Stripped to the core and full of Xfce: Xubuntu Linux loses it

Get with the times

Seriously, we're in 2015 people. It's all about the bling. It's all about the bells and whistles. You minimalists are trying to strip the computing experience back to the dark ages.

That's why I run Windows 8.1. A proper, modern operating system with a world class user experience. With the benefit of being designed by the world's finest engineering teams in Redmond - you know that it's secure, safe and a pleasure to look at.

Why run a Lada when you can have a Bugatti Veyron for a few quid? Freetards know no logic.

$19 billion made from dumped e-waste every year, says UN

Downvoted again. This time for whining about last time.

What you wrote is perfectly true, but no-one likes a cassandra.

CherylWillBounceBack

There is a very straightforward answer to this. Make it legal, and dump any redundant electrical item in the sea, thus rendering it useless on the black market.

This has additional benefits - I would instigate a law that any technology older than three years should be disposed of in this manner, and the wealth creation and innovation can continue unabated. We need rid of these frugal elements of society who refuse to consume.

Elon Musk: I'm neither a samurai nor a bastard

20 down votes. Poe's law is proven again. The fact you all thought I was serious is even more frightening than my post.

CherylWillBounceBack

I'm disappointed with Musk for distancing himself from that quote. I'm totally of that sentiment. Its estimated that 107 billion humans have been born since we evolved. Anyone who thinks their 'special bundle of joy' is more important then contributing to a business - especially ones the like of which Musk runs - is delusional. Think big. Under Musk, we go to Mars. Work the damn hours.

Carlos: Slim your working week to just three days of toil

CherylWillBounceBack

I've worked a three day week for the past 5 years. I'm more productive both at work and outside of work, less stressed, healthier and contrary to what one would potentially expect despite the nominal salary drop, financially better off because

a) I'm not spending money on consumer items and convenience foods to make me feel better/because I'm too tired to do things myself

b) I have more time to invest what I already have properly.

It's the exception in Software Engineering to do so, but it's worked out excellently for both the company and me. I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

However, I'll stick with the 7.5 hour days though thanks Carlos.

Re: Looks good, but...

Frankly, the £300 Nexus 5 already looks to be an extravagant luxury compared to a £100 (easily unlocked) Motorola Moto G from Tesco. I bought one for my parents the other day, and for that amount of money it's a phenomenal device - fast, KitKat enabled and a lovely screen. If I didn't have vision issues which mean that, for me, large screen phones make a lot of sense, I'd not buy anything else, because there's nothing massively compelling in any other device that justifies the extreme hike in price. I'd certainly have one over a Nexus or any other sub 5.5" device.

Vinyl sales reach 15 year high, Blighty becomes No. 3 music buyer

Re: Have you seen the price of used vinyl ?

Charity shops can be either have no clue or be extremely clued up when it comes to vinyl.

If you really want to see what's currently desirable, look at prices of decent 90's vinyl on ebay (i.e. suede, my bloody valentine). MBV vinyl goes for more than a bitcoin.

Intel's Centrino notebook platform is 10 years old

CherylWillBounceBack

True enough. But once the batteries die any decent laptop from the last decade makes a good desktop replacement. Plug in 24" screen, keyboard and mouse and speakers you have quite a nice dual screen set up, or just plug it in in the kitchen for watching youtube/iplayer etc.

Just FYI, the spanish for girlfriend is 'Novia'. Amiga is used when she's just a female friend, like you would use Amigo for a male friend.
