Mozilla's 'Boot to Gecko' morphs into Firefox OS

Bush_rat
Stop

Ba humbug!

Don't get me wrong, C/C++ are great for the hard core of us, but I'm a web guy, and the idea of being able to get a TRUELY open source phone that I can create "apps" for right on the phone and completely modify every aspect of the user interface is enough of a selling point.

Besides, think of it from this perspective, kid gets a Mozilla OS device, kid hates small icons, kid learns CSS in 5-10 minutes and changes icon. Kid now modifies app and decides to make his own. Boom! A new app developer is born, sure it's HTML so what? Kid may now decide C++ is for him and move ahead to that.

Regardless of the dev side of the phone it's a easily customisable phone that is cheap.

Stonehenge...

Built by farmers?!?!

WRONG! It was built in ancient times before the dawn of history,

And nobody knows who they are what what they were doing,

But we do know that

It's where the demons dwell, where the banshees live, and they do live well.

It's where a mans a man, and the children dance to the pipes of pan.

Tis a magic place where the moon doth rise with a dragons face.

Where the virgins lay.

It's where the cats meow.

The children also like dancing.

Sadly the little people of Stonehenge are lost, and we will never know what they would say to us.

Sounds good

Sure it's been done before, but does it really matter? The markup is the same regardless of the IDE, unless the IDE uses some Homebrew language, in which case it shouldn't be supported! At the moment HTML(let alone HTML5!) is taught terribly in the schools in my area, they refuse to use any browser other than IE, encourage bad habits and outdated tags like marque and for some reason decide to forgoe JavaScript and CSS because "It's too compllex". Complex my arse these are 7th graders! CSS, HTML, and JavaScript, IMHO are stupidly easy to grasp, JS is the most complex, by a small margin.

Hopefully spoon-feeding them HTML5 will get them off their asses!

Hmmmmm....

The concept is interesting, and there is proof that a web browser CAN do some pretty cool stuff. Like Quake 2 in browser, almost every popular smartphone game's HTML5 adaptation and of course things like CloudMe. And not to mention the plethora of awesome stuff on ChromeExperiments.com.

But, the way I see this being fun, is being able to change the WHOLE layout of a "home screen" with a CSS file. The only issue I can see is how on earth you'd stop a "rogue" website calling a random in some random country. Probably some kind of permission thing (No SHIT!)

P.S Were my eyes deceiving me, or did I read 5 or so spelling errors in that article.

Wrong idea, wrong place

Its a dumb idea on multiple levels, but if they have to do it any where, do it somewhere that makes sense. Like a kindergarten, a gym or roads. Kindergartens have 20-30 small children running in circles and jumping, a gym has 'roid nuts lifting 500 tonne weights, and roads have cars. All of which would generated way more juice than a civilised establishment.

Re: I predict ultrasonic networking

So in few words, you want dial-up, except high pitch?

Isn't dial-up about 20Bits a second or something similar. I don't see it taking off.

Light is good, its the fastest thing we can "control" in our universe and therefore ideal for data transfer. But in a cable makes sense because optic fibre can carry the light and there are no issues with line of sight. But wireless, all you'd need to do to corrupt a file is throw a mirror in the way.

Face palm at the Li-Fi concept. And a pair of leg warmers for you, my commentard, for that blast from the 80's!

Re: Linux and OS X

"I'm just curious, why is it that I can have my pick of half a dozen desktop environments on Linux, selecting one at log-on, but each Windows version only offers one desktop? It would seem an obvious advantage for Microsoft to offer choices as well, so why don't they?"

Because Windows users are already rolling on the floor in confusion over Profesional, Ultimate, Starter or Home Premium. I've used all 4 and the only difference I noticed was between starter and every thing else over wifi issues and desktop background. Which I think is disgusting, even the shitiest of OS's don't force you to look at there logo the whole time.

But windows 8 will let you choose between the Metro interface and the normal desktop, once you've logged in.

Bush_rat
Linux

Linux and OS X

Mac is currently moving in this direction as well, so there will be only one solution. Linux. With valve already porting steam and Left 4 Dead to Ubuntu, I see that making Linux and its many variants quite appealing.

Windows was "great" because it always stayed roughly the same. But if M$ go and release this then all those years of providing a solid backbone in the OS market will have been for nothing.

I know Ubuntu is doing the whole "tabletification" thing to, but it's only 1 or 2 terminal commands away from being exactly what windows should be. And the Ubuntu software centre is great, it doesn't get any special access, AFAIC it's just a pretty front end to apt-get.

As for mac, it's pretty and easy to use, but if keeps heading in this direction, it'll be Ubuntu all the way, with a fedora on top.

Shame...

Quantum is science that's gonna take me a while to wrap my poor frazzled head around. It might not be as complex as I think, but when I hear things like "two places at once" or "teleportation" used with the word "Quantum", every thing I thought I knew about science is questioned. I just trust the prof to know what he's doing.

Besides, isn't questioning science what science is all about.

My 2 cents...

The Anti-Piracy Orbital Super Laser, or APOSL, would target pirates by tracking their IP and either destroy the whole house, or the computer, depending on the level of piracy. This simple scale will explain what causes what:

Conspiracy to Attempt Piracy - The Computer

Attempted Piracy - The Room

Pirating 3 minutes of media - The House

Anything else - The House and Tour bank account

This system will eliminate the need for sueing people into oblivion, rather the APOSL would zap them into oblivion. Of course the well prepped basement warrior will build his basement under ground(no shit!) which will mean the APOSL will need to be powered directly by the sun.

Using napkin math, I predict a build time of 27 years at a cost of $34 trillion dollars, but we'll make that money back from all of the pirates that will be stopped because of the system.

Re: Steambox? Can't see it happening

"Nobody's going to buy something that can't play the 90% or more of Steam games without a Linux port. Unless HL3 is exclusively released on it... ;-)"

If it comes with Half Life 3, Left 4 Dead 2/3 and Counter Strike:GO then the uptake by Valve fanbois (like me) would cause a fair few games to get a linux port.

Im all for it, they just need to make sure that it's hardware is at least on par with the next reincarnations of the Xbox and Playstation.

Am I the only one that saw this coming? What happened here is there are too many 'beta' testers using Siri and its throttling her limited server based power. The exact same thing happened 2 weeks ago with the Raspberry Pi and, let's be honest, I don't know how well the reg would cope with Siri's level of demand.

But instead of giving back wrong answers, slow down the process allowing for the same level of error checking for everyone, and if too many people use it at once and the request line is too long, just send back a "server busy :("

Valve responds to Half-Life 3 grumbles

Bush_rat
WTF?

Are you Mental?

I'm sorry, but what rock that crushed your sense of joy and laughter have you been living under? Half-Life is STILL one of the best FPS you can get. Sure the graphics look a bit dated, but not by much, but the physics engine, story and puzzles are infinitely better than anything you can get today. Call of Duty and Battlefield have declared "I'm better!' "no Im better" war, and consequently, snuffed out all 'real' competition. On rare occasion a beacon of individuality appears and disappears.

Half-Life is and always will be an awesome game! just look at GMod, Portal, Left4Dead and Team Fortress 2, they are all perfect examples of games that probably never would've existed without Half-Life and its engine. and they are all completely different games that all have attracted completely different crowds of gamers.

So Half-Life is dead huh?

I only recently got the Half Life series off steam and to hit that nail biting cliff hanger with no mention of a sequel gave me 2 and a bit strokes. I, like many people, am really pissed off that its taken this long to say yes or no on the whole thing, but the last 6 installments in the series were so good, I am willing to forget my anger if this one will uphold the awesomeness of the series.
