True cost

And this is the true damage of terrorism. Not buildings, not even the immediate loss of life. The damage to relationships between people.

Have to say I've been pretty happy with the VM broadband for the last few years. Started out on 20mbit and now on 120mbit for "no extra charge" (yeah, right). Still it's a lot better performance than what BT can provide - They phone me occasionally to tell me about the wonderful Infinity box until I tell them I'm on 120mbit fibre.

I'll be moving house this year, and at that point, if I can get VM I'll definitely go for the broadband, but not the TV, it's pretty shite. The phone is probably no more expensive than anyone else's,but has the added disadvantage of going out with the power. Might just stick with mobile for that.

we had an outage yesterday - first one for a long while - and the CS people were fine. Took the time to check my circuit, though I'd already done that on the mobile, and confirmed the fault. Was fixed within an hour.

VCs drop cash on DropBox, bestow $10bn valuation

The thing with Dropbox is, to coin a phrase, it just works. Install it, stick something in the Public folder. right-click it and you can share the public link. the recipient doesn't need a Dropbox account.

With Google drive you can share something to Google Plus, and that's about it without involving sending email and other shenanigans.

Haven't tried Box but once.. wasn't impressed with the speed of sync.

Can't the victims use the DMCA because if they took the pic, then it's their copyright and can't be reproduced without permission.

I've seen another story in a similar vein today. If Disney can make Youtube take stuff down why can't anyone else use the same tactics? Refusal to comply leaves the guy open to suit for copyright infringement, surely?

Reg man inhales the smooth, non-cancerous, taste of USB nicotine

Bgfreeman

Re: One point that is often conveniently forgotten ...

Anyone who says they 'feel the effects" of nicotine in exhaled vapour is delusional or suffering from psychosomatic symptoms.

Nicotine is absorbed extremely fast and E-cigs deliver it less efficiently than cigarettes (something to do with particle size) so the quantity of Nicotine in exhaled vapour is effectively nil.

Ever had to register to buy online - and been PELTED with SPAM?

Bgfreeman

If there's no valid reason for the company to have my email address, they don't get it.

So, if they're not going to send me an email confirmation for a product, or shipping notes etc, they get fake@email.com as the address, or x@y.com both of which usually pass whatever sad excuse they've got for checking.

Otherwise, yes, use a throwaway.

Deadly pussies kill more often than owners think

As Mr. Pratchett puts it:

If cats were shaped like frogs, we'd see what nasty, spiteful creatures they really are"

Yes, cats kill stuff. That's what they do, and yes they crap anywhere that other crap has been. Boo hoo.

I'd still rather have cats than mice,v oles and corrosive-shit birds around my house.

Virgin Media broadband in two-day wobble

Bgfreeman

Can't find anything say whether this is Virgin's ADSL (poo) or cable broadband.

We had slowdowns and 404's on Saturday and Sunday for some US sites and we're on cable.

I'm guessing a router somewhere playing up, or maybe a DNS server.
