X-IO fights global hybrid warming, keeps ISE age going

Gavin Mc

Re: Interesting canned quote

That would have been a reasonable attempt at a blatant thread hijack if you hadn't have typed IPOs instead of IOPs !

Many X--IO customers run to 95% plus capacity, especially service providers where the lost capacity is lost margin. O

All-flash storage or will you settle for hybrid? How to decide

Gavin Mc

There's an assumption here

You've assumed that all hybrid arrays use flash as a cache?

X-IO's Hybrid ISE constantly analyses the workload and uptiers to flash if there's a potential return on investment, not just because the data is accessed. The means that the performance of all-flash can be delivered at a much lower price point and also last longer, hence the inclusive 5 year warranty.

(Disclaimer: I work for X-IO but want to set the record straight).

Tax on storage buying

Good article and something that still goes on way too much in the industry.

If a vendor has a "best practice" of not filling an array over say 70% due to their architecture then you're right, either the pricing should reflect this or at least it should be made more open in the "usable" numbers. It's a bit like a tax on every purchase made that for some reasons seems to have become accepted, even though it doesn't have to be that way as there ARE storage vendors that don't slow down at high utilisation levels.

There's still way too much marketing hype in the industry and the sooner this stuff comes more discussed and out in the open, the better.

Thumb Up

Nail hit firmly on head

Well said that man - spot on !

Flash is a tool, not a solution.

Re: Oh my word

In all likelyhood, yes

The majority of full provisioned VDI deployments don't need crazy IOP numbers 100% of the time, they're extremely "bursty". Hybrid storage is all about smoothing out the bumps and delivering performance where its needed at sensible cost points.

Re: Would the real performance metrics please stand up?

Ken - I think you're confusing the performance (15GBs) with the amount of kit (200 drives).

Some of our competitors are achieving 10GBs but by using many more disks

So to answer your quesiton - both ;-)

Re: 10 hours to 10 minutes?

Nate. With regards to port density, I fear you may be looking at older models.

The current ISE boxes, in fact the ones used by Microsoft, have 8 x 8Gb FC ports rather than just 2. X-IO currently use FC rather than iSCSI due to the predictable performance provided by FC (I'm guessing this is why you like it more). Obviously as Ethernet based technologies mature then the modular architecture of ISE lends itself to any appropriate additions to connectivity.

You're correct that X-Volume does indeed only support Windows. This is becuase it's designed to be complimentary to Windows but fill some gaps in the current Windows LVM line-up. Again, as things change this can be reviewed, especially after Windows Server 8 comes to market. May other OS's and Hypervisors are supported but don't need this additional layer in order to take advantage of the modular growth of ISE units.

Glad you feel the Microsoft numbers are impressive, there's definitely more to come, thanks for responding.
