I do use webmail to access my email accounts and no, I don't self-host email, but you make an excellent point about having a local copy off-line and available. And as you have already mentioned Thunderbird is more than just an email client.

Thunderbird is go: 139 follows closely on Firefox's heels
Firefox 139 arrives for non-Chromium browser fans
@Liam:
"We'd almost suggest that Mozilla bought Zen and placed its designers in charge of Firefox ... but judging by recent trends, the organization would probably only end up shutting the project down after a few years. ®"

Ninite to win it: How to rebuild Windows without losing your mind
@ Liam:
This article and your earlier one on the Windows LTSC option has been a fabulous "how-to-deal" with the forthcoming Windows10-pocalypse so kudos for this and really all your articles. A pleasure to read your stuff on El Reg. Personally I've been using Linux since the mid-90s (I think starting with Slackware) and I've gone through all the Windows OSes throughout the years and also some neat OSes like BeOS and OS/2. Like you, I'm using macOS (and installing Asahi Linux where I can) and Linux. I'm tired of how Windows has devolved over the years, but appreciate your work in helping people carry on if they want to continue using Windows. Cheers.
How to stay on Windows 10 instead of installing Linux
Introducing Windows on arm. And by arm, we mean wrist
First read about this in the Android Authority article: https://www.androidauthority.com/pixel-watch-windows-3540368/
While technically interesting (as is the prior Windows-for-ARM work), I was more interested in whether AsteroidOS could be ported to the Pixel Watch 3 and asked if this could be ported in the AsteroidOS Matrix channel (as I have two smartwatches running it). Response was porting to the Pixel Watch 3 was subject to time and priority considerations with the Developers which is a fair point. My hope is to see AsteroidOS on a current Pixel Watch and this work for Windows-for-Arm seemed like a good launching point so we'll see.

FuriPhone FLX1: A Debian-powered brick that puts GNOME in your back pocket
Interesting write-up Liam. I've dabbled with postmarketOS, UBPorts and unofficial SailfishOS (I'm in Canada and apparently Jolla will not sell the Sailfish license here). Was debating getting a Pinephone/Pro at some point as well. Getting the phone you tested, or even a Fairphone 4/5 is a bit more expensive here since they're not sold locally, so after foreign exchange and GST/import duties it becomes a little costly to get these phones vs. buying something locally that I can flash say LineageOS.
Debian 12.9 arrives, quickly followed by MX Linux 23.5
HMD Skyline: The repairable Android that lets you go dumb in a smart way
Re: 3 years of updates ?
Three years of updates is typical for phone manufactures, you do get exceptions like the latest Pixels (7 years) and iPhones typically get more than three years software-wise. Given all this, I'd rather get a Fairphone instead - more easily repairable and in addition to Fairphone's official Android OS build you can always install LineageOS or DivestOS to extend the life of the phone. Pity I can't get them easily here in Canada though.

Compared to other distros, Vanilla OS 2 'Orchid' is rewriting how Linux works
Read about Vanilla OS 2 as well here:

Very keen to install/try it. Already cut a USB stick, now looking for some decent hardware to install it on.
P.S. The comments in the above weblink are interesting to read regarding problems/difficulties with the installation and afterwards. Perhaps giving your reply there as you did in El Reg would be useful for additional perspective.
Smartphone is already many folks' only computer – say hi to optional desktop mode in Android 15 beta

Always been interested in a full-on Desktop Environment on Mobile. I've used DeX with Samsung devices, installed MaruOS back in the day on my Nexus 5 to check that out. Heard that the Fairphone 5 has a Desktop Environment capability with Stock Android.
I mainly use GrapheneOS on my current Pixels (8 Pro, 7 and 7a) and would like to see Desktops come there as well (I suppose I could do this with a Pixel Fold/Tablet with GrapheneOS).

Sony Vaio P VGN-P11Z
Thumbs up for Liam using this machine. I too have one but am currently running MX Linux XFCE 32-bit on it. Love it to bits, wish there was an ARM version of this machine form-factor.
As to Alpine Linux with this particular version, will consider it if I come across a another machine like the Vaio P.
Cheers Liam.

Quick Ubuntu 23.04 Daily Build Test
Liam:
Anyway to do quick down-and-dirty test with say Ubuntu 23.04 Daily Build for ARM and a 6.3.x-RC kernel build? Canonical is working on support for this Thinkpad and Ubuntu 23.04 is supposed to be released on April 20th, but in the meantime......
Great review. Really looking forward to you testing Linux on this.
Sony Xperia Z2: What we REALLY thought of this Android fondleslab
The 4G version in particular
The Wifi version of the Z2 Tablet is easily available here in Toronto, however I'm much more interested in the cellular-enabled version which has pentaband GSM and LTE and apparently you can use the Z2 tablet as a big phone as it supports making phone call natively (not using VoIP) with a phone voice/data SIM card.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra: The quad-core 2.2GHz MEGA SCREEN PHONDLESLAB
Nice review on the Z Ultra. This is actually coming to Canada on Bell around October 15th along with the Z1. $799 and $699 CDN for the Z Ultra and Z1 respectively I believe. Talked to a Sony sales person at the Eaton Centre Sony Store in Toronto and he tells me Sony Canada will have the unlocked Z Ultra @ $750 thereabouts. We'll see.
For the next review might I suggest the Nexus 7 2013 LTE. No true "telephony" per se but with VoIP does it really matter? Will fail the lager test for sure though.
