Galaxy drives up profits for Samsung

WTF?

$4.7bn drop in the ocean?

"However, despite the enormous growth in Samsung's profits, they're a drop in the ocean compared to Apple's recently released results."

Are you serious? A quick check on the calculator: 4.7 / 13.06 =~ 40%

And this from a company who's rounded rectangle shaped products were blocked from sale in many countries. Also, $4.7bn probably goes a long way in Korea.

I think Samsung is doing an awesome job. Their phones look fantastic. Two years ago the only touchscreen smartphones I saw were iPhones. Now I see just as many (or more) people carrying Samsungs.

If you said my income was a drop in the ocean compared to Apple's, I can get behind that. But Samsung's 40%?

Who on earth reads a book by turning 4 pages at a time? Or flip back and forth stopping at random pages?

HUD's up! Ubuntu creates menu-free GUI

+1

This was my first thought, too.

I use the search box on windows and dmenu with xmonad on linux, which work great because I already know the name of the application.

But if this replaces all menus, including context menus, how would I ever know that there is a duplicate command for the selected object for example? And isn't right click / select duplicate from the context menu less work then hitting a shortcut for HUD, typing "dupli", then arrow key select the correct duplicate option from the choices that come up?

This might be a great feature in addition to menus, but not completely hiding the menus and replacing them.

Give me the mouse!

"Trackpads are treacherous at the best of times and even multi-touch gesture support does little in the ways to compete with the reliability of a regular mouse peripheral."

Thanks for telling them how it is. Trackpads suck. Especially the ones without buttons.

I've heard that some company even makes a magical trackpad to be used with desktop computers. Now explain that to me. Why would anyone downgrade from a mouse to a trackpad?

great reasoning to get the ipad

This will be a great argument for kids who want an ipad. 'Look, dad, not only can I read textbooks on this purely educational device, I can even publish my own!'

Of course no textbook will ever be read on it. Who has time for that when there's angry birds to kill?

I have yet to see one kid with an idevice using it for other than gaming or working on social media stardom.

Yes, it does.

If you paid 10-20% off for a year old laptop, you paid too much.

I've sold my old Macbook Pro (similar to the one reviewed here) and my old Samsung laptop, each after about a year of use.

I've got about 60% of the original price of both. Except, because the MBP was a lot more expensive, in a year I lost $600 on the Macbook Pro, but only $300 on the Samsung.

Both laptops were in perfect shape.
