You think that hasn't happened yet?

What the Linux desktop really needs to challenge Windows

skalamanga

Literally the only limiting factor for me is a small group of 3rd party software. Solidworks, Autodesk, Ableton, NativeInstruments.

If Valve's gaming efforts can also handle these, I have zero use for windows at all.

Clippy rises from the dead in major update to Copilot and its voice interface

Sorry, but when you click on mico, what actually happens is clippy lifts the mask. It's been clippy all along. Always has been.

Framework flame war erupts over support of politically polarizing Linux projects

I honestly thought better of Register readers. This is not just about someone's views, the people in question were actively involved in cases of cyber bullying within the developer community.

Everyone has different views, but toxic and bigoted behaviour should not be tolerated or rewarded.

Google goes cold on Europe: Stops making smart thermostats for continental conditions

Re: "Heating systems in Europe are unique"

Just to clarify, the USA aren't even in the top 10 on the world freedom index. Yes, it's a thing

skalamanga

Re: Honeywell

I've had an opentherm compatible boiler in the UK for nearly 2 decades.

skalamanga

The software implementation supplied with any hardware should be considered a default implementation, and not the only a available one.

OEMs need to stop insisting that devices are locked down for security and to protect the warranty. They should be forced to provide or use freely available recovery tooling and complete BSP support so devices can be modified by the owner however they choose.

Workers: Yes, RTO makes sense. No, we’re not going to do it

skalamanga

No, workers absolutely do not think rto is a good idea.

The whole lockdown thing took so much pressure of physical infrastructure it could have saved trillions in maintenance costs and upgrades. This money could have been used to give digital infrastructure a massive boost, but now we're basically back to struggling in congestion for large parts of the day.

Same should be true for all mobile and computer manufacturers, tvs, printers, everything.

There should be a freely available support package containing all the sources for all the components in any device.

Mixing Rust and C in Linux likened to cancer by kernel maintainer

skalamanga

If you find Rust syntax hard to understand, that's a you problem. Calling it garbage because you have no idea how to read it just shows off your own limitations.

Re: This is stupid

They need to bad roadside advertising then.

skalamanga

Re: This is stupid

Firstly, because you arent supposed to be using your phone while driving. Secondly, I'm more confused why this is something new.

I've been doing this for several years when I'm driving home to turn on my espresso machine so it's warm when I get there.

What I'd like it to do is use my location and traffic data to do this without me asking.

Things are going Z-shaped at Huawei: Chinese giant preps three-screen folding smartphone

skalamanga

Been waiting at least 2 years for this. A regular screen sized front display that's not wasted when unfolded into a wide-screen

Still bewildering that samsung didn't use 'V' fold, and save the 'Z' moniker for this.

Lenovo to offer Android PCs, starting with an all-in-one that can pack a Core i9

skalamanga

The latest ota on my lenovo p11 5g broke 5ghz tethering. Lenovo support tried to tell me it was Google's fault and they are not responsible for software issues at all.

Microsoft defends intrusive dialog in Visual Studio Code that asks if you really trust the code you've been working on

Microsoft also think its a good idea to open an intrusive dialog box asking if I'm sure I want to save the file I just clicked on, then open another intrusive dialog box asking if I really want to run the file I literally just downloaded!

Flash in the pan: Raspberry Pi OS is the latest platform to carve out vulnerable tech

Plenty of chrome extensions work just fine.

Same here. My advice to all the vendors out there is, I may buy you products and/or services. I will seek them out if I am interested in them. If I see ads from you however, this will guarantee that I will not.

EU wants one phone plug to rule them all. But we've got a better idea.

Screw plugs, I want magnetic contacts

Something like hdbaset or thunderbolt, but using pogo pins and a magnetic locator. Make it flat and round with 4 pairs of terminals so it can connect in four different axes and handshake each pair on connection. Put a hole in the centre so it can be permanently locked in plac with a screw.
