Opera joins Google/Apple in-crowd with shift to WebKit and Chromium

W.O.Frobozz

Pfft. WebKit.

I knew it BEFORE it became popular, back when we called it KHTML. Yes I am the HIPSTER of web browsers. (Ask me about Project Mnemonic sometime).

And to think all those years ago people were blasting the KDE project for creating KHTML and making their file manager act as a web browser (KDE 1.1). KHTML...the little widget that could.

Review: Dell XPS 10 Windows RT tablet and dock

Battery usage

The way that the Dell Tablet + keyboard drains the tablet's battery first is not unique...the Asus Transformer Infinity does the exact same thing, which flies totally in the face of what the venerable old TF101 would do (which was to keep the tablet charged above all). The first time I used my TF700 I thought it was defective. It's stupid behaviour and I have to wonder why they changed it (and why Dell did the same thing).

"Promised to show up"

....right, just like RI-*cough*-Blackberry was in "negotiations with Netflix"....TWO WHOLE YEARS ago? And still no Netflix. And their Android layer is incapable of running Android's Netflix (along with a host of other useful Android apps).

They really haven't learned anything from Apple on how to do a launch properly. The first device is out in Canada next week but the US doesn't get it until...late March? And the Playbook doesn't get the update until...maybe late February at the earliest? Not an Apple fanboy by any measure but on launch day ALL of the above happens at the same time, across all their supported platforms.

Once again it sounds like they are seriously rushing to get something out to market.

Re: RIM now called Blackberry

So no matter how you slice it, Research in Motion is now truly history. It's basically acknowledgement that the name "RIM" had way too much baggage.

And a name AND stock ticker change...sounds like they're getting ready to put up a "For Sale" sign soon.

I love that prop.

I love the way the paint is so lovingly slopped on that TARDIS prop, messily half-painted over the St John's badge.

And I wouldn't have it any other way. I still laugh at the shot of the TARDIS in "The Seeds of Death" where it looks like it's ready to collapse, having been hastily assembled.

Always love seeing William Hartnell.

Star Trek saviour JJ Abrams joins the dark side: Star Wars VII

Re: Point of order:

And this is what the new script writers need to remember. Star Wars, like Doctor Who, is Science FANTASY.

The second Darth Lucas tried to put "science fiction" into Star Wars we were left with Obi Wan waving a tri-corder around to measure "midichlorian" counts.

W.O.Frobozz

Re: Ughhh

Ok all plot points taken but....

...JJ didn't write the script. He was the director. Put the blame on Orci & Co who actually wrote that crap. JJ has gone on record saying he isn't really a Trekkie...but do you have to be to be a director? So JJ is directing Star Wars...I still want to know who the hell is writing the script.

Microsoft blasts PC makers: It's YOUR fault Windows 8 crash landed

W.O.Frobozz

Seriously, STFU Baldy

Windows 8 is actually WORSE than Windows Vista. It is YOUR fault you wanted to shove a terrible tablet interface in everyone's faces.

And even without that Windows 8 would have STILL been lukewarm because Windows 7 finally got it right.

You expect people to upgrade to Windows 8 for "games?" What games? Microsoft stuck a dagger in the back of PC gaming when they invented the X-Box, causing games to either not be made for the PC or worse, end up with a crappy console port...wake up and smell the corpse, Ballmer. PC Gaming is dead and YOU were the one that killed it. The goldmine era of people frantically updating to the latest Windows to play the latest games is gone forever. Given what Valve is doing with Steam, they're going Linux.

And as for business users using Windows 8? Let me be the first to say HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Right. Because professionals really WANT that crappy, clunky tablet interface making their day's work more difficult and painful. I know MY business has no plans to foist this lemming on it's employees.

RIM adds 15,000 new BlackBerry 10 apps in one weekend

W.O.Frobozz

Playbook still of limited use

So we've had our PB sitting around collecting dust for ages...decided to pull it out to see what could be done with it after all this time. After an eternity of charging before the silly thing would allow itself to boot, and then another eternity waiting for the charge to be over 15% just to get the latest OS update (come ON RIM, is this even necessary? It's plugged in for god sake.), I finally got down to business. After being pestered every 10 seconds for the wife's BBID password, I finally get on to App World and crack a big yawn.

So I figure "hey maybe I can make this thing useful with some Android apps." Well..not so much. No Android apps actually work on it that I'd want. And key stuff like Netflix still can't be sideloaded and made to work. Yawn again. Didn't see Google Apps listed in any of the sideload lists out there either.

After being pestered another dozen times for a BBID login I just gave the heck up and remembered why the silly device has been a coaster for months. Wake me up when someone roots it and puts something useful like Android on the device (the hardware is nice, too bad about the software).

Re: Said it before and I'll say it again

Funny, i'd say it's more like people would like to try and play with a device before blowing $599 on it. If it were at best buy and I could walk up and play with one, I might be more interested in trying it.

If I wanted a tablet with a keyboard, I'd buy an Asus Transformer (which is cheaper and has a proven record). I wouldn't waste my time on Microsoft's unproven device even if it can run Office.

Plays for Crap

Never understood what Microsoft was trying to say with their "Plays For Sure" nonsense. I have yet to see an MP3 that didn't play on ANYTHING capable of playing MP3s. Oh wait, this was yet another lock-in scheme to get people to use their crappy WMA format? Figures.

Re: If Commodore didn't mismanage itself to the early grave...

Well, as the original designers of the Amiga said (hidden inside Workbench 1.2): "We made Amiga, they f-cked it up." Amiga was too damn good for vulture capitalists like Irving Gould and Medhi Ali.

My dream match up would have been to see Jack Tramiel at his prime take on Bill Gates.

W.O.Frobozz
Meh

Windows 3.0

The first time I saw Windows 3.0 was during my first week in university. Being a long-time Amiga user, I laughed my ass off at what I saw was a ham-fisted attempt to recreate that which had already existed (and worked better) for almost a decade. Even the name, "Windows" was a riot...talk about stating the obvious while missing the point, as there was more to most GUI operating systems of the day than just "windows." The nerdy business student who was showing me his new toy was exactly the kind of person Microsoft was counting on...a "person of faith" who had longsuffered through DOS and was willing to ignore the very, very frequent UAEs of Microsoft's pretend "operating system."

But anyway, the joke was on me as the crash-ridden piece of junk actually took over the world, mostly propelled by the nerdy business types. Or was it...after C= bit the dust dragging Amiga along with it, I discovered a little upstart called Linux in 1993 and never looked back. SLS users represent!

Speaking of journalists, during the dark days of Microsoft's rise to power i used to enjoy reading Will Zachmann, one of the few voices who dared criticize Microsoft. Because in 1993, Windows NT was going to slaughter UNIX with it's spiffy Windows 3.1 interface and single-user experience. Yeap.

W.O.Frobozz

Yeah, "oops."

Talk about a "solution" to a problem that doesn't exist. Or rather only affects Microsoft's operating systems. UEFI isn't needed by any other OS, only WinDOS. Well that and as a convenient way to deal with the "Linux problem."

Dead Steve Jobs was dead wrong on Flash, bellows ColdFusion man

W.O.Frobozz

It's almost 2013

And using my mobile device of choice, there are almost NO sites that offer non-flash based video. That goes for newspapers, online versions of news networks, you name it. Thanks to Steve Jobs and his holy war, I still have to go to a PC in order to view this content.

I still don't understand why Adobe agreed to go along with Jobs and kill their egg-laying goose. Jobs may have killed Flash but he didn't change the minds of the media giants about this. Oh sure we're inundated with irritating and useless "mobile" versions of sites now but we're also still inundated with "You must install Adobe flash" messages as well. Thanks for nothing (again) Steve.

Halo 4 game review

W.O.Frobozz

Halo was always overhyped

The only reason the first one was such a "success" is it was released on the brand-new original X-Box, to an audience that had never seen this "first person shooter thing" before. There was nothing Halo did that long-time PC games like Unreal Tournament hadn't been doing for ages. But the X-box weenies all oohed and aahed as though the FPS had just been invented by Bill Gates himself.
