importantly, the sonic environment in which the speakers sit.
so why, why, doesnt the surround sound system have a mic or a number of mics (cheap ones) that can be put where you actually sit. then you can have the surround sound system play a known set of sounds through the speakers of the sound system as it is set up up in the target environment. it could then figure out automatically what the best balance is for your sonic environment where you actually sit with your actual kit. it would only have to do this when you originally set it up, or when you change your setup.
im not pretending to have the skills to code this, but surely it would make for a better experience? why would you need active speakers or any of that nonsense? your kit does what it does. your walls and ceiling do what they do. you sit where you sit. by playing the known tones or sounds or whatever as a "sonic test card" it could figure it out and adjust to the best configuration.
just a thought.
@phil
fair comment - i did mean cloud in general though - wheres all the autofailover stuff? why doesnt it work? multiple data centres, clusters, failover etc etc...this has been in development for years and years hasnt it? or does it just not work? ive been in small business IT for 10 years now so i am well out of the big toys stuff, but we were doing this at neverfail nearly 20 years ago.
as for truecrypt, well, sure maybe the version later than 7.1a are suspect, but to who? even if 7.1a can be cracked, who by? anyone that interested in my stuff can just break into my office or my online backup, crack my wifi pass and jump on the network, tunnell in from next door.....the nsa could do it at will probably, so could gchq? big deal - i dont care. they arent interested in me, if they are, they arent going to find anything worth having.
i use 7.1a anyway. then i back that encrypted container up to carbonite. i have the last 5 versions stored on carbonite. i also have a local windows image backup with versioning. its not expensive, and i know where my stuff is. if the shit really hit the fan in the office, ive got instant access to my cloud backup. if something happened to that at the same time, then i guess ive got (and all of humanity) more to worry about than some passwords, like running for cover from the tsunami/nuclear winter/metoer strike...hence the icon
had a customer call about this this very morning. no ebay.co.uk
hes on virgin. im on virgin. same problem for me. however, i dont use virgins dns, i use open dns, and it still doesnt work.
curiously, if i vpn using private tunnel to the USA, ebay.co.uk works fine.
reports from downdetector give multiple issues across multiple UK ISP's. somethings fucked somewhere....(great conclusion i know)!
