Post-PC world? POST-MAC WORLD more like

Surface debacle distraction...

Why would alleged sales figures be released for the quarter before most of the manfacturer's product lines are due to be refreshed? Clearly customers were/are waiting for imminent refreshes for; Mac Pro, iMac, MacBook Pro & Mac Mini.

More importantly, what gullible fool would take the figures seriously?

Missing a trick...

Though I can see the iPad as a fold-out/telescopic replacement to the screens in business class (shows how long it's been since I was last upgraded). Apple would be missing a trick here if they didn't lose the aluminium shell and drop one into the back of every Boeing/Airbus head-rest that comes off the production line.

Now that would be marketing!

Another review...

...based almost exclusively on hardware - the least relevant part of the system. It appears in not falling for Apple's slick marketing, the register has fallen for Microsofts!

Thumb Up

2008 24" 2.4GHz iMac

I'm writing this on one.

And how pissed off would you be if Apple produced a Quad-core iMac only for you to find out there's no real speed increase . PC users can always run speed tests and benchmark systems to convince themselves they've made the right decision but us Mac users need real results from our technology so we'll happily wait 'til 10.6 is released and have a faster, more productive machine rather than higher figures on a spec sheet.

Let Macs be Macs and PCs be PCs...

I know it must be embarrassing/annoying that an army of Windows & LINUX developers can't come up with software of the same quality that Apple gives away but is the open business model so weak that it's proponents need to break Apple's integrated model with legislation?

US consumers flock to Mac laptops

McDave

@AC

Why are you comparing prices of different products in different categories? The average consumer can't do anything useful with a Windows machine but give them a Mac and they're away doing everything the Windows machine promised. It's like saying a kit-car is cheaper than a completed, useful production model - of course it is!

(Incidentally once you've spec'd the Windows PC up to that MacBook level not forgetting webcams, decent LCD & 802.11n the difference cost is only about 10% - not that we're fooled by hardware specs anymore)

Vista's great!

If you have a top-of-the-line notebook and haven't used anything else.

Who's more stupid? The person who has a life and won't tolerate crap design, or the person who think's he's clever by 'figuring out a sophisticated OS'?

Apple TV getting better by staying the same

AppleTV was a ccused of being a flop because TV & Film pilferers did so in MPEG-4/ASP (XviD et al). Now they do it in MPEG-4/AVC (H.264) many of the 720p downloads work directly & gorgeously.

AppleTV was way ahead of it's time & now the world's catching up it better than ever!

Nothing to do with DRM...

...it's the subscription model that's no good. Like everything else, buyer beware.

I would have thought one of the other services could 'buy out' the subscriptions though.

Keep the iMac all-in-one format

Surely 90%+ of the market aren't into hardware upgrading/optimising. Apple need to keep doing what they're doing and educating people that the software is the only part of the machine they'll use, so focus on that and don't get distracted by stuff you'll never really understand.

& c'mon no enterprise really uses Windows! It's just a ploy to keep employees busy. Any serious business is done on UNIX/LINUX and most media production on OSX - Windows is good for stealing it though!

Giles, you've hit the nail on the head. The guys who slate Macs all have something in common - they've never actually used one.

AppleTV is HiDef

For those who've never seen it the 720p content is great! Given that 90% of all "HiDef" LCD TVs being sold have 1366 x 768 panels the question is why are you holding out for 1080i or 1080p? It takes forever to download something you'll never actually see!

AppleTV is New TV

At last, an article that seems to get where AppleTV is coming from (the DVR is dead), now people just need to make the mental shift to acknowledge that most TV isn't live. VCRs, PVR etc were created so that TV doesn't have to be watched 'live' & it can fit into our schedule. Because of this, downloading is fine, it doesn’t have to be instant and can happily chug away overnight. In fact 95% of the TV I watch is like this so I don’t need 100Mbps connections just a reasonable download plan (20GB/month is enough for six 720p show episodes per week) & a couple of Mbps.

I’m running AppleTV in NZ and our services are way behind – we don’t even have mainstream HD broadcast! Thanks to AppleTV & a utility called TV Shows I’ve been able to download, convert & watch Lost Season 3 in HD 2-3 weeks before it’s aired here in SD (it would be an overnight job if my iMac was current). As soon as this is available via iTunes NZ I’ll happily ditch my Sky subscription and cough up. You can get an idea of how this will work by subscribing to an HD podcast via iTunes (say, recent casts of Dinner with the band), you click one button & later in the week when you have a few minutes to watch TV – there it is in HiDef!

Just as people tried to shoehorn AppleTV into other, unsuccessful media adapter moulds I think too many people are trying to apply current TV rules and practices to a totally new concept – the one we’ve been asking for….for the last 30 years.

Have fun with New TV, McD
