Waiting for 100 Mbps NBN on wireless? Errr, umm, sorry about that

BlackKnight(markb)

Re: Labor's speed tiers bite again

https://www.itnews.com.au/news/nbn-co-says-one-in-four-fttn-lines-can-go-over-100mbps-481152

so in january NBN co expect 25% of FTTN Premise to be 100mbps capable FTTN which is the majority technology now. maybe people arent paying for 100mbps because they cant get it.

I mean its not like the ACCC has recently been fining RSPs for charging people for services they couldnt possibly provide over the NBN.

BlackKnight(markb)

Re: They got 100Mbps wireless in Iceland (country)

The Australian continent is the size of the USA, with 21 million people.

NBNco is being run like a business and the profit calculation essentially say no to rural Australians.

The NBN was originally concieved by Labour, with the concept being everyone pays a flat rate large city consumers that were cheaper to connect would effectively subsidise rollout to less profitable areas. they were never promised 100mbps by labour just a 25/5 service which would be better then most were use to.(people can argue away the effectiveness of the idea but that was the goal)

Liberals got in, with the philosphy of kill it, or if we cant, run it like telstra. BS.d there way in with performance and cost saving numbers that were unrealistic and this is the result.

BlackKnight(markb)

Re: Right adjective; wrong noun

The NBN was a brilliant Idea, initially poorly executed and then effectively sabotaged.

should have just given telstra money to go build instead of now giving them more money to fix there decrept copper.

Telstra drops nbn™ in it as it wears compo for broadband speed ads

BlackKnight(markb)

NBN started with a FTTP to 95% of the population, new govt chose to redesign it mid rollout to stop all Brownfield FTTP and reutilise the copper to save money (the very crappy copper).

NBN FTTN is a VDSL2 service over copper or HFC both designs deployed fixed wireless and satelite to regional ares

1 difficult to do mostly a problem because consumers arent paying for the 50 - 100mbps speed tiers

2 Telstra is basically doing this already

3 this would require the current pm and previous communications minister (mal turnbul) to admit he was wrong.... it would also be a huge cost to go back out to all FTTN sites and roll out FTTP instead.

4 nothing changes because our pollies have spent the last 10 years playing "thats not a knife" (howard was the last full PM to actually serve his full term)

followed by

"were not making a profit because no residential users pay for the premium speeds"

Heres a tip for new players, if you want people to pay for premium speeds and service, the infrastructure you design must support it first, retailers also have to be able to afford it, but again those are just pesky details.

im opting for 25mbps, because the FTTN installed on a 1.2km path that (because they stuck the node 600m from the nearest point connection point which is 600m from the house, to save money) i can only sync at 25mbps why would i pay for 100mbps service?

when i was blessed with FTTP, I opted to go a bit faster.

If you live in a network lab, you'll get gigabit NBN over HFC soon

BlackKnight(markb)

Speed teirs made sense with FTTP, because NBN could gaurentee, from client to NBN infrastructre a connection at that requested speed.

With the MTM model. anyone on this HFC crap and FTTN gets what there given. however you can still sign up for 100/40 even if your line only gets 20. theres plenty of rats out there that will take people for a ride.

Department of Human Services says citizens, not systems, to blame

BlackKnight(markb)

IT in canberra isnt that cheap.

Sure, we could replace FTNN, says nbn™, if you let the unwired wait even longer for broadband

BlackKnight(markb)
FAIL

“If we were to do this, to put it quite simply, we would have to tell residents in several million premises that were scheduled to get nbn services over the next 18 months via FTTN that they would not now be getting connected for another two to three years as we’d have to re-start the entire design, planning and construction process.”

This also applied to the decision to drop FTTP for FTTN when the libs took over, and guess what, everything got pushed back 12-18months. so really his talking from experience. apparently going back to the drawing board means faster cheaper deployment.

RE: copper replacement

"VDSL (about 100 Mb unbonded at 500 meters over an unimpaired line)" thats the paper standard, thats not what im getting and im 515m from the node, Sync speed down between 40-45 and 20-25 up. Im also on a small node servicing around 100 premise, many other nodes seem to be doing 300 + premise.

I was authorized to trash my employer's network, sysadmin tells court

BlackKnight(markb)

even a basic Change managment policy effectively negates his arguement (doesnt sound like one existed here). as he would have undertaken an unapproved change and thus unauthorised access to the system.

of course. it would be possible for someone to game a basic change system depending on the culture and get "approval" for this "work" which would be amusing to then see argued in court that it was unauthorised.

As South Australia blacked out, PM's office was told renewable power was not to blame

BlackKnight(markb)

the Grid relies on Base load power that can be turned up and down at will. currently solar and wind cant provide this. Hydro can but limited locations to build it. someone was exploring ocean\wave power generation but this isnt commerical yet.

If the current requirement for environmental protection is lowering CO2 then Nuclear reactor provide the base load requirement and cut CO2 emssions. Nuclear power technolog has come a long way and as discussed earlier in the thread. multiple reactor can be planned to feed the "waste" from one reactor to the next.

Australia has a Boringly stable contienent in terms of geological and weather we dont get tsunami's or severe earthquakes. were also under populated for our size, so building reactors, 30kms away from urban enviroments is easy.

Building Nuclear reactors now would be a gaurentee drop in emissions, and provide new generates to replace our current apparently failing ones (NSW and Victoria ) but old predjudices just dont seem to die.

BlackKnight(markb)

So the recent almost blackout that occured in NSW when multiple gas and coal plant failed to deliver there capacity and where they threatend to start blacking out victoria. but instead survived by risking damage to the smelting plant. Was that the fault of the coal\gas technology. or was that the fault of the policies governing power generation\supply in australia. you know the same thing SA is blaming when the base load gas plant failed to deliver the gap as it was suppose to....

BlackKnight(markb)

it would be nice If

The government (as a whole) got off their collective butts, actually started inovating a solution and providing energy companies with some stability so they could invest money in given infrastructure.

SA's Second blackout occured with a gas power plant standing idle despite requests for power from it. as has been correctly pointed out, renewables need reliable base load generation. This failure was one of process and governance not technological.

This politcal football with Australias infrastructure is getting old, Roads, Telecommunications, Power.

Im yet to work in an enviroment that actually has a test enviroment for the comms guys.

app developers, servers sure. but all comms equipement I've ever touched has been "live".

Makes "testing" difficult. and of course with a config change like that you need realistic load to test with.

This also sounds like one of those standard changes that gets done multiple times a day and more or less waved through change management. and the "lower being" probably verified by making sure the line looks like his doco then went to the next job, and would have been the last to find out it had gone TITSUP.

Re: Nutters

Indicated air speed makes sense.

Ground speed dictates your trip time

Airspeed dicates the lift generated from the wings.

IE if your stall speed is 60kn and you have a 10 kn tail wind you would need a ground speed of 60 to not fall out of the sky. as wind direction and speed constantly changing its easier just to remember 60 on the airspeed indicator and aim for that.

"Guns don't jump off the shelf and shoot people by themselves"

True, But a person is hard pressed to Fire a gun if they do not posses one,.

"Chicago has very strict control laws" - assuming for a moment thats true, how effective is that really, when you can drive accross to the next state and buy a gun off someone from craigslist. really... gun control needs to be set and enforced at the federal level.

Gun control = limiting firearms to those that A require it and B have been formerly trained in the safe use and storage. sport shooters, hunters, licensed armed security gaurds, famers, police in australia are all permitted to own a gun. as a currently unarmed civillian that has fired rifles down a range, all i need to do is join a gun club, pass the police check showing im not a complete psycho and off I go. it does however mean that people previously convicted of violent crimes cant just sign up, walk into a gun shop, then have another crack at GTA live.

cleaned up many a comms room thats looked like those photos. take a simple switch stack replacement add on 4 hours of repatching and cable management being carful to reconnect every connection only to come back a week later to see half a dozen 5-10m cables hanging down the front again. Then there was the time a colleague went into a comms room, day after he'd finished a replacement to see a single 10 meter cable just hanging down the front for a 1 meter patch.. the phrase that were uttered that day and immortalised in email were hilarious.

The excuse was always "but we didnt have any" our answer, "come and see us, we have draws full" We would always leave behind a box of appropriately sized cables but still get these 10 meter monsters for the shortest patch possible.

NBN cost blows out by at least AU$10bn and FTTN isn't launched yet

BlackKnight(markb)
Mushroom

they killed it

unfortunately the libs have effectively killed off the FTTP solution until there MTM\FTTN solution is built. the sad fact is they've blown so much money changing the solution after the start of implementation that no one will be able to justify the cost of swapping back again.

At best, for areas that construction has not started, a new labor government may deploy FTTP to those areas. more likley they'll play political football with it for election points as they get to use the LIberals killed the nbn slogans.

this will now be down to NBN justifying the costs of future upgrades to its primary stake holder in the future. best bet, if you want FTTP build a new home the only way to dodge this debacle.
