I wonder if anyone has told them (law enforcement) if they hadn't overstepped the line so much then these companies (Apple, Google, etc) may not feel compelled to put this type of encryption into their devices?

Even that doesn't solve the issue depending on where you are. Try visiting parts of Asia (yes, I know, outside the scope of most El Reg readers) and they're injecting popup ads directly into my web browsing. I've taken to using OpenVPN on my own phone over a 3G connection whilst abroad, it's ridiculous.

My first laptop, a Sony Vaio Picturebook, suffered from the same problem within 12 months of purchase. That was just over 4 years ago now though, so it's entirely possible it's unrelated.
I'm a tad worried now though, my current lappy is an Inspiron 8600; wonder if the UWXGA screens are affected?
