Seagate squeezes out 4TB desktop monster

15 years from now we'll be shaking our heads at how much we had to pay for a 4 TB drive... oh wait, we already are.

Massive hard drives are great for back up - redundancy but for the average Joe they promote laziness. Also, the bigger the drive the greater the disaster when it fails or they muck up their PC. Having said that, I've experienced greater reliability out of Seagate than I've had with WD, Deskstar and the least dependable being Maxtor (which Seagate snapped up years ago). YMMV of course.

I installed the preview on an old single core Amd 4000 (2.4ghz) with 2 gigs of ram and was impressed with how snappy it was. Much snappier than 7 which runs reasonably well on the old beast. So, as Jason 7 said, if you can upgrade an older XP or Vista machine to this for 40 bucks then go for it.

Sure it took me 5 minutes to figure out how to turn it off and I never really fell in love with Metro but I didn't spend a lot of time with it because it wasn't on my main machine. For forty dollars I'll probably give it another go.

Speaking of free publicity from the media...

If I see another article in the local paper or story on the evening news about what somebody was capable of doing with their iPad -- something that any tablet, or for that matter any laptop\netbook made within the last ten years, is equally capable of doing -- I'm going to... punch a hole in some drywall.

Imagine if the new ipaD came with a dock-able keyboard that doubled it's battery life and pretty much made it an ultra-light notebook. It would have pushed WWIII or an alien landing to page

My wife has an original Ipad and it's a great little device (other than itunes) but I certainly couldn't get her to upgrade if I tried. "Nothing wrong with the one I have".

Netflix was a big eye opener for Rogers and Bell subscribers as the lower tiers of their multi-tiered smoke n' mirrors service quickly learned about "caps" and the importance of upgrading service or paying absurd overage charges. Yup, we were some of the first folks on this planet to be awarded bandwidth restrictions in a valiant effort by our ISPs to punish those file sharing pigs... scum really.

So what's the "negotiation" about? A voluntary raising of bandwidth caps as Rogers did a while back? The maximum residential tier, of which there are about five, is 100.00 Cdn (and our dollars are like real dollars these days) for 250 GBs a month. I wonder how much of that Siri will chew up?

I recall over a decade ago when Bell and Rogers first entertained the idea of caps. They offered only one service (no tiers) and they were proposing a 20 GB cap! Of course, those of us that could see beyond our stubby frost bitten noses new this would be absolutely unmanageable in the near future but the fanbois, and yes, even slimy ISPs have those, exclaimed, "20 GBs! OMG! Who would ever need that much? Only filthy music pirates and porn downloaders!"

Avast false alarm hits Steam's weekend gamers

Several years ago I switched to Avast from AVG and encouraged others who had no AV to do so as well. Then late one night an Avast update detected every .exe as a virus. Fortunately it was late and nobody else I know had caught the update otherwise I would have been very busy. It was corrected the next day but such a mess up bruised my faith in them. Later on I switched to MSE and I install it on any AV free PC I work on. It's served me quite well.

This is probably more like a Prime vers. 2.0. A higher quality screen (believe it or not) and polymer back to resolve wi-fi and GPS issue of the original Prime. Same guts though.

At the present pace that Asus is moving at I imagine they'll have the same number of tablets as they have netbooks. I'd love to have one of these but I figure if I wait until the end of the year I'll have a half dozen choices.
