Angry Birds maker Rovio takes aim at staff, axes a third of them

djstardust

Greed to put it simply ....

The original Angry Birds for the ipod touch and iphone was superb. Cheap, simple to play, addictive, frequently updated and original.

They then got greedy with the mighty eagle and such then went down the freemium route for sequels which everyone hates except the game companies and the people getting a cut like Apple and Google.

Sadly most of these game companies are very much a one trick pony, it has happened time and time again where companies like Rovio come from nowhere, get heavily invested in, go to shit then go bust.

Nothing new.

Wileyfox smartphones: SD card, no bloatware, Cyanogen, big battery – yes to all!

djstardust

Nice one .....

So, while Samsung are looking for over £800 for their latest and greatest we have a device with great specs for £200. You have to ask if Samsung et al are losing it, or just plainly ripping us off.

I can't see any reason it can't be rooted as it already supports CM. It will be sold in the UK by Clove and such.

SD slot, 3gb RAM, HD screen .... The specs are impressive. Only thing is the 2500Mah battery which is not removable. What not to like......

Very soon, people will just stop paying £50 a month for a mobile, as the operators are now in on the act and seriously overcharging for the 24 month deals.

I have the Galaxy note 4 which is a great device, but is it really £369 better than this one?

Samsung emits Galaxy S6 Edge+ 'inboxing' video

djstardust
WTF?

Lost the plot ....

Samsung have clearly lost the plot lately. They are not Apple and need to realise this sooner rather than later.

Instead of all this marketing crap, the thing that will sell the phone is the price which currently is ridiculous.

Oh, and please put the SD slot and removable battery back. thanks!

Vaio returns from the dead wearing sharper suit, bolts in neck

djstardust

Sony screwed it all up .....

I had Vaio laptops for many years and they were all excellent. Top if the range kit, including the Vaio U70 which was the world's first tablet PC (Apple .... are you listening ......)

It all went pear shaped when they tried chasing the mid to bottom market and churned out a whole load of plastic crap. If they had stuck to the higher end of the market things would have been a whole lot different.

Sony are losing money on pretty much everything and only the PS is keeping it alive. A dinosaur of a company who constantly make poor business decisions and try their best to piss off the customer.

Parallels Desktop 11 brings Windows 10 and Cortana to Mac

Ransomware

Great product but the way the company sells it is abhorrent. Ransomware of the highest order and expensive too. No thanks!

MORE Windows 10 bugs! Too many Start menu apps BREAK it

djstardust

Ermmmmm

Another good idea is to defer upgrading to Windows 10 until this kind of annoyance is fixed. ®

No shit Sherlock.

I'm laughing at all the people posting on FB that they will be upgrading this morning. Good luck (and don't phone me when it all goes titsup!)

Microsoft suspends Windows 10 new-build downloads ahead of launch

djstardust

Microsoft?

Although I really love windows Microsoft are trying their best to kill it.

Why can't they just have a good, reliable, secure desktop OS for 99% of the users instead of all this touch and mobile crap?

Listening to theor customers is not their strong point and will ultimately end in the demise of the PC market for all but corporate. It's a shame.

Samsung caught disabling Windows Update to run its own bloatware

djstardust

Windows Update is a nightmare

First thing I do is disable windows Update when I get a new PC. It nags and nags you to install the updates and a couple of times it has shut down the machine when I've been in the middle of working on something.

Surely MS can find a better way of implementing updates silently .... and until they do it stays well and truly disabled.

Taylor Swift boycotts Apple Music over no-pay-for-plays shocker

Usual Apple greed

So they offer 3 months free to the consumer, and don't pass the royalties for that 3 months on to the artists. It's not the artists that are offering the 3 month trial, it's Apple so the artists should be paid.

Apple's profiteering and greed just amazes me!

HTC reflects on Champions League iPhone cock-up

djstardust

Still in business .....

How HTC are still in business is beyond me. Don't get me wrong there is a need for competition to keep Apple and Samsung from taking the world over but HTC just stumble from one crisis to another. The whole get a celebrity to endorse your product blew up in their face previously.

Their phones are expensive, average and behind others spec ways so it's only a matter of time before it's bye bye.

EE 'best' of the UK mobile network bunch, but how good is that?

djstardust

Investment

As long as the companies operating mobile services have shareholders that are more important than customers things will never get better.

Telefonica have sucked O2 revenue for years and put little back in.

I stay beside a very large industrial estate in the Oil Capital of Europe.... with O2 I get GPRS as standard and Edge if it's sunny and the wind is blowing in the right direction. Pathetic!

Samsung to boot out Shin after Galaxy S5 tanks – report

djstardust

Expensive and riddled with bloatware

Note 4. Seriously delayed and £575. Riddled with bloatware and Samsung services EXACTLY duplicating the Google ones already on there.

Just got the LG G3. Pretty much the same spec with very little bloat and nearly half the price. Superb handset.

Samsung have rested on their laurels without actually improving very much. Their phones are mid range with Apple prices. Apple phones aren't that much better but they seem to get away with high margins.

NOKIA - Not FINNished yet! BEHOLD the somewhat DULL MYSTERY DEVICE!

djstardust

Re: "Nokia said China would receive it first"

Receiving it?

Shipping internally from the local Foxconn outlet methinks!

LARGE, ROUND and FEELS SO GOOD in your hand: Yes! It's a Nexus 6

djstardust

Very meh ....

The vanilla Android experience is to be commended, however the Note 4 is a better device and will drop in price pretty quickly once it is freely available. Better replaceable battery and SD card slot seals the deal for me.

If you are willing to root and install a custom ROM then you will get a similar crapware free experience on the Note 4.

Simply put, too expensive for a Nexus.

The Great Smartphone Massacre: Android bloodbath gathers pace

djstardust

Profit margin

Apple make obscene amounts of profit on their handsets but people don't seem to mind as they "look the part"

Samsung are far too late to the table with the better looking Alpha and note 4 (and they're far too expensive in the UK), and Touchwiz with Knox just pisses people off. Sounds like Samsung are going down the Microsoft road of "we know best" but it will screw them in the end.

Apple Watch buyers will feel 'different' after being 'serviced' in spring 2015

djstardust

Oh yeah, my £700 first gen ipad got one software update and it pretty much rendered it useless. It is sluggish as hell despite numerous reformats and the keyboard is virtually unusable.

NEVER buy a 1st Gen Apple product unless you have a coffee table with a short leg.

djstardust

Agreed

I have the Yoga 2 pro i7 and it is really superb. The hinge works perfectly and the speakers are already good. Not sure if this new hinge is change for the sake of change. Note the price has also gone up £100 too....

Samsung abandons Chromebooks, laptops, PCs in Europe

djstardust

Where to buy?

I find this sort of ironic.

When I was looking for a new high end lappy last month there were some nice ones on the Samsung UK website ...... but when you went to buy one they were not available.

No-one seems to stock Samsung laptops so it's no surprise they ain't selling!

Lenovo posts an INCREASE in desktop PC and notebook sales

djstardust

Wow

I had been looking for a new laptop for a while. Found a Lenovo on their site, super spec and a good price. Also has a 3 year on site warranty for £46. Looking forward to getting it. Just a shame it can't be supplied with Win 7 though...

Apple winks at parents: C'mon, get your kid a tweaked Macbook Pro

djstardust

Still too expensive

50% off would have been nearer the mark. The fact they are now throwaway units and the fact they are all glued together does nothing for me.

I could get a similarly specced Win machine far cheaper that is both repairable and to a point upgradeable.

Nice try Apple but no cigar, maybe no coincidence but the Apple store in Aberdeen seems to have about 6 punters in it at any point (and they are just teenagers using the free internet .....)

Returning a laptop to PC World ruined this bloke's credit score. Today the Supreme Court ended his 15-year nightmare

djstardust

Not a great store to be honest

Around that time the staff in the Aberdeen store were particularly aggressive and would tell you anything to get a sale, not to mention the 1/2 hour lecture on the benefits of warranty cover.

I bought a £2500 Sony Vaio laptop from them on a similar credit agreement but thankfully I never had to return it .....

Candy Crush King plans IPO valuing it at $7.6 BEEELLION

djstardust

Oh dear ....

My wife has been playing Candy Crush for months and hasn't given them a penny or bugged the hell out of her FB friends.

She is determined to get as far as she can without paying, and if forced will ditch it.

All their games are just a variation on a theme. Remember Rovio who did exactly the same thing not long ago ..... and nobody talks about angry Birds any more!

Another dot com flash in the pan that will end in tears.

Does Apple's iOS 7 make you physically SICK? Try swallowing version 7.1

djstardust

The reason for this is that there is no way to delete all your emails en masse which in this day and age is ridiculous.

I'm also surprised it fixes an iOS crashing bug .... I've not had Android crash on me for god knows how long now, at least Galaxy S1 days!

Light, fast ... and pricey: Toshiba's Portégé Z30 – now THIS is an Ultrabook

djstardust

I have the Tosh Z830-10U ultrabook. It's pretty good in all ways apart from the screen. Probably the same 1366x768 unit and it's crap ..... really crap.

If Sony can put 1920x1080 in the Vaio Pro, what's Toshiba's excuse, especially at that price.

Master Beats: Why doesn't audio quality matter these days?

djstardust
Paris Hilton

Beats are trash ....

I gave my son my spare pair of Sennheiser HD25MkII when he was 5. He is now 10 and has great fun going round Currys plugging his device in to the Beats display and telling everyone how crap they sound. The Sennheisers were around £150 ten years ago but worth every penny.

Apple are partly to blame here ..... the iphone music quality is flat and dreadful. Add to that the really poor earbuds and kids don't actually know what good music sounds like any more.

Joined up government?

So two Quangos (or whatever they're called these days) have differing opinions.

Offcom have consistently proven they're on the side of business (even though they are supposed to protect the consumer) where the ASA are showing some teeth.

Just another example of the corporate mind these companies work under. Tell the customer what they'll get, tie them in to a 24 month contract then move the goalposts. Rip-off Britain at it's best.

O2 tries something completely new: Honesty

djstardust

Re: Still no good with custom firmware and locked bootloaders

Yeah, tried that but status says "NO" as O2 have deliberately locked it. After many calls to CS and no-one knowing what a bootloader was I just gave up!

djstardust
Mushroom

Still no good with custom firmware and locked bootloaders

My wife got an Xperia Arc on O2 about 2 years ago.

The Android 2.3 firmware ran out of app space due to all the O2 Bloatware. I rooted and removed it. O2 then updated the O2 FW to sort some bugs, but with all the bloat back and no root available for that version. No space again for apps.

Great, ICS must be out soon ...... then O2 decided to not go ahead and it was stuck on 2.3 with very little apps.

Ah, custom firmware ..... nope. Booloader has been locked by O2 as well.

Never again. If they didn't fuck with the firmware for "added value" crippling the handset then add insult to injury by stopping you updating the ROM then I would think about it.

Sim Free from now on!
