Microsoft plots entry into tablet trade

Google-MS deathmatch

The 7" Google tablet is supposed to come out at the end of the month. I expect that the MS tablets won't be shipping for a couple of months at least, so this is partially an attempt by MS to take the wind out of the Google announcement.

Hiking a Laser sailboat is comfortable compared to hiking on a Thistle sailboat - leaning over as far as you can on an edge only a couple of inches wide - obviously inspired by the tools of the spanish inquisition. It's been over 40 years since I last sailed on one, and I'm still traumatized by it. :).

For you nonsailors, keeping a sailboat as upright as possible usually gives you better speed.

Megaupload case near collapse: report

fishman

Irony

The MPAA/RIAA thought that killing Megaupload was going to be the turning point. But it could be in a different direction than they thought - the US government might be less interested in getting involved after being burned, foreign governments less likely to roll over for the US gov, and filesharing services learning what changes to make to be harder to eradicate.

So, you assume that those that agree with you have kids, and those that don't agree, don't have kids - none of the posts above yours stated that they didn't have kids.

I have two kids, and I've kept an eye on what they do - it's not that hard. And you don't have to pre-screen everything they do - it's easy to find reviews.

BTW, I upvoted those you disagreed with, and downvoted the one you agreed with - before I saw your post.

"I can't see many, if any, cor.porates junking their existing monitors en masse in favour of rare-as-hen's-teeth and priced-as-unobtanium widescreen touch monitors"

Just for the heck of it, I pretended that my monitor was touch, and tried to "use" it in that mannor. It takes alot of arm and hand movement with a 24" monitor, and if you have to go from screen to keyboard and back, a real pain. Mouse to keyboard takes less effort. Using the monitor as a touchscreen can be more tiring since your arm is unsupported during many motions, while with a mouse you can rest your elbow and often your wrist.

'Regrouping' Android tablet makers extend Apple reign

fishman

There is also the Barnes & Noble 7" Nook tablet that is selling well.

I've noticed some of the very cheap Android tablets that are starting to come out now have 7" capacitance screens, faster processors, etc - much better than even six months ago. By the end of the year, "good enough" 7" android tablets will be around $100, and $200 will buy a 7" android tablet with a retina quality display, etc.

Sony to ship passive 3D, OLED TVs in 2013

fishman

Re: Passive hurts my head

The current Panasonic 3D glasses are the third generation, and are much better than the earlier ones.

It really doesn't cost the manufacterer much to add in the active 3D to a TV (as long as the glasses are sold separately), and is why the better sets are sold as 3D.

fishman

Re: To hell with 3D, I want OLED

"... but to see it next year at under £4000 would, I'm sorry to say, be a complete fantasy. Oh well."

Ten years ago, a 50" plasma was around $10K. I bought one last year for $800. I expect that a 50" OLED tv will be under $1000 in 3-4 years.

Microsoft Tangos into cheap smartphones

fishman

Re: THIS is it!!!

In the US, the current Windows Phones are usually $0.99 with contract. Most smartphones in the US are sold with a contract. So I don't see it making much difference in the US market.

Of course, some have argued that the cheap Android phones have hurt Android's reputation. These cheap WP phones won't help its reputation. Plus, MS claims that 5% of the WP apps won't work - is that like the minimum windows configurations - Vista in 512MB of memory, etc.

Court rejects Tesla’s latest libel spat with Top Gear

fishman

Re: Tesla did several major fails

"4. They should not sell a car made for US in EU: Cars are not pushed to the limits in US while in EU they are"

Cars tend to be driven further per day in the US than the EU, and range is a big "limit" on electric cars. As far as speeds go, the maximum speed limit in the UK is 70mph, and most of europe is 81 mph. Many states in the US have maximum speed limits of 75 mph, and Texas and Utah have a maximum speed limit of 80 mph. And in the US, these roads are far longer than in europe, and you may be driving at those speeds for *many* hours. I've driven 1000 miles in one day many times, with speeds often over 80mph. And my car, a Ford Taurus, has 200,000 miles on it, with only routine maintenance.

fishman

Re: Re: Re: Tesla is the future, old people....

"but how often do you actually drive more than 200 miles in a day?"

Of course, 200 miles is when the batteries are new, and it's not wintertime. I wouldn't be surprised if after 4-5 years and in cold weather it would be more like 100 miles.

And I drive 700 miles in a day at least once a month. 4-5 times a month I'll drive well over 100 miles.

Pythons and Boas can easily catch respiratory infections that kill them. Winter temperatures in northern Florida are cold enough to keep them from migrating further north.

We have a boa, and we keep the cage around at around 80F. We have to be careful in the winter on how long he is taken out of the cage because the room is 68F. He caught a RI this winter and had to go on antibiotics.

At the beginning of the year, it was "just wait until Mango arrives! then we'll have caught up." Problem is that Android and IOS are moving targets.

Frankly, if WP7 Mango has trouble against most phones running Gingerbread, how much improvement will they need in WP8 when going up against ICS?
