EE roaming outage hits Brits basking abroad

LarsG

They have no idea

I use BT Mobile, have not had a signal since yesterday here in the Channel Islands around 10am, EE finally admits there is a problem this afternoon and they have no idea how to fix it except to say switch airplane mode on and off. IDIOTS RUN BY IDIOTS MANAGED BY PLONKERS. Problem is EU wide but they keep saying 'some people' might have problems!

Goodbye Vulcan: Blighty's nuclear bomber retires for the last time

Re: A beautiful aircraft though

In the 70's I lived at RAF Scampton in Lincs and regularly saw flights of three taking off on exercise over my house. The noise was phenomenal, the whole house shook the windows were almost at breaking point. The only thing that came close to this spectacle was watching Phantoms taking off at night with full afterburner from my bedroom. I have been up close to them, been inside and sat on the seats all courtesy of my dad. Happy days.

Re: What am I missing?

I like the fact that I have to adjust the time once or twice a month with my Sinn U2 auto winder, nothing to do with Bono here, I can relax in the knowledge that it needs no recharging or batteries and that if I fall overboard and drown in 2000 meters of water it will still be working. It's pretty much indestructible and you can beat a mugger to death with it if they try and rob you. Ok so it's over engineered but if regularly serviced I expect one of my great great great great great grandchildren will probably have it on their wrist in say 240 years time. Smart watches on the other hand will be confined to a foot note in history just like the 3D tv's they hyped on about.

Really? A highly evolved experience?

If you find it sexy, interesting and fun? Maybe the socially inept might get a kick out of it.

Re: No EU, less cover

However, the hardest thing is to actually convince the retailer you are trying to get money off, or return an item to, that you actually know your consumer rights.

Then there is the small problem of the retailer actually knowing what his obligation to you is. Even with my Law degree I have spent many a time pointing out my rights to a blank expression.

For instance I returned a chocolate dessert to Tesco the day after I opened it, tasted it and found the cream had gone off. Returning to the shop I was asked for the receipt which I did not have and asked to prove I bought the product from Tesco. Incidentally it was branded as a Tesco product on the label.

Then I was told I could not return it without the receipt, rubbish! After few minutes my demand to see a manager coerced them into giving me a refund, 99p.

Incidentally I returned a JVC TV to Comet, had it 1 month and the repair man had called 3 times and put the wrong part into it. Still didn't work. True!

Comet policy was to repair and not refund until I took direct action and took the thing back to the Comet store and left it on the floor between the two automatic doors sat on it and told every customer who went in not to buy a TV from Comet.

The manager was very sympathetic when I told him my woes, to get rid of me he swapped the JVC for a new Sony.

Really... an iKeyfob? Apple continues war on fanbois' pockets

LarsG

I have keyless entry on a Ford Focus.

To open the car I put my hand on the door handle.

To lock the doors I touch the door handle lightly with my hand/thumb/finger.

To start the car I sit in it and press a button.

I can program it to open just one door or all the doors.

I can lock all the doors when inside by pressing one button.

How on earth would I save any more time? Perhaps a micro second of a micro second?

Start the car perhaps while I am walking towards it? Waste of fuel.

If I lose the key fob I still have my phone to call for help.

If I lose my phone I can still drive home.

If only they came up with some kind of iTraffic management that when activated moved every other car on the road out of the way, now that would be something.

"Our study has found there is absolutely no correlation between the increase in air rage violence over the past six months and the unlimited use of mobile phones on aircraft.

We have also found no evidence related to mobile phone use during air travel and the increase in surgery to remove mobile phones from the rectum.

With regards to the number of passengers randomly falling from the sky, there is no evidence to suggest it is anything but suicide and it is coincidental that a mobile phone was found next to the body in every instance."

'I'm in the market for a SIM free, unlocked phone that gets updates directly from the manufacturer.'

You've not heard about the iPhone then?

You can even buy then Sim free is you want.

I buy the phone, yes it is expensive but I change the phone every year, selling the old one which has superb resale value. I get at least 60% of the original outlay back especially as the phone is looked after and in nearly new condition.

The Sim only deal I have costs me less than £250 a year.

No having to wait two years to upgrade and all updates are on time and free. Add the cost of the phone into the equation I save a fair bit of money in the long term.

Facebook, Google and Instagram 'worse than drugs' says Miley Cyrus

Most performers want adoration, swarms of fans and people to keep telling them how wonderful they are.

Unfortunately if honesty were to prevail we may comment on their drug use, the poor choice of outfit at the awards ceremony, their bad behaviour, the drink driving ban, being caught with a prostitute in a car, racist remarks being made etc etc etc.

In the real world life is different to the bubble most of these performers live in.

Germany

Germany is regulated to the n'th degree. Everything has a rule. Having lived in the country for a great many years rules include,

No hanging washing out on a Sunday

Mowing the lawn to be undertaken not after certain times, not on Sundays

No barbecues on balconies

Dogs are not allowed to bark after 9pm (sign on farming village notice board)

No car washing outside your house, only in designated car washes (Kries Holzminden)

Fail the driving test 3 times you will have to attend the 'idiots school'

Winter tyres compulsory on a specific date in October

A fine if you shout at, abuse or stick your fingers up to another motorist

Recycling inspectors look in bins

Weed killer banned

You are responsible for the pavement (snow) outside your house

Every aspect of life has a rule so you know exactly where you stand, not only do the police enforce these rules but your neighbours will willingly tell on you 'Anzeigen' or report you to the authorities. It's in their DNA and psyche.

The Germans will eventually allow the app, but only when they have thoroughly legislated for it.

Just been on holiday for a week. When you are on an all inclusive it is criminal not to get your money's worth of food during breakfast.

My usual breakfast of porridge was substituted for a full cooked extreme breakfast every day.

4 rashers of bacon

3 sausages

3 eggs

2 Hash browns ( American addition)

1 ladle of Beans

4 grilled half tomatoes

2 halves fried bread

4 toasts

2 ladles of mushrooms

1 black pudding

Tea

I have no idea what the calorific value of this was over 7 days but I felt I had value for money.

It is a relief to be back on porridge.

I had a similar experience with Dell, 2 years 4 days ( extended 2 year warranty ) screen went black GeForce card died though overheating. Incidentally, they brought out a bios update that made the fan work harder.

What I didn't realise was in the USA this was a known problem and some people had the card replaced out of Dell even if it was out of warranty.

Anyway Dell said tough luck to me so I bought a new model of the XPS. This time it was the software, it never liked the hardware. Reboot, reboot, reboot... Even worse, it just didn't like 3rd party software.
