Does my boom look big in this? New universe measurements bewilder boffins

COSMIC RECALCULATION

-- to Dr. Wendy L. Freedman

In the cosmos, a crisis brews today,

regarding the standard model that’s held.

“Things expand too fast,” astronomers say,

“The Hubble constant is being excelled.

“We’ve graphed predictions and made a table,

but Expansion’s chosen another path.

Unfortunately, we are unable

to force Creation to follow our math.

“The discrepancy’s nearly nine percent,

between expectations and what we view.”

This causes cosmologists to lament,

“We may need physics entirely new.”

This prospect prompts a great consternation,

since starting fresh brings small consolation.

FEARFUL SYMMETRY (from Songs Of Experiments)

-- James Ph. Kotsybar

Beyond notice, out of sight

in dimensions curled up tight,

shall only weakened gravity

suggest your supersymmetry?

Do you match, sine qua non,

boson to a fermion?

Will you ever edify

how the forces unify?

In what quanta, small or large,

will we find your mass and charge?

In what membranes do you roam?

Which dimensions call you home?

In magnetic chambers narrow,

will you tell us of time’s arrow?

Have you broken, in the past?

How long can your components last?

Quarks from gluons will divide

when we make hadrons collide:

Will this show us where you hide

or leave us still unsatisfied?

Beyond notice, out of sight

in dimensions curled up tight,

will only highest energy

reveal your supersymmetry?

TOPPING THE STAR CHARTS

Voyager 1’s “The Sounds Of Earth”

-- James Ph. Kotsybar

Eleven billion miles from the sun

a record, golden when it left these parts,

a runaway hit on Voyager One,

at Ophiuchus, sure to top the charts,

will introduce Mozart to other stars,

not to mention Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode”.

The knock-offs sold in alien bazaars

will knock their socks off or at least it should

make them extend their eyestalks in surprise.

They’ll soon begin to learn to sing along

to whales recorded and the baby’s cries —

adepts might even master Earth’s birdsong.

Should Beethoven not prove to be their fave,

Then Guan PingHu’s GuQin could be their rave.

The God Particle (haiku by James Ph. Kotsbar)

It’s the right "footprint."

With 5-sigma certainty,

there it was; we’re sure.

NEBULAE

-- James Ph. Kotsybar

The remnants of supernovae disperse

behemoth art, when stars annihilate.

“Sombrero”, “Crab” and “Horseshead” populate

the gallery of our known universe.

There’s “Ant,” “Tarantula”, and Pelican.”

There’s “Eagle” and “Pillars Of Creation,”

and even one called “Big Running Chicken.”

One slightly resembles our great nation.

These interstellar Rorschach tests reveal

the shapes we recognize within our world,

like “Hamburger,” “Butterfly” and “Pinwheel,”

but they are the guts of stars that are hurled.

Each may have destroyed some sentient race,

but, “Look! It’s like a pretty rose in space!”

God particle may be within our grasp

This is very nearly a haiku.

UNPUBLISHED FINDINGS

-- James Ph. Kotsybar

They granulate the universe

to pulp

crashing particles only newly found.

They figure their trajectories

and gulp,

“So much data upon which to expound!”

Their energies

unbound by quantum course,

they separate the world

we think we know.

They rip particles into force

by force.

Unification’s where they say they’ll go.

When, at last,

they prove life is illusion,

where do you think they’ll publish the result?

They may just ascend beyond confusion

and leave us in the lurch of the occult,

for once that testimony’s imparted,

expostulation just seems false-hearted.
