Is Windows 10 ignoring sysadmins' network QoS settings?

Stuporhero

Windows 10, amazing for some reasons, awful for others

Damn it. Microsoft nearly had it right with Windows 10.

Updates in the Kernel for better performance - YES

Improvements to the audio system meaning leading to very low audio latency when using USB audio devices - YES

Improved DirectX for gamers - YES

Return of the Start menu - YES

I even like the look, though beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

But those privacy issues and their update system needs to die pronto. Hell, I'd be happy to kill the universal apps too for my usage.

Dropbox gets all up in your kernel with Project Infinite. Cue uproar

Stuporhero

Good idea if implemented properly!

This has given me a cracking idea. I've been meaning to put my RasPi2 to some use and a SMB <-> Dropbox proxy that doesn't touch my other devices' OS kernels would be perfect!!

TWO can play this 64-bit mobile game, says Samsung, crossly

Re: Why oh why

64 bit slower? I've never seen that in my time (running 64 bit apps on 64 bit processors). It's usually 20-30% faster for a 20-30% extra RAM requirement.

It's normally a bit slower running a 32bit app (thanks to thunking)

Stuporhero

Re: Why oh why

This is horse manure. Twice the registers doesn't mean twice the speed. What's happened with past architectures is a 20-30% increase in speed. Also I don't see how Oracle need to get involved as Google run dalvik which is it's own VM and Java->Dalvik compiler.

Out of interest is there a 64-bit compile of Android?

Stuporhero

At a cost.

64 bit apps are faster, usually 20-30%. That however is one side of the double-edged sword. 64 bit apps require more memory to run, so we should expect to see RAM jumps in specifications in the future (bearing in mind there's been a fire at one of the fabrication plants expect memory to cost more too)

A very valid point with ARMv8 however.

Windows 8.1: So it's, er, half-speed ahead for Microsoft's Plan A

Thumb Up

Re: Search as primary means of navigation?

With this, how many of us need search in the first place? A bit of organization goes a long way.

US diplomat: If EU allows 'right to be forgotten' ... it might spark TRADE WAR

Re: You seem to be forgetting...

If this doesn't go through I'll be first to protest it.

We'll see in Argentina won't we.

Re: The USA is sabre rattling again

Then you have the power to make the change. History is littered with revolt.

I was just about to say "Take THAT Facebook!"

Microsoft to end Windows 8 discounts on January 31

...

Thieving b**tards. It'd probably be more if the EU fined them again.

Re: hmmmm

Amen. The full screen interface does everything to stop me multi-tasking. On a Digital Audio Workstation you'd be happier to have something more minimal.

Microsoft says Google trying to undermine Windows Phone

Stuporhero

This is just idiotic. The difference here is that would definitely be monopolistic (Windows being pretty much shoehorned onto nearly every non-apple PC by a trade "agreement") as opposed to hardware manufacturers being allowed to make all types of mobile devices (except Nokia now obviously) and people picking what they like best.

Wait, are you Steve Jobs' reincarnation?

Re: Google should propose to Microsoft a $15/device charge for YouTube access

They should match the cost of Microsoft's patents

Try it on a tablet

No fullscreen! Why Google WHY!?!

Android 'stands on Microsoft's shoulders', says MS lawyer

Stuporhero
FAIL

If Android stands on Microsoft's shoulders

Then Windows wobbles precariously on IBM and Xerox PARCs.

I thought lawyers were smarter than that.
