Replace battery, boot up, desktop appears (no password required of course!) MASSIVELY slow. Solution, deinstall, all but one of the six antivirus programmes. Fixed.

Yes, but some IP addresses are in absolute form (dot quad form) so you can't block them at the hosts file, you have to use a firewall of some kind. The Addresses CURRENTLY in use are well known, just Google them, but don't be caught out when they change.
