Suunto settles scary scuba screwup for $50m: 'Faulty' dive computer hardware and software put explorers in peril

Slacker@work

IT's been an issue for a while....

I was diving with a buddy of mine a few years back and he was using an "air integrated" dive comp - the type that has a transponder that you fix to a spare port on the tank regulator - as we were exiting the water another pair were going in, one of whom had an identical model computer to my mate.

As we passed each other both computers beeped as the transponders switch between the divers... so the guy coming out suddenly thought he had a full tank, and the guy going in appeared to have not much above 50bar left (i.e emergency reserves). This was reported to Suunto and the reply back was its a 40000 to 1 chance so would do nothing about it.

It's a phone with a peel, but you'll have to wait a bit more for retro Nokia

I had the 8110 but traded in for a 7110 - the spring release made all the difference!

Cancelled in Crawley? At least your train has free Wi-Fi now, right?

Slacker@work

50MB?? Luxury!

This morning I had the dubious pleasures of the Arriva Trains Wales service between Manchester and Cardiff. The Allowance was 20MB and lasted a whole 5 minutes! After that the connection was so poor that I just gave up - so much for enabling a mobile workforce!

Re: If BT can lower their prices........

Yep, an acquaintance of mine moved on to a new build estate in May and still don't have a phone line and neither do any of the other homes on the site - lack of capacity in the local exchange is apparently the issue, with no plans to upgrade. Worrying as at least another 200+ new homes being built around here!

Ofcom must tackle 'monopolistic' provider BT, says shadow digital minister Chi Onwurah

Slacker@work

Re: Priorities

If the Openreach arm of the business was taken back into public ownership (i.e. a public service) then no, it won't have shareholders.

I don't mind a monopoly as long as it delivers what it promises - the problem is that they are stripping out profit to give to the shareholders; not ploughing monies back into the national infrastructure in a way we would all like.

It would also be ideal for growing an artificial reef on (cold water corals, like we get here in the UK), although I would stick it a bit deeper; 30m would be optimal.

generally its not a bad comparison between the two, albeit the upcoming EU Data Protection Directive could shake stuff up a bit - if anything more teeth are given. I particularly like the fine structure for global enterprises - €100 000 000 or 5% of global turnover (that's turnover, not profits).
