New Oyster online service goes live at TfL

Cool, now every time I use the DLR I can see how much I have or haven't been charged.

I think the down votes on the comments complaining about the people who take forever at ticket barriers are the London tourists. After a month in London, even the mildest meek from quietsvilles in shyland turns into the "I'm too important for these chumps" Londoner. Miss a train by a second and you have to wait THREE MINUTES FOR THE NEXT ONE - THIS IS RIDICULOUS...

They should add a breakdown of what each error code means as well. Seek assistance - and interrupt the endless coffee break of TfL staff all huddled together who can see you have a problem but would rather watch the chaos ensue behind.

But in all fairness - I'm 7 months into London and it surprises me still that the amount of people that gets around the capital at a fairly quick pace.

Nokia: 'hybrid' mobiles will save us

adamgarretty

Nokia doesn't know what company it is. They can't emulate Apple or HTC - that ship as sailed.

But If I wanted a handset that was basic but tough with an easy to use UI then I naturally turn my attention to Nokia just from rep alone. I'm sure there is a market for that. For older friends and family who wanted a new handset to replace their circa 1998 hand-me-downs.

iTunes fanbois outraged by Apple's sex-life quiz probe

The older I get the less sympathy I have for people who continue to use products that aren't suited to them. Don't like iTunes or Facebook? Well, stop using them because it's the only way companies learn.

Usability is rarely tested, we adapt to how the device works instead. I'm a sucker for it too but it's amazing how easy it is to stop using something if you shorten your fuse and decide to just stop using them - I just adapt like I did before.

US rent-a-room biz swallows Blighty's Crashpadder

I am on both. Airbnb does give you peace of mind with their insurance. It's a risk but since we are living in same property and it's the guest room renting out then it's not so bad. I've also hosted and have couchsurfed which has produced the most weirdos. On both sides of hosting and surfing I have cancelled because their messages or profiles all of a sudden don't sit right with you. I do hate giving bad reviews though but I would say they only come around at about 1 in 20 occasions. Now think about the last 20 hotels you stayed at and I bet there is more than 1 bad review among them.

Most people are polite, respectful and treat it 1000 times better than they would a hotel room. For the hostee, they get local knowledge the host make use out of a spare bit of space.

PayPal to move into the shop - without cards or NFC

Thumb Up

First time poster, long time reader.

What this is good for, is small businesses like me. I've longed for an app or similar in the UK where I can take card payments while out and about or have my Cash On Delivery option also be a Card/Cash On Delivery.

As for the security behind it, it is open to fraud but as a business you pay paypal a fairly large cut that if there is any problems they cover the costs of it and generally sort it. The old banking model doesn't work for a lot of new innovation, saying "the new boy thinks he can solve it blah blah blah" still has small businesses looking else where and willing to take a chance to make their business work. Hopefully banks will go the way of the music industry, get caught sleeping about new innovation, miss the train and go out of business.
