Forgetting the history of Unix is coding us into a corner

I was thinking this was leading to a discussion on Plan 9

I actually downloaded Plan 9 at some point and gave it a try. I admired it from a tech perspective but wasn't sure how it could be useful at that time ... USL was actually across the street in Summit, New Jersey from where I worked for a few years ...

Threads

An interesting point is that AMD can run two threads per core while Ampere runs 1. So Bergamo has 256 threads while AmpereOne with 192 cores has 192 threads ...

I love the Linux desktop, but that doesn't mean I don't see its problems all too well

Hello - I would like to engage you in a discussion about what is really wrong with the Linux desktop. It really doesn't have much to do with the variety of distros or interfaces. It really comes down to the fact that the developers are not interested in fixing the small holes (like printing and reliable drive mounting) that are required to really have a functioning desktop, plus the fact that support is really terrible (although you could argue it is for the other desktops as well). Interestingly, Linux applications have come a long way and are no longer really a problem. I have been using Linux since it first came out and Unix before that.

I don't understand this article. Merging vCloud air with Virtustream in no way negatively impacts vCloud air. The thing VS brings to the table is deep enterprise experience. For example, VS has far better SAP production experience then the competitors. vCloud air and VS together would have better economy of scale ...

District tampering

District re-sizing/tampering certainly plays a role in how these goof balls get re-elected every year. Their real goal is to get their fat paycheck and pension.

IBM/SAP HANA APPLIANCE

One of the most interesting IBM appliances was not mentioned - the HANA in memory database developed with SAP. Since IBM uses GPFS in it's version, it ultimately will be able to do multiple engines like DB2 Purescale. It also runs on Linux. It is not available for general purpose use yet, but a version that sits under SAP BW will soon be available to be followed later by versions that run the entire SAP stack.
