Google pushing Jelly Bean updates to Android devices

Durdy
Meh

Seeing as there is a lot less work to do from 4.0 > 4.1 compared with 2.3 > 4.0, it's pretty lazy if they don't release 4.1. It'd be nice if manufacturers were more frank about it though. At least with Nexus devices you know you're likely to get the update, or a community based release.

Re: Disappointing, but maybe that's good?

You do realise the screen res is more or less the same DPI as the new "retina" (eugh) macbook? And that graphics wise, you can't do much better than tegra 3 for ARM?

This will be great with the inbuilt GPS and offline maps, could make a very handy satnav as well as all the other tablet functions.

Apple quietly reveals iOS security innards

Re: @Durdy:

"The document makes absolutely no mention whatsoever of Android."

“solid protection against viruses, malware, and other exploits that compromise the security of other platforms.”

OK, no mention of Android, but I'm pretty sure they weren't talking about Symbian..

Android doesn't need antivirus. It's just shit being peddled by the AV companies and Apple as they've seen a new sector they can exploit. I've owned 2 Android devices for a couple years and SHOCK HORROR! Neither have had any problems with malware or any other nasties.

This looks like Apple attempting to spread more FUD about Android. It's tried the whole "fragmentation" thing, that Apple insisted was a problem, but they were the only ones complaining about it, and now they're trying security. Although the only problems seem to be proof of concept or some dodgey "free" version of a game with 2 downloads.

Like a lot of things in life, your stupidity will determine your mileage. If you need someone to hold your hand (and money) Apple is there for you..

Re: Yup - £900 is too much

Not only that, but the Apple Laptops have better graphics and usually better resolutions...

Realistically, if you're getting a 1366x768 res screen and Intel graphics, you shouldn't be paying more than about £450 regardless of other specs.

Re: C'mon, c'mon....it's working!

I'm pretty sure it will work under newer OS's.

I absolutely loved this game back in the day, I seem to remember abyss being a particular PITA...

And I think there was a sequel, but it was only available on PS2. It was called racer revenge.

Re: Downgraded Desire S or upgraded Wildfire S ?

It's also more expensive than the Desire S, and for that you only get Sense 4.0... (yay!) The Desire S will only get Sense 3.6, because for some reason it doesn't have the juice for 4.0, despite having more RAM.

HTC is now becoming the nVidia of smartphones; re-releasing last years tech as a "new" product.

Unhappy

But why..

Have they still not released the original Fire in the UK, and when is the Amazon app store (with a daily free Android app) coming to the UK?

Yeap, this is the same as the slurry of "ultrabooks" that have been featured on the reg recently, just got a different badge on the back.

LG: We're not walking away from Windows Phone

I'm not surprised manufacturers may be losing interest (although they'd never admit it)

What can they do until MS adjust the allowed hardware set/ release OS upgrades? They could re-release and re-brand an old phone every 6 or so months, but apart from that theres not much option.

It's obvious MS have jumped into bed with Nokia, and other OEMs will now be playing second fiddle.

Is this why you guys are looking to off load 8 of them?

HTC have always had poor quality control, I'm currently using a Desire S that has a gap just above the screen that shouldn't be there and just gets dirty. It's my first and last HTC device..

Re: real impact?

Yea, seems like they're more interested in playing a game of whack-a-mole than actually tackling the causes of the problem.

Re: How much?

"Yes, its bigger, fatter, heavier, slower disk, but I SAVED £450 quid! You can get an o.k. holiday for that, or nearly an Ipad."

Or an SSD, and then that Laptop would fly.

Ultrabooks

All these ultrabooks suffer from the 2 same problems:

1) The integrated Intel graphics can't take advantage of the processing power, and they're pants at anything 3D

2) They all have the same 1366x768 "HD" res. This resolution is fine on a 12" screen, but it should really be at least 1440x900 on a 13.3"
