many myths about American manufacturing

.. the jobs in China making devices ..smartphones and tablets

.. we never built those in the US .. China didn't take US jobs

.. automation .. robotics .. better computer software

.. they reduced the number of hands needed for what is produced in the world

.. China manufactures about 20% of the world's goods

.. The USA manufactures about 20% of the world's goods

.. China has about 110 million manufacturing workers to do that

.. we can't even calculate the wages and productivity per worker closely

.. The USA has about 9 million manufacturing workers

.. producing some $65 per hour of product .. earning some $35 per hour in wages and benefits average

.. and working a bit over 40 hours a week average

.. China manufacturing down slightly last couple of years .. negative 2-3%

.. USA manufacturing up 6%-9% depending on sector

.. energy and resources costs are really hurting China vs USA

Intel as a contract foundry

That's important news .. there are more than a few non-competing companies that would like to use tri-gate and have Intel's shrink earlier than competitors .. Nvidia comes to mind .. this is really an Intel vs TSMC thing ..

Intel will gladly leave AMD stuck with Global Foundries

Intel is already the *in* the foundry environment .. doing big custom projects for years .. in a sense they already are a foundry for Google .. Facebook .. Amazon server designs .. Apple for Mac ..

I wonder .. if one were to estimate the in-house foundry value of chips produced by Intel .. how would that compare to TSMC ? ... TSMC 2011 sales $14.6 billion .. Intel sales $46.5 billion

Is it possible Intel is already the largest foundry producer by income ?

more throw away claptrap

"This area’s ice sheet contributes to sea level rise and this work can help us put current changes in context"

why do these people though out this clap trap at the end of an otherwise interesting article ?

The Greenland Ice thickness has increased by 2"-5mm net per year since 1992 .. seems warmer air and warmer ocean currents cause more snow to fall .. well in excess to some increased Summer melt .. so if anything .. Greenland may have a contributed a bit to the sea levels lowering in 2010-2011 .. but definitely not contributing to sea level rise .. because there is no net loss of ice sheet in Greenland for 20 years .. and we don't know the extent of loss or gain prior to 1992

Yahoo! web! traffic! BIGGER! THAN! GOOGLE! in! July!

0_Flybert_0

>>ATT.Yahoo!<<

as an ATT broadband customer my web email interface is yahoo .. my "master" yahoo ID is some dumb thing I used for a geocities website .. right now I haven't transferred my email client accounts from one PC to the one I'm using now .. so I go through the 4 accounts I have with ATT through the web .. I suppose those count as visitors to Yahoo! .. though it's about 10 minutes a week .. one I've not checked in weeks .. while I'm doing business with my gmail account .. which is up on my PC regularly through the day .. and notifies my on my Galaxy S3 where I can read and reply as well .. do web design and have a web master account with Google .. watch quite a bit of youtube .. use other Google services occasionally .. Google+

so while I may be a visitor .. and it is my providers web front .. I don't "use" Yahoo! for anything .. don't spend any time on their web properties that I'm aware of .. getting rarer to see Yahoo! News! links even ..

Climate change made sea levels fall in 2010 and 2011

Re: stop the partisan bs

yes .. if one starts from the June 1979 data point .. which was nearly 0.2C below 1980 to 1981 .. that is correct .. and clearly stated that I was starting on that zero point year ..

regardless .. the 73 climate models used by self designated climate scientists don't stand up over the 33 years of observation ..

http://www.drroyspencer.com/2013/06/still-epic-fail-73-climate-models-vs-measurements-running-5-year-means/

or I bet you think ocean temperatures are rising ..

http://www.drroyspencer.com/2013/06/global-microwave-sst-update-for-may-2013-0-01-deg-c/

read the whole site .. at least get the informed opinion of a degreed atmospheric scientist with a PhD in meteorology .. a former Senior Scientist of Climate Studies at NASA .. and with Dr. Christy .. the guy that analyses all of the NASA satellite date related to the atmosphere ..

and stop hanging around Gavin Schmidt's RealClimate blog network .. that guy won't even take questions from Spencer when they are in the same studio ..

0_Flybert_0

Re: stop the partisan bs

NomNomNom ... let me help you here .. the 1980 temperature was the same as the 1981 to 2010 average ..

the smoothed rolling average on January 1980 was zero difference from the 1981 to 2010 average

the smoothed rolling average on January 2013 was 0.24C higher than the 1981 to 2010 average

0.24C divided by 33 years = 0.00728C rise per year average = 0.073 rise per decade ..

http://aqua.nasa.gov/about/team_spencer.php

0_Flybert_0

stop the partisan bs

people .. you really need to read the newer studies .. and understand a computer model is not a study of fact based on observation .. yes .. the world warmed between 1910 and 1940 .. 30 years in a more steady manner .. and to a greater degree than from 1980 to present .. then it cooled from 1940 to 1976 or so .. not steadily .. but from 1934 to 1939 there was no arguably warmer years until 1998 and 2010.. you get a quick 0.2C rise from about 1976 to 1980 .. and we have James Hansen in 1981 publish his paper theorizing man generated CO2 would cause dangerous global warming with the projections based on certain assumptions used in his and everyone else's computer models .. in 1979 we start to get accurate world temperature reading from NASA satellites ..

taking either the 1980 temp at baseline .. or the 1981-2010 average .. the same as 1980 .. the current rolling 13 month average is 0.24C warmer over 30 years .. July 2013 was 0.17C warmer .. so on a linear basis .. which I know the warming alarmists prefer ( cause it was cooler from 1980 to 1997 which means there has been no 20 year warming trend at all since 1940 ) .. we've warmed 0.08 degrees per decade .. well within even Hansen's narrow band of natural variability .. and well below ALL the projections of temperature rise .. even those that presumed humans would stop increasing emissions by 2000 or earlier

observation .. the only valid way to test theory .. has shown Hansen's and IPCC projections to be wrong .. so wrong it would be statistically impossible for them to come true by 2050 .. or 2100

that man's land use has contributed to some of the warming is clear .. we modified over 40% of the land below timberline .. we know that our aerosols cool the atmosphere .. that our black soot is more responsible for arctic ice melt than air temperature .. we just had the least days of over -1.8C temp ( sea ice freeze temp ) in the arctic since those records were kept .. 1954 .. the current temp is at least 3 weeks earlier than normal ..

so the point is not that Australia happened to get soaked .. it's that the warmer air world wide holds more moisture ..which has resulted in the last 4 years .. with increased precipitation .. snow and rain .. that so much happened to fall in Australia is interesting .. but it's more likely the large .. sometime record snowfalls in the north US .. Canada .. Russia .. that are locking up that ocean water .. and some portion of the equally heavy rains and cool weather this spring found it's way to depleted aquifers .. it's also possible the oceans will cool because of significantly lower solar activity .. lowest in 50 years for sure .. maybe 200 years .. this will take a while .. or it may be having an effect already .. measuring *average* sea level accurately is extraordinarily difficult considering all the other factors determining sea level in a particular place .. 1m swells .. 3m tides .. wind and ocean current temperature effects on a region make it hard to buy a 5mm accuracy on sea level over the entire world

the ocean levels contract because there is more moisture locked up in snowpack .. despite the concensus media .. the greenland ice sheet has grown by an average of 2" / 5mm a year since 1992 .. and no one is certain which way it went from 1961 to 1991 from the few stations on the island .. so the warming alarmists can wring there hands about a *record* summer melt of 0.5" .. they ignore the fact that the warmer arctic air is increasing snow fall resulting in a 2" net gain each year ..

Win XP alive and kicking despite 2014 kill switch (Don't ask about Win 8)

0_Flybert_0
Paris Hilton

the internet will be at risk ..

will be building a Windows 7 machine soon .. that's for features and hardware XP won't handle .. otherwise will be keeping 2 XP machines running .. Windows problems are mostly caused by the piss poor hardware in most Win Boxen .. and negligent users .. Win95 O/S R2 32bit .. Win98SE .. both stable for the time I used them .. I've really needed no more from the Windows UI than 98SE .. Run XP in Classic so it looks like Win2000 .. also a sufficient O/S .. and I will keep my XP machines running ..

at some point soon after April 2014 .. XP will need to be isolated from the internet .. there's a lot of cash strapped SMBs that might get 3 or 4 Win7 machines where needed facing the web .. but businesses are running all kinds of programs and machinery on XP ( Win3.1 too!).. on machines that have years of life if maintained ... that being said ..

there will likely be a very serious internet security problem develop if 35% .. or even 10% of machines on the internet are running XP without security patches for the O/S and IE .. those machines will be owed within months despite the efforts of anti-virus .. security companies and government agencies .. we might be talking about 200 million machines or more to be owned .. even a 10 million machine botnet could f**k things up royally

so while MS is not obligated to keep XP secure beyond April 2014 .. if they don't .. or don't co-operate to have others do so .. the internet connected world is going to be cracked wide open and disrupted at minimum

this is a National Security issue for almost every nation in the world .. the data breech potential for industry .. banking .. a cyberwar full-on perhaps ? ..

don't think it would be unreasonable an alliance of the EU and the Americas to require MS to continue security updates for WinXP and related MS software .. US alone could require it ..

Unreal: Epic’s would-be Doom... er... Quake killer

0_Flybert_0

P2P > Server/Client ... MP > MMP

Quake and Unreal were indeed breakthrough .. however there were no games in 1997 nor in Summer 1998 that had Multiplay other than Peer to Peer .. and one was lucky to get 8 players in stable .. no real team play possible .. usually small and uninspiring mission areas for frame rate considerations ..

Then came (Starsiege) Tribes in Nov. 1998 .. the first FPS that included proper Server/Client code ( Red Baron 3D was first a couple of weeks before .. both titles were Dynamix products ) ..

having MMP with team play possible changed everything .. Unreal .. at that point .. had to become Unreal Tournament or the franchise would have died

When Tribes was made .. the game industry's consensus was that a release that was MultiPlay only could not succeed .. and within a few short years all the biggest shooters were Server Client MMP .. and still are .. Single Player there for a few hours fun and training to fight in MMP .. as I view things

IOW .. Surprise! Intel smartphone trounces ARM in power trials

0_Flybert_0
Boffin

Re: All well and good...

firstly .. ARM chip makers can't use intel's trigate / 3D FinFET tech .. which is why power draw is low .. so 20 - 22nm might be hard to achieve .. despite IBM lab examples .. Most new ARM and GPU chip process is a 32nm today and has greater volt leakage .. especially when cranked up to 1.5Ghz or more

secondly .. TSMC is having difficulty in scaling up 28 nm production .. GlobalFoundries has barely ramped it's 28 nm line .. both had claimed last year to be going to 20nm by the end of this year .. but that seems unlikely in quantity until well into 2014 .. Intel .. which has shown itself a *bit* more reliable on process roadmaps .. will be at 14nm in quantity by mid 2014

those that think intel won't gain significant inroads in the SoC business are just not paying attention to history .. Intel does not enter a market unless it sees a profitable future in it ..

perhaps intel likes to control the architecture of it's chips ... not license and therefore dependent .. or felt it couldn't compete .. with a profit against established players .. Qualcomm .. Samsung .. Xscale .. Apple .. TI .. Intel .. if you are paying attention .. doesn't bother competing in GPU either .. except as integrated in the chip die .. why compete with nVidia .. when they can co-operate and keep their common competitors .. like AMD .. suppressed together ?

Americans are NOT being terrorized !

can they exist if 99.99% of Americans have ZERO fear .. much less *terror* in going about their daily lives ?

yes indeed .. there are individuals and groups in the world .. even our own soil that have plans to cause mayhem and destruction .. our intelligence agencies need to FOCUS on those individuals and groups .. use their time investigating .. infiltrating and spying on those people .. excuse me .. out of the 1000s of Americans I know and have known since 9/11/01 ( or ever ) .. haven't met ONE that has a 'fear of terrorists' .. NEVER have heard a regular citizen say they are afraid to go to the local market .. or a sporting event .. no fear of crossing bridges .. no fear of flying ( because of terrorists )
