LIFE, JIM? Comet probot lander found 'ORGANICS' on far-off iceball

Re: They may be rocket scientists...

they obviously took lessons from my missus. she uonce put together a wardrobe using a hammer to bang the screws into it.

i called it "the great leaning wardrobe of woodstock"

how the fuck it stayed (vaguely) vertical is probably proof of the existence of god. which god though, is in question. im thinking norse - IKEA

psychonaut

both could be / probably are true

panspermia doesnt rule out the possibility that life evolved here anyway without help from panspermia - and vice-versa - life could have been seeded here by panspermia but that doesnt rule out the possibility that life can evolve elsewhere without it.

theres also an intersection of the two, where life wouldnt have evolved somewhere unless helped by panspermia, and the flip side of that too, where the panspemia additions wouldnt have made any difference without the local planets attributes.

they arent mutually exclusive and dont need to be. in fact, they both lend support to each other.

also, life is only "as we know it" - there may be other forms of chemical structrures that can evolve to the level of self-questioning intelligence.

there could also be intelligences out there that were made by precursor intelligences too.

life may have happened once and spread.

life may have happened multiple times, and some of them spread.

life may have only happened once.

maybe theres another kind of life out there that wouldnt recognise us as "life" and believe that they are the only ones.

personally, given that we are not remarkable as a place in space time, and given the time and space available for it to happen, for me the the chances of us being the only ones are close to zero.

the problem with the religious argument is that its pointless. "god did it" is the bottom of the turtle pile for every single question you ever ask. that to me is completely pointless and unsatisfying. its a nice comfort blanket for a lot of people though, so that they dont have to think too hard about stuff.

Re: Terrorists!

well said.

if you want to proclaim that your god is a homophobic, xenophobic biggoted, capricious asshole, and you think that those kind of statement are going to convert people to your religion, we can simply say that , no thanks, we have already far exceeded the hideous and meager expectations (by some hundreds of years) that you hold your self too.

religion is a dying breed with the advent of knowledge, thank fsm.

psychonaut

"Those plagued by it need help thru love"

means:

yes we love everyone. unless you are gay of course and then we dont love you. our love is conditional. oh and we ignore the other stuff in leviticus because it doesnt suit us. but gays...oh gays are going to hell

what a bunch of assholes. at least iof you have thast opinion just come out and say "i think its disgusting". to which any right minded persons response is "well, its your right to be a homophobe, but that doesnt mean we have to respect it. now fuck off"

"God hates homsexuality. It's a sin. He loves you and wants you to repent of such evil."

ok, so what the fuck has it got to do with you then? surely that contract is between him and god (if you go for all that bullshit)

and lets not even get started on the muslim guy. there are no gay muslims. ok! i believe that as much as i believe all the other bullshit religious types come out with, i.e. not at all.

im happily hetero and fully atheist, but i hate this kind of hiding behind my religion bollox.

Hungary PM ditches internet tax plans after mass protests

just make the big companies (amazon, google, starbicks...etc etc) pay tax - get rid of this "licensing to our base in ireland" bullshit. just do it on gross turnover. if you have to pay a license fee and that license fee makes up x% (say, 40%) or more of your costs and is payed to a compnay that owns you then tough shit.

the reason people like them over tablets is that trying to read on a phone or tablet is very difficult - the sheer output of the white light from the tablet does your eyes in pretty quick in the dark, also the weight of the device will do your hand in after a short while if you actually hold the thing while you are reading.

i used to be a complete book fanatic, i wouldnt countenance the idea of an electronic device because i like the feel of books and the err, gui experience??? its so simple.....just like that ikea ad for their catalogue - sounds a bit weird but there you go -

but since the very first time i used a kindle i havent bought another paper book.

i had an original kindle - no touch, no keyboard for years. its light, so your hand doesnt get cramped and the reading experience is just like a book. last for months, i have 1000 or more books on it. now my suitcase isn't half full of books when i go away

unfortunately, it is somewhere in Germany now....no idea where.

so ive ordered the new kindle voyage. but its not waterproof which is a bummer (sandwich bags aside). however, the amazon ecosystem is going to prevent me from going elsewhere as there are just so many titles available.

i also dont like the crap attention to proof reading that seems to be endemic in the ebook community, but you can live with it.

BT's consumer mobe network suffers tech snags – but telco denies delay claims

psychonaut

Re: is this correct?

im pretty sure its on all the consumer ones too - i see a lot of home networks and theres always btfon and bt openzone (or similar, going from memory) on the same channel. a lot of these customers only get 2 or 3 megs, and i dont think thats the result of bandwidth throttling, its just that the line is shit

psychonaut

is this correct?

are they then intending to use the bandwidth all their broadband customers have to service this?

Re: 10 million iPhone 6s sold and counting...

look, screw apple - who cares? they will make a tonne of money regardless. theres loads of twats out there. at least bb are doing something interesting - i looked at the new square one and thought, well, thats stupid. but actually...im kind of intrigued. same way i was when the samsung note came out. what? its how big? well actually....that looks good....so i got one. ITS NOW my favourite phone ever (note 2) - i Havent had the opportunity to upgrade to the 3 but im due one now - and now the 4 is coming out...but, that swipeable keyboard, a return to actual buttons on a keyboard (i had the nokia n900 and thought that was genius...turned to shit as nokia dropped it soon after releasing it - that could have been a seriously good piece of kit...flip out keyboard, touch screen, really fast, but absolutely no support in the end).

ive never owned a bb, in fact i dont like them, never have, that one that had the screen that you could push as if it was a button (i mean for fucks sake!) pain in the arse to configure, doesnt work with hosted exchange until recently, still a pain in the arse with exchange, maybe thats changed, i dont know...if it hasnt, then im steering clear (exchange is it, i dont do anything else. it "just works" tm)
