Seagate intros Innov8: A USB-powered 8TB external hard drive

Chill Out Peple

For crying out loud how about some perspective here people? Has anyone ever used one of those drives with two USB ports, one for power? They're terrible! Having a small internal battery sounds like quite a useful feature for portable drives. The fact that no one has done this before just means that Seagate has done something quite wonderful. "Obvious" would probably lead one to the conclusion that all disk manufacturers don't understand their markets. A better analysis is that these manufacturers do not want to spend an extra penny for something useful to their customers!

Now maybe we'll see some high performance large drives that can be used simply on a bunch of systems with tiny internal disks. Presently most of them!

Congratulations Seagate!

'SHUT THE F**K UP!' The moment Linus Torvalds ruined a dev's year

Software development isn't for wimps. I'm sure that Linus had had some very bad words for himself when he messed up some "important" code. Have engineers and programmers aver actually been normal human beings and expected to be treated thusly? I might be wrong but I rather put us in another class of beings and don't expect politeness and management professionalism as being quite so important. I'm done with software management now since I'm retired. However, I still both wince and expound quite vociferously at some of my own code. I only hope that others code is somewhat worse than mine...

UK shamed in high-speed broadband study

Being from the US I found this figure to be of interest... "The overall average (presumably the arithmetic "mean,") broadband access speed for the United States as a whole in the fourth quarter of 2010 was 5.1 Mbps, according to Akamai." It seems that we're lacking in more than one type of infrastructure in the US.
