Capita hops on UK's years-late, billions-over-budget Emergency Services Network to keep legacy system alive

EE Data

The article states:

The system will run on EE's 4G network, giving police, ambulance and fire services priority

I agree that the Emergency Services Should get priority - but it does beg the question, if there is a major incident close-by does that mean that ordinary EE subscribers will suddenly find themselves devoid of any Data Services? Queue mass exodus of EE users that rely on their Data Services.

Things that make you go .hm... Has a piece of the internet just sunk into the ocean? It appears so

Bye Bye

I have a feeling that after this 'slight issue' that his clients will be looking for business continuity plans or looking to migrate away. Not ideal to lose touch with your registry provider when registrations are due for renewal

Thumb Down

I'll have some of that business please

Are they serious £23m per plane to give it a software upgrade or does that include hardware upgrades to allow the software upgrade?

I realise that there is going to be a lot of man hours in Dev, Testing and QA of the upgrade but that is serious wonga for a Software Upgrade of one unit.

I'd like them to just provide me with a working voice line. Reported a noisy line to SkyTalk - OR took 3 days and the fix was to give us no service at home and a busy tone for anyone that calls us - oddly Broadband is still working so must be an exchange fault as we aren't on FTTC and our BB is direct from the Sky kit in the Exchange.

So I need to duck at 6:42 tomorrow morning? I hope it doesn't interrupt my usual wake-up to Chris on Radio Two :-)

New Royal Navy Wildcat helicopters can't transmit vital data

Gti Jazz Blue

You couldn't make this up

WOW how much does each Wildcat cost £26M? and it still has to rely on Voice Mk1 for data exchange - what bean counter dreamed up this saving.

Zen loses its chill: UK biz ISP falls offline for four hours and counting

Re: Zen Downtime in our case was approx 8 hours (2 X Business FTTC)

This afternoon, tomorrow I don't mind but the key is to be frank about the root cause and inform their clients what plans they have to mitigate the risk ongoing.

Major London problem hits BT broadband across southeast

Gti Jazz Blue

Odd issue too

The odd thing is that there was some packet traffic OK - I could ping the DNS servers at our ISP and the OpenDNS ones but couldn't do a lookup using them.

Our ISP initially stated that it was an Authentication issue, though the routers on both of my circuits effected showed that they were fine and authenticated.

Re: Key word here is "Redundancy".

You build redundancy into the set up of the exchange, it's systems and environment, then short of the actual building failing (falling down etc) the network should continue to function.

BT have a major responsibility due to their almost monopoly on the infrastructure used by many. They need to live up to that responsibility.

Well if it is FARADAY again it is the third major failure recently, even effected us down on the South Coast.

Wrote to my MP last time asking if BT are a competent enough supplier, he still hasn't had a response from the Minister responsible (Ed Vaizey). So emailed him and reminded him and pointed out the failure again today.

BT hires another battalion of troops to speed fibre rollout

I'm not happy, as I should be able to experience a connection in the region of 25Mb/s given my line conditions.

But because BT have chosen not to upgrade our cabinet I'm stuck with the 6Mb/s connection back to the exchange. Incidentally the cabinet that has been enabled is closer to the exchange than ours.

Gti Jazz Blue

Well that is all fine and dandy as long as BT upgrade the cabinet that you are connected to. Our exchange has been migrated to FTTC, but the cabinet that supplies our Village hasn't, the daft thing is that the cabinet on the other side of the (minor) road to ours has it's twin but ours doesn't.

So I am stuck with a BeThere 6Mb/s connection - better than many - but not as fast as what I should now be able to have on our exchange.
