Six of the best gaming keyboard and mouse combos

Irongut

"Logitech products last forever... I want to be sure I’m not going to have to replace my mouse for the next five years, I find Logitech is a safe bet."

Unfortunately I find the opposite. If I want the right mouse button to die within 2 years then Logitech is the brand of choice. Not that I can find a decent alternative who make mice that don't look like the demented offspring of a Geiger Alien and a T-1000 so I'm usually stuck with them.

You'll find Yoda at the back of every IT conference

Irongut

HA!

I am indeed the Yoda at the back that tells the presenter he's wrong, his product is shit, it's overpriced or all three. I look more like an extra from Game of Thrones though so presenters usually look a bit nervous when I get going.

Re: But this has four!!

A pen is a single function tool, you use it to write things.

A computer is a multi function tool, you can use it to write things, play music, games, films, watch TV, run a factory, run a power station, run a ship, fly a plane, keep in touch with friends, spy on your neighbours, etc, etc, etc. So obviously a computer needs a general purpose operating system to make it work, not a single program with a single function.

Gartner's Special Report: Should you believe the hype?

Re: There are still some games out there...

There is a moral difference but I think you've got it the wrong way round. Realistic FPS games about a war glorify it far more than some stupid Mario rip off. They show what looks like real people being shot, dismembered, tortured and dying and then ask the player to join in. Can you think of a better strategy to kill as many Palestinians as possible than the Israeli army? Give it a go...

Personally I prefer my FPS in the Doom mould rather than the CoD mould. I'm much happier blasting demons, zombies, robots, etc than people.

Irongut

I think the issue here is that this war is current whereas the Afghanistan and Iraq wars are (officially) over. So it's ok to glorify a historical war but not a current one.

That time is not wasted. I come up with some of my best ideas while walking to work in the morning. Time spent away from a problem doing 'nothing' is often the most productive.

PEAK LANDFILL: Why tablet gloom is good news for Windows users

Irongut

Re: Post PC

"Email, web browsing, writing a book, all things that are easily achievable on a tablet."

I disagree. Reading email and web browsing sure. Writing a short email, ok. But, if I want to write a longer email, that maybe includes a few web links and/or attachments, then I will put down the tablet and pick up the mouse & keyboard.

As for writing a book? You really expect people to write 80,000 - 120,000 words on a software keyboard? Pull the other one, its less excruciating.

Sonos AXES support for Apple's iOS4 and 5

Irongut

TV Remote Analogy

"Imagine if your TV supplier sent you a message saying your remote control would no longer work once the TV software was updated?"

This is a false analogy. The reality is more like your TV manufacturer sends you a message saying your old remote control will no longer work once the TV software is updated but you can pick up a new one from your local electronics store free of charge.

Sonos do not make iThings only the control app that goes with their overpriced audio equipment. You may well find that the reason for this change is that Apple are forcing their hand. Or that they want to use iOS features not available in the old versions in order to give you a better experience.

Will Microsoft devices sit happily on a single platform?

Irongut

A user interface designed for a 24" monitor with keyboard and mouse will not work on a 4" touchscreen phone. Similarly an interface designed for that phone will look like shite on a 24" monitor. You see that on a tablet when running apps that were only designed for phones.

So one code base fits all will not work. At the very least you need a UI for each device type.

Say goodbye to the noughties: Yesterday’s hi-fi biz is BUSTED, bro

Irongut

"multi-room", a sector created by Sonos?

I had a multi-room Hi-Fi back in my student days some 20+ years ago. My amp allowed two sets of speakers which could be played individually or at the same time and I had a pair mounted to the roof in the bathroom as well as those in my room. Dark Side of the Moon is great in the bath and, when it was time to turn the record over, I had voice control - shouting my flatmates. :)

Created by Sonos? My arse!

Assange™ makes fresh bid for FREEDOM from Scotland Yard's 'physical encirclement'

Re: Who cost the taxpayer £6M?

Actually it is much worse than callous or sociopathic, you forgot the rule of law. Assange is not a perpetrator because he has not committed any crime. Until he is convicted he is merely an innocent man who has been accused. So by strict application of your views we should spend absolutely nothing.
