Capsule stability

Seems like they need to take another stab at the aerodynamic stability of the capsule, that sort of swing is just too wild. I wouldn't want that to happen during the decent in a normal launch either, but the capsule seems less than stable in any orientation. (Check out the SpaceX Dragon V2 pad abort test footage for comparison, that thing is stable as a rock once it flips)

imanidiot Silver badge

Re: Retros?

From the article: "Once the capsule's three parachutes had deployed, the hardware slowed to just 16mph. The capsule is equipped with retro rockets that slow the rate of fall to just a few miles per hour – but they failed to fire"

(You probably missed that last bit of the sentence.;)

I can't stand voice command. It never works when you want it to (they all seem to have a problem with a dutch accent), and if it does it is never as fast and easy as claimed by the manufacturer. Better to just push a few buttons.

Re: Being able to unlock your house from outside... already done

This, right here, is why my home will never be secured by electronic means. I'll use a mechanically operated system of pins inside a cilinder, actuated by a precisely sized piece of metal I can conveniently carry in my pocket (ie, a key). Yes, you can pick any lock given sufficient time. My current door locks take a skilled picker about 15 to 20 minutes. In a month I'll have locks that have so far not been picked by the lockpicking community. And there is no "try a bit, go home and start off where you left at the next attempt". You do it ALL in one go, or you are not getting in.

Call me old fashioned, but I trust the trusty old cilinder lock a lot more to secure my property and privacy.

Partnership on AI to Benefit People and Society... Doesn't sound sinister at all

imanidiot Silver badge

Re: Yeah right

@yesyouare, I am not being ironic in this case. I side with Steven Roper here. I realise AI might be of great benefit to a lot of people out there, but this "Partnership" is definitely NOT about creating that benefit for those people. It's not about improving lives. It's about improving profit margins and building new products to make more money. I am well aware those things might benefit people in the long run. But especially "real" AI could very well be a danger to human kind as a whole. I'm not so sure we should be rushing into it without giving some serious thought to what the consequences could be.

It reminds me of the Sci-Fi story "Manna" by Marshall Brain. (http://marshallbrain.com/manna1.htm). This "Partnership" is about building Manna, not about building "the Australia project". (There are plenty of problems with the story and the societies it depicts, but the main 2 themes are very applicable in this case)

Re: Certified for sale

Since this is enterprise level stuff HP is probably banking on the buyer wanting warranty and support for the thing. At that level it is safe to assume HP would have a clause in its support contract that it won't provide support for uncertified materials. That would shut the door for outsider materials suppliers pretty fast.

Re: I wonder how does electrocution through your ears feel like

Slight correction on my last post. -45V is ON hook ofcourse. Off hook (receiver picked up) would be "connected" and near 0V (Apart from the voice modulation ofcourse)

@AC: Jup, Phone lines pack a surprising wallop. I think its the slow and never ACTUALLY sinewave but blocky waveform. In the days of analog, the voltage wasn't even an attempt at sinewave, it was just a square wave, "on-off" modulation. Nice and spikey. Perfect for ringing a clapper on a bell. Also perfect for shocking the bejesus out of you.

Re: I wonder how does electrocution through your ears feel like

"a whopping 48 volts of direct current"

Up to 110 volts RMS 20Hz sinewave actually. -48 volts is the "off hook" voltage.

Re: Doubtful that someone running an old unsupported OS is keeping their browser up-to-date

I have a laptop that by now is over 10 years old running XP. I've tried Linux, Win 7 and Win 8 on it and none worked to my statisfaction for the purposes I needed. So it keeps running XP. I've patched it so far as I (as a semi-educated noob) can and it's running a recent version of firefox (not fully up to date as I haven't actually turned it on in 4 months now).

I just keep it away from the rest of my network and am careful about what sites I visit. It's main purpose now is for retrieving data from a somewhat ancient FAI certified flight logger for gliders using a similarly ancient USB to serial adapter using similarly ancient software that simply refuses to work on anything more modern than win XP. Theoretically I should just switch to using a FLARM with build in logger and ditch the laptop for something more modern but I can't be arsed and I'm a cheapskate. (Plus the Flarm is about 3 times the price of a high end laptop)

I doubt a clear bimodal peak would be seen even if there IS such a phenomenon. Since there are those students who have a hard time but manage to put their nose to the grindstone and learn anyway and there are those that can do it with 2 fingers up their nose but don't put in even a modicum of effort and fail anyway. I think this would smear the results enough to make any bimodal effect all but invisible.

Re: It is all in a name...

As automating tasks go, landing a plane is pretty straightforward. Plane autopilots really are as intelligent as a pile of bricks. Yes they can fly the plane, but that's the easy bit of piloting. Any yahoo can learn to control a fixed wing. Doing so safely in busy airspace while maintaining positional awareness relative to other traffic is a whole different ballgame. And we are a long way from automating that aspect. We just work around it with minimum separation rules and constant ATC attention and guidance.

Because the way the EU is now trying to steal the pensions funds (BTW, until the UK is out the UKs and the Netherlands pension funds, which form the vast majority of pension savings funds within the EU, are still at risk. Nope, just "blimmin forinrs"...

Maybe you should step out of your little bubble and meet some people from other walks of life. You seem to have been infected with EU propaganda. And if you really think all those who voted leave are ignorant racists it bloody well falls on the Remain campaign for failing to actually, you know, campaign and explain people PROPERLY why remain is the better option. Re: Just move your business before actual Brexit

@Len, BTW, don't get me wrong, you are very welcome in our little country. We could do with the added work/economy/tax given how many companies have left or fallen over. I'm just a little puzzled why anybody would choose the Netherlands out of all the EU countries on offer given our current goverments hostility towards any bussiness smaller than a few million euros turnover (Current attitudes seem to be: "If you don't make enough to make a special deal with the Tax services, bend over and take it!"). I certainly wouldn't consider starting a company in the Netherlands. And I live here!

imanidiot Silver badge

Re: Just move your business before actual Brexit

@Len,

I think your research is a bit flawed to be honest. There are more parties and politicians that have voiced doubt about the current direction/organisation/politics of the EU.

On top of that you seem to highly overestimate the intelligence of the average politician in the Netherlands. If they think they can get votes by being EU skeptic they will be EU skeptic. On top of that the current governing parties (PvdA and VVD) are polling at an all time low and total decimation at the next elections (next year). PVV is still polling at a major win. Whatever happens in the meantime, political upheaval and uncertainty is no doubt coming to the Netherlands come the elections next year. I doubt it's going to stay business as usual over here.

I'll agree Geert Wilders is a bit of a loony and his "election 'manifesto'" is somewhat laughable, but we'll have to see if possibly VNL might be able to jump into the gap by being right wing but not batshit insane.

In any case, there is a massive undercurrent of dissatisfaction with the current government and current EU and Netherlands policies. Who knows how that will eventually work out. I wouldn't exclude a Nexit. (Like I said, my thinking is this will only happen if the EU as a whole falls apart)

imanidiot Silver badge

Re: Just move your business before actual Brexit

moving ... to Amsterdam.

By moving to a country that will stay in the EU

Given current unhappyness about government policy and the rise of EU skeptic political parties in the Netherlands, I have my doubts you should be so certain about that. I do believe however if it comes to the Netherlands leaving the EU it will be because the project has finally just failed so miserably it just falls apart. Doing so at the moment imho would probably have a massive negative impact on our economy (even if it IS the smart/right thing to do).

not every single tomtom has a 3g modem inside. Only the models featuring HD-live or HD-traffic have such a modem. And you paid for the data connection when you bought the thing. The rest of the upkeep is paid for by TomTom (since it's 2 way traffic and TomTom benefits from it I don't see why they shouldn't. Its only limited amounts of data so i'd be surprised if most Nav units featuring this send more than maybe a few hundred MB in their lifetime). I believe some of the units featuring live traffic updates also required quite a hefty monthly extortion payment membership fee to use it.
