Windows Server 2012: Smarter, stronger, frustrating

Re: Unix vs Windows

At an educated guess you are running AV software which is the problem....It is near instant to do this on a standard system.

If these are archive files, thne that will add to the problem with some AV clients as they will want to unpack them....

Either exclude the file type from scannig or install a better AV product....

NT has never been a Monolithic type system. It has always been a hybrid micro kernel design. Only really old UNIX legacy based things like Linux are monolithic these days.

Re: Nokia need to put out Android phones

WP hasnt failed. It nearly tripled it's market share in the last year, and Nokia sold 7 million WP handsets so far. Thats good for a new and not yet mature platform.

WP8 with the same platform on tablets, desktops and mobiles is going to massively drive market share for it.

Better than HD actually.

Higher Pixel density than Apple Retina displays with brighter display, less motion blurring and more intelligent control of brightness, colour and contrast. For instance screen is visible in very bright sunlight....

Because WP8 is better than anything else currently on the market. Especially that MeGo and Symbian crap they had before.

Windows Phones are designed for the cloud - storing everything in Skydrive and for streaming music - from Nokia, Microsoft Zune, and several other choices. 32GB is more than enough to hold the music you really need for a plane flight, tube journey or anything else where data isnt available.

Microsoft's server market share is still growing though at the expense of UNIX:

"Microsoft Windows server demand was up 1.3% year over year in 1Q12 with quarterly server hardware revenue totaling $5.9 billion representing 50.2% of overall quarterly factory revenue, up 1.8 points over the prior year's quarter.

Unix servers experienced a revenue decline of 17.2% year over year to $2.2 billion representing 18.3% of quarterly server revenue for the quarter. IBM's Unix server revenue declined 3.7% year-over-year and gained 6.3 points of Unix server market share when compared with the first quarter of 2011. "

Re: Late

Linux is FAR more expensive than Windows Server. Have you looked at the licensing costs for Enteprrise Linux lately? Also it costs far more to support with a higher TCO.

Windows Server also has massive advantage over Linux distributions. Roughly a tenth of the security vulnerabilities for starters, and it also has many many enterprise features that Linux doesnt, for instance thin provisioning, deduplication and mutipath SMB.

RICHTO

Re: Late

Yes they have. Server 2012 went RTM on August the 1st and has been available to download from Microsoft Volume Licensing site since August 15th, and is Generally Available today.

I cant see why anyone buys Solaris anymore. Either Linux or Windows server will do the same and cost much less.

Not true at all. Microsoft do not and have never read your emails like Google. All that the new T&C does is allow them to share your already stored personal data across their cloud platforms (so for instance a Microsoft website could give you pop up alerts that you have a new email without you directly logging in to your email.)

Yes, a crippleware browser on your system.

To use the complete set of features available in Outlook Web App and the Exchange Control Panel, you can use the following browsers on a computer running Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista or Windows 7:

Internet Explorer 7 and later versions.

Firefox 3.0.1 and later versions.

Chrome 3.0.195.27 and later versions.

On a computer running Mac OS X 10.5 and later versions, you can use:

Safari 3.1 and later versions.

Firefox 3.0.1 and later versions.

On a computer running Linux, you can use:

Xbox is the leading current generation console, and PCs are also a leading gaming platform - both of which rely on Direct-X for 99% of games. There is no need for MS to support Open GL. they are already on top of the graphics market with Direct-X.

If those games makers want a share of the soon to be massive Windows Tablet market, then they will have to write for Direct-X - and this is regardless of how well Windows phone does.

Not true. Linux has a much higher TCO for everything except as a web server. The support licensing costs for Linux are also much higher than Windows Server. Linux distributions also have roughly ten times as many security vulnerabilities to evaluate compared to Windows server

For those sort of customers it wont matter - they will buy the cheapest one - with Windows RT - and pay the app store tax for everything that they need. Which is great for Microsoft....

And of course for applications companies - Microsoft have a far better record on security than Android / IOS, and this will mean that piracy will likely be much lower.....
