Build your own in 10 min !
I've found it preferable to build my own linux 'distro' using a debian minimal install iso. Its pretty straightforward and infinitely customizable using both the Debian and Ubuntu reps, either in deb packages or with source files for own build of apps.

I prefer to keep it basic with just Fluxbox, a terminal and a few other bits and bobs to start, but you can substitute those for pretty much anything including Gnome, KDE, LXDE, and much much more from the vast Debian/Ubuntu resources.
The Debian minimal I've found also to be faster and more responsive than others, and I've tried quite a few.
