this sums it up nicely for me...

That is utterly hideous. So nastily bling, it's untrue. The original Vertu handsets were admittedly quite simple and understated, even if they were pretty much bog-standard Nokia innards. Who the Hell designed this?! Ming the Merciless?
Mine's the mink fur one with the matching wide-rimmed hat, please...
...i say "baaaaah!"
there is no need for 'why'. 'because' is the answer.
leading on from Cosmin Roman's point, there are some serious goings on afoot in the mobile linux arena. Angstrom, for instance, is making serious progress and the number of supported handets is slowly increasing.
in the mobile market where we can't yet build our own handsets (like we do our PCs) device-specific ports are crucial. if the naysayers had any idea about linux development, they'd understand this.
personally, i quite like the iPhone handset but i find the GUI a little bit 'Fisher-Price'.
...comic duo Adam & Joe did joke alternative theme tunes for the film and the pedants reacted as though they were real attempts to replace the theme! The themes themselves are funny but the comments on (the admittedly idiot-full) youtube make them even funnier.

hey, you there! that's a lot of Power you're packing. one might say you were quite Powerful in your literary style. with Power.
did i manage to get the word Power (the pro-noun, of course!) in my comment as many times as you did? you do realise that when people (ie you and those like you) write these things slating one company and NOT giving more than one alternative, you just come across as a marketing bot?
do you like IBM by any chance? :-)
"Wow...I guess UltraSparc is now officially dead"
you stupid bloody clown. the massively successful T1 + 2 chips ARE UltraSPARC.
and, as the other AC puts it: "no system from any rival manufacturer has remained competitive for anything like such a long service life". too true.
on a serious point, though, i would have liked some reference points about who is using hadoop, successfully. i know Ted tells us that people who use it "don't write about it" but reference would give the article substance and move it further away from 'just an opinion'.
i like the swearing, though.
damn, Mike, you beat me to it! :-)
i actually have RPM to thank for helping me discover Slack. it was my inability to compile software from source (due to not being able to find the right bloody RPMs) on a Red Hat box without having to seriously re-adjust compile options (due to so many broken paths, etc) that led me to look for a new distro.
i actually find now that i compile a lot less due to finding linuxpackages.net and (more recently) slacky.eu.
@ A J Stiles: _IF_ make fails?? i think not, sir! surely you refer to some other distro! ;-)
"AMD can't build reliable chips they never have and they never will."
hmmm, i have a few of them. i've also built machines for people three or four years ago and they work just as well now as they did then. all on AMD. not that i'm fanboying AMD, though. just they were a cheaper alternative. i have a couple of old P4's that are still going from about the same period.
sorry, mate; all you got is an opinion. unless you have any references of studies to back that claim up?
"O2 couldn't manage to provide a decent basic telecomms service before they landed the iPhone deal, so why expect them to come up trumps now?"
oh, i don't know. if you live in Leeds, where they're based, it seems to work fine. i have been enjoying having a rolling 30 day contract with them for a good while now. that said, if you need to speak to the sales/support drones, you're fucked.
i heard something the other day on the radio with Noel saying something along the lines of:
"i don't know what's with all this killing people. when i was a kid you got a rep by trying to be somebody. when did this all come about?"
and i thought 'hmmm, nice sentiment but people have always been doing this, just more in countries like america than here. nonetheless, nice sentiment.' now, i'm just of the opinion that he's turned into some old giffer who's going to be down on anybody wearing a hooded sweatshirt next. dangerous idiot.
...that the site reads this text when you go to the main page:

i think what we need to bear in mind is the list of members the LiMo foundation has. check out the list here: http://www.limofoundation.org/current-members/index.php and tell me you don't see some promising involvement.
worth remembering that the mobile companies would love to be rid of those pesky license fees for the OS on their gear.
