File suffixes: Who needs them? Well, this guy did

Been there, done that, it never ends

Re: extensions and version numbers

Working in a plastics plant with an ancient VAX/VMS system that one day stopped doing what it was supposed to do. Guy who regularly supported it was on vacation so I volunteered to take a look. Found a file that some process updated daily, so getting a new version numbered file daily. It finally hit the maximum version number (65535?), and blew up when trying to save a new version of the file.

Both outlets may be switched by default. I had that in my condo, built in 1998. However, there is a strip between the two outlets that may be cut. That leaves one outlet switched and one permanently powered.

Re: Not just dates get confused

Years ago, running the web infrastructure for a small company, I was asked to go through the web logs looking for entries requesting certain URLs in a specified date and time range. I was told the request was from a national law enforcement organization and not much else. I kept my logs in UTC as I was not going to deal with time changes twice a year screwing up the entries.

My first question was what time zone the specified time range was in. It took several days to get that clarified so I could search appropriately.

Smartwatch owners love their calorie-counting gadgets, but they are verrry expensive

No batteries needed

Over the past few years I've migrated to mechanical watches only. Preferably automatics. I got tired of quartz watches that required battery changes too often and the Pebble watch I tried just didn't do anything for me. So I am currently wearing my favorite watch, a 20 year old Breitling that will probably outlast me. It shows me the day of the week, date, time and is also a chronograph. That's what I want in a watch.

Beardy biologist's withering takedown of creationism fetches $564,500 at auction

math is hard

A first-edition copy of history's most influential takedown of creationism has sold for $564,500 at auction, the highest amount yet for the tome.

...

The winning bid more than doubled the presale estimate of $120,000-$180,000 and Mellon's collection as a whole raked in $1.9m during the auction on 5 November.

Last time I checked, $564,500 more than tripled a number in the range $120,000-$180,000. So, yes it more than doubled it, but more than tripled it would be more accurate.

Re: Lesson from the early 1980s

Back around 1969/70, when I was in High School, we had an IBM system that had a program we could feed a set of musical notes to (encoded on cards) and place a radio on the console to hear the resulting tune. Since the school only got equipment that was out of date, I suspect this goes back a few years prior to that.

New PayPal T&Cs prevents sellers trash-talking PayPal

Been there, done that, it never ends

My experience with using PayPal via "friends and family" instead of as a commercial transaction is that the sender of funds pays the fee for "friends and family" while the receiver pays the fee for a commercial transaction. So, if asked to send funds as "friends and family", be sure to determine the fee and negotiate for reducing payment to account for it.

Cache-astrophic: Why Valve's Steam store spewed players' private profiles to strangers

Been there, done that, it never ends

Why mention Akamai?

Interesting to read the explanation. What is the reason for pointing out the CDN? I would expect that Steam is responsible for setting their caching profiles. If they get it wrong it's not the fault of the downstream content delivery system. In a previous position, I was always leery when the applications team wanted to control caching. They never seemed to understand the possible drawbacks and only looked at advantages.
