Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon X chip targets $600 Copilot+ PCs

They are specially mentioning VPN clients because that used to be one area where compatibility was broken with some odd clients.

Standard Windows desktop is already pretty much perfectly usable on ARM, the issue with Snapdragon X for me is actually Linux compatibility.

Qualcomm's Windows on Arm push would be great – if only it ran all your software

well, it DOES run all my software except for games

All the software that I use on a non-gaming PC works on my Snapdragon X Plus based Surface Pro 11 with no issues at all. Don't know how the previous generations performed, but the current one is pretty much indistinguishable from x86 PCs. At least for general "office" use, browsing, media consumption etc. And the one time I was lazy and used Shotcut to edit a video on that thing, the exporting speed was pretty much the same as on my big i9 desktop. Intel & AMD have a reason to be scared.

Re: It says it will go for a "fit to standard" principle

right, that's why they have a specific public-sector module

Intel NUCs find fresh life in Asus, but rights are 'non-exclusive'

Re: Noisy fans

you can get a fanless Akasa case for most NUCs, or really just pick a fanless mini PC like the ASUS PN42 with a N100 (6W TDP) which will blow your Pi out of the water...

Re: Nuc-Nuc

not sure if the 10% markup over Chinese no-name crap like Minisforum/Beelink (which randomly shut down due to overheating and shitty power supplies) can be really considered "overpriced"... NUCs are just rock solid and people (and enterprises) are more than willing to pay for the quality and the peace of mind

Re: Small Edge compute clusters are ideal fodder for ARM already

ARM SBCs that have enough CPU/GPU power, memory, 1Gbps LAN and a M.2 NVMe slot are actually more expensive than a basic i3 NUC and come nowhere near in terms of performance.

fb2k

realy? comparing Aliexpress trash like Minisforum to NUCs? When did Intel ship NUCs with liquid metal sprayed all over the motherboard, when did NUCs randomly shut down under load due to abysmal thermals?

In terms of engineering and attention to detail, it's a world of difference between these two manufacturers.

Bosses face losing 'key' workers after forcing a return to office

Re: For a contrarian take

I "work" in the office 1 day in month. "work", because I can't get anything done while in the office. Nobody does. People just stand around and chat, waste half an hour every 2 hours on a coffee break etc. Luckily nobody expects us to work from the office, so it's basically just a place to hang around. Real work gets done at home.

Your next PC should be a desktop – maybe even this Chinese mini machine

the latest i3 NUC costs $350, a Celeron/Pentium NUC around $190 ....why even bother with a no-name Chinese Celeron board for $300?

I take it OpenVPN with Pihole running at home will still work.

Re: Not the same.

might as well just buy an i3 NUC for $250
