Re: Bloody well get it fixed

But this is not mechanically unsound.. using your analogy.

It more a matter of being made un-roadworthy because you have standard tires and not the steel belt radials that the cop thinks you should have on your car.

If the detected threat was one of spewing spam or other vulnerability, that impacted network performance or availability I could agree. But its not. The risk was exposure of credentials, or other information int he session.. and they didn't scan the router either.. they were looking on 443 for SSL hosts not scanning non-standard ports.

Educate folks, but dont do it with FUD.

One looks at the vulnerability and how it applies to ones environment, and makes a risk assessment.. In my case a risk, and scheduled for the next service.. The threat meant it got bought forward The cost.. TPG has lost a customer.. actually a number of them as their contracts expire, as they are now on the same class as DoDo for their service quality.

Re: Typical mindless action from TPG

John,

I don't disagree in being alerted by the ISP, its the threats of disconnection, that I take issue with.

And yes the average home user, would be totally confused and panicked by the disconnection threat.

My response to them after correcting what was at best an eavesdropping vulnerability was to point out either the threat was ill-conceived or lazy use of a existing template.

Bubba Von Braun

Typical mindless action from TPG

This is so typical of TPG, I am yet to get a response from them of what malicious traffic is being sent by my service with them, so I might avoid a unilateral disconnection.

I wont hold my breath, and seals my decision to move away from them..

Sadly iiNet customers can look forward to this sort of mindless responses, no wonder Michael Malone came out against the takeover.

Antares apocalypse: Orbital points finger at turbopump FAIL

Bubba Von Braun

Re: In this case, it's not the technology.

Everyone is missing the fact that the engines have been re-furbished by AeroJet. So the misconception that they came out of a 40 year old factory untouched isn't realistic.

Its a single shaft turbo pump so it drives fuel and oxidizer, the comentard that poked at my comment of an engine failure cant eat that as I called it as such.

The interesting thing is what are Orbital going to use for an replacement. They cant get engines from Energia as these are all contracted to RocketDyne/ULA. Maybe they can graft Cygnus to a 60 year old Soyuz :-)

Re: Engine Anomaly

Look at the ORB-2 flight liftoff footage, it also shows a movement to the left of frame on liftoff. The guidance system would compensate for asymmetric thrust by gimbaling the engine, to maintain the desired direction of flight. Will be interesting to see what actually occurred.

Bubba Von Braun

Re: just like the good old days.

Ah but these motors at 1960's vintage... ex-surplus from the N1-F they are an awesome motor, and something the US has not been able to replicate.

Most liquid motors are driven by a Turbo pump that itself uses some of the fuel/oxidizer. The exhaust is then dumped out the side as a vent near the main chamber. (see this footage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ejx3jTRD_ME for a clear picture of an open loop engine) these motors don't do they they put the exhaust stream into the combustion chamber increasing the efficiency. The Soviets overcame the metallurgy and other issues associated with doing this closed loop system. Result higher performance/weight and why Lockheed and AeroJet beat a path to their door. Atlas uses a different version but same concept a closed loop.

Bubba Von Braun

Re: Is it the video or is my connection?

** Update**

Just looked at the ORB-2 launch video and the venting occurs a couple of times on liftoff so nothing abnormal there then.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNrf70S_gvs

Bubba Von Braun

Re: Is it the video or is my connection?

Nope.. it doesn't stop at 3:00 if you watch the LOX vent it continues to move upwards, (the puff's coming off the side of the rocket)

Not sure though most rockets cease venting to pressurize the propellant/oxidizer.. don't have Antares details, maybe that's the beginning of the failure, and overpressure in the oxidizer system. Have to go find footage of the previous Antares launch

Bubba Von Braun

Russian conspiracy?

Looks like a classic engine failure on liftoff, looks like one failed and took out the other engine.

Curious note, these engines supplied by AeroJet are the same as the Russian NK-33, Seems these engines like to perform as they did on the N1.. or is Vladimir having some fun at Orbitals expense ;-)

Tell us about your first time ... on the internet

Bubba Von Braun

Re: Tell us about your first time ... on the internet

First connection was in 1987 and was dial up 300bps modem, via a Govt department that kindly allowed access. No web, only FTP, telnet and primitive by today's standard email. Gopher and other tools like Archie were fun and you could roam the world exploring, security was simple and in some cases simply avoided. Corporate connections to AARNet had to be justified as beneficial to the educational community prior to the early 90's that was a tough one.

1994 got a server placed in another Govt org, running 24x7 for 20c, allot cheaper than an ISDN line at the time, my own Class C and visions of my home devices all wired (seems like most visions it takes about 20 years :-).

2004 saw a shift to DSL and putting up with ISP call centers, and am weeks away from NBN FTP :-) Been on VoIP for 8 years, phone books and calls to my land-line are a long distant memory.

I wonder what the next 25 years will hold.. either a return to the more open networks of the past probably not, but I think more likely corporate control enforced by rights deals, and government by the people for the corporations.

Either way its been a fun ride so far, and the biggest plus is how the broader access to information has empowered folks, who have access.. After all that's what the whole point of the Internet was envisioned to do.

Turnbull waters down broadband black spot fix promise

Total Spin

Living less than 3km from the CBD of Melbourne, and currently trying to run a business on < 3Mb/s its akin to false advertising, paying $$ for a ADSL2 service and getting ADSL.

And why... oh its the copper network is so old in the inner burbs, and T$ wont touch it unless it gets below 256kb.

Fortunatly I will soon ~6 months I will get Labor's FTP, but the poor folks now destined for Malcoms Turnbulls Mess clearly shows who's pockets he lives in.

Oh and lets not forget about repair but you can lob thaty in with the construction item in the ledger.

Reality is yes we can send bot's/probes off to view, but at some point we must leave this place as the Earth moves out of the goldilocks zone or do you propose we try and sort this out all at the last minute like a b-grade scifi flick.

Kinda like greenies who want something done about carbon emmissions yet bag nuclear power.

Turnbull floats e-vote, compulsory ID

Bubba Von Braun

No Money

There is never any money for the AEC anyway. In an environment where they are slashing public service jobs, the millions required for eVoting won’t happen.

Having worked for the AEC for many decades, these fantasies claims come and go, I still enjoy those clever satirical notes or replacement of all the candidates with V8 super car drivers. Lightens what is a very long day for those involved.

As far as informal, any rise there is likely due to people don’t want to vote for any of the candidates. so they simply lodge a blank ballot. And its compulsory attendance, you don’t have to vote for anyone, just put the blank ballot in the box and you done. (actually if you want you simply walk out...

A final thought.. the REAL reason Malcolm wants your to be forced to lodge a valid vote is the first preference gets ~$3 per ballot.. so if all the informal votes were formal that’s nearly $2Mil!!

Microsoft gives TechNet a one-off reprieve

Bubba Von Braun
FAIL

Doesnt help

Nice but mine expires on 31/10/13 and they have reversed an order they accepted and provisioned it to my TechNet login (can you say breach of the Australian Consumer Law, breach of contract and unconscionable conduct comes to mind) 3 months after it was placed with them. Complaint already lodged with the ACCC.

So I have paid for a new subscription, more $$ (bait and switch tactic, added to the ACCC complaint). Let’s see if they reject that order as it was submited before the deadline.

A reasonable position would be to accept renewals to run up to the program end date. But then again reasonable conduct and Microsoft that’s an oxymoron.

Oh it also seem the Microsoft Subscription Centre (ANZ) must have already been closed as they havent responded to my query 1 buiness day (as promised in the auto-response) is now a week and nothing but crickets. not holding my breath.

Ignore the community at your peril

Seems Microsoft is back on the path of ignoring the community they need to court.

In my 35+ years of IT its never been more about hearts and mnds than ever. Remember Good beats Best when you bring in the very illogical emotion we all tend to have.

So lets see M$ (and for all the BS its always about the $$) have canned the Technet Subscription program cause as technical reccomenders we are all freetards. Now they can the high level certifications, hmm maybe one MCS are the only ones who can provide this high-level advice.. having done a few gig's with them, I have seen the over promise failures of projects... nah give me someone with real world experience please..

But the trajectory M$ is taking, well "Its time" time to move on from a platform that has provided a comfortable living. to a new one, back to more *nix in my future, and certainly more VMware.

I personaly will now no longer reccomend Microsoft products and will work hard to help those who want to migrate off them. Public Cloud, Private Cloud, client server its now a matter of "Anything But Microsoft"

Now are my MACRO-11 skills up to scratch.. hmm

Re: It is commercial if it has a camera

Tim, check CASR 101.F.1 specifically 101.270 requires a UAV operators license for any commercial use. It makes no mention that includiong a camera makes the activitity "commercial use"

101.235 is quite clear that if it is used for any purpose other than sport or recreation. (101.235 1(b)) then they must be licensed. Unless the operator keeps it in sight and its operated in a way to be compliant with CASR 101.G (Model Aircraft)

The stated intention ALA is not sport or recreation, but surveliance. Like allot of therse orgs, they love to flout the law, my money is on the farmer with the shotgun shooting crows.

400ft above the ground level.

And yes AU have strict laws like the UK, but Farmers are one of the few categories that can justify weapons, do dispatch rabbits and other vermin like drones.

Bubba Von Braun
WTF?

Re: This Drone

UAV's are governed by some strict rules, CASR 101.F.1 applies as this is not a sporting use of a UAV.

They are likely to breach CASR 101.250 if they fly it above 400ft AGL, and CASR 101.245 if they close to within 30 meters of a person not directly involved in the operation of the UAV. If the Fyling Inspector deems the conduct to be hazardous under CASR 101.055 then they can kiss good bye to twice the cost of their UAV at least. Also possibly run agains 101.280 all of which strict liability applies to the offender.

The UAV in question would be defined as a Small UAV for the purposes of the regulations.

Well if I was a farmer, shooting crows would be a new occupation, pity if the UAV got hit along the way.

Re: Shuttles

"An explosion is a rapid increase in volume and release of energy in an extreme manner, usually with the generation of high temperatures and the release of gases. Subsonic explosions are created by low explosives through a slower burning process known as deflagration."

Challengers external tank did not detonate. But it did explode when the aft bulkhead collapsed causing the LH2 to be propelled into the LOX tank destroying the intertank structure at the same time the right hand SRB impacting the top of the ET, the resulting burn of the LH2/LOX was uncontained and extrene. With the spine of the assembly destroyed the Orbiter veered off and and was subject to loads in excess for 20g's way beyond the 5g's the Shuttle was designed for.

Interestingly the Shuttle never exploded and given the presence of "Devils Venom" propellants in the OMS pod and the RCS system in the nose quite surprising.

Re: No mention of SpaceShipOne?

Spaceship One used a Nitrous Oxide Hybrid. NOX is the oxidizer with rubber used as the fuel. Hybrids have been around since the 60's but companies like Environmental Aeroscience Corporation (EaC) has done allot to promote this form of propulsion system. EaC was one of the contractors for the SpaceShip One program.

Re: Why no mention of Sergei Korolev?

And did just as the US did got his own set of "Germans" then proceeded to build the R1 using Glushko's copy of the V2 engine. All thanks to Helmut Grottrup for providing re-worked blueprints from the parts left at Nordhausen and from personal memory.

Korolev's brilliance did show through, using the R2 with a detachable warhead increased the range.

Glushko was a huge fan of the "Devils Venom" designing the engines for Mikhail Yangel's R12 as by this point the relationship between Korolev and Glushko was as toxic as the Devil's venom.

Re: Good summary

Woomera is good for polar orbits, everyone gets so focused on Geostationery orbits and the added advantage of lauching near the equator. If you look at the basket case SeaLaunch has become launching from the equator itself really didnt have folks beating a path to their door.

BTW: Woomera is closer to the equator than Baikonur and is booked solid into 2020.

And Bomber Harris burned Dresden to the ground though the war was effectively over. Even Churchill was embarassed and distanced himself from it and cease further attacks. The US fried Hiroshima and Nagasaki, even though Gen Curtis LeMay had reported that his area incediary bombing had resulted in the problem he was running out of targets.

Von Braun himself was locked up by the very perpetrators, and he escaped from the SS before they themselves could be muirdered at the end of the war. If you going to after a German then you need to do so for the entire generation that allowed the regime to come to power.

Dont use more than one in a system

High Price, and appalling support, bad quality (heat sinks falling off them!). Tried to use two in a system and was abruptly told to go buy their enterprise drives at $5k each if I wanted to do a software raid with them.

Have earlier Revo Products and they work fine in this configuration. But it seems OCZ will do anything to drive folks to the enterprise market including alienating them.

All I can say is HELLLOOO FusionIO!!

LOHAN starts to feel the barometric pressure

Bubba Von Braun
Go

RDAS and Altitude

No commercial Barometric sensor will give you an accurate reading. You will need to to use GPS. RDAS has a uBlock based GPS that should work fine, although last time I checked it wasnt integrated in the firing chain, thats a Baro/Accelerometer based event on the RDAS.

Oh and thoughts on waiting until it bursts maybe unwise, you will need a few seconds before the motor comes up to pressure so I would think you would want a stable platform for release.

Your other option is to link it to a mobile phone.. cellphone coverage would be awesome at those altitudes. ;-)

Bubba Von Braun
Thumb Up

Low pressure ignition

As someone with experience in non-professional rocketry, I can tell you that at the sort of release altitudes you are planning ignition will be a small problem.

The low pressure will be your biggest factor you will need to keep the igniter in the motor until you get sufficient heat to ignite the propellant (550 degrees F is required). You must achieve this without blocking the nozzle as once ignited the pressure will continue to build.

A note of caution APCP (that’s the propellant in use in your selected motor) and from memory the Aerotech propellant formula is their Black Jack variety, a Smokey propellant :-) will continue to increase the pressure until Lohan has a CATO so use caution in how strong you seal the chamber.

Once the propellant reaches 550f then the reaction will be self-sustaining as the APCP will provide the needed oxygen and heat to continue the process until burn-out of your main engine. However should your motor chamber be exposed to the near vacuum before the engine is up to full pressure it may chuff and not burn successfully.

Unfortunately due to the small motor selected my favourite igniter technology copper/magnesium-thermite is unavailable to you.

So the lesson will be, keep the igniter sealed in the motor but not so tightly that engine and Lohan are recovered in flaming pieces.

Onward and Upward, want more information visit http://www.tripoli.org (A Tripoli members recent project.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvDqoxMUroA and a little traffic Lohan needs to watchout for)
