I have the misfortune to have a friend who switched to MAC and it's been nothing but a headache ever since he let it upgrade to Lion! The most infuriating issue on the list being the inability of the MAC to keep the WiFi connection alive!

I say "I" have the misfortune to have ... because I've moved from support his PC, which I knew inside out, to supporting his MAC which does things in weird illogical ways...

Parallel import argument turns toxic in Oz

Get a mate to download it and email it to you!?! There are always ways to circumvent this manufacturer bullshit (in fact, it's not really the manufacturers - as borne out by the fact that a purchase in Japan gives you a worldwide warranty - it's the regional exclusivity agreements that the distributors have with the manufacturers).

Have I got News For You?

Yes, I have.

It's not just Australia! It's everywhere the governments let them get away with it (which is pretty much everywhere in the "western" world) due to the level of vested interest of the AHs in power.

Driver mystery

I'm still amazed at how windows can still come up with "unknown" device detected and not give you any sort of clue as to what type of device it's suddenly discovered (when you haven't installed any new hardware recently) that would give you a clue as to exactly which bit of "unknown hardware" has probably just developed corrupted drivers or gone titsup - thereby enabling you to specifically re-install those drivers or order the replacement part.

I also still don't get how linux can tell you exactly what you have just slotted in (usually including the firmware version etc.) when windows quite often doesn't seem to be able to even tell you what type of device has just been inserted!?!

Of course, I still use windows as well, as I have some rather expensive software which only runs on windows :-(

Microsoft becoming Apple with Windows 8 control freakery?

Steve Renouf

Missing the point?

I think maybe, you're missing the point - it's been about being able to build a PC to your own specification from the widely available components available in any combination/flavour you like - not about what the "assembly companies" want to supply you with as a finished product. It's THAT freedom that's in danger...

Ermmm... They can't actually stop you from buying one

"ThinkPad buffs can take a look at the ThinkPad X120e's specifications here, and dream whistfully about what they'd do with the machine if Lenovo would only let them buy one... ®"

Ermmm... They can't actually stop you from buying one, they can only stop it getting to you through the normal channels. If you happen to be in a country where they are sold and you buy one there, it is yours - it belongs to you - to do with whatever you wish - including taking it back home with you. Oh look! See! You can buy one!

Apples/Oranges?

The connection between your PC and your ISP's server may well be 20Mbs but was the throughput 20Mbs - I very much doubt it. By the time ISPs have finished traffic shaping, throttling this service and that service, what you often end up with is an actual data throughput figure which is way below the connection speed.

The UK doesn't include the IOM and the Channel Islands. The Channel Islands have never been part of the United Kingdom (which comprises: Scotland, England, Wales & Northern Ireland). They are, however, part of the "British Islands". That's why our passports do not mention the UK anywhere. It is: "British Islands: Bailiwick of Jersey" (or Guernsey, as the case may be).

"Invitation to Treat"

Just because a store has items for sale does NOT mean they HAVE TO sell it to you. The contract of sale only takes place once the AGREEMENT of both parties has been reached - i.e. the purchaser agrees to buy the goods and the seller agrees to sell the goods at an agreed price and including any other conditions attached to the contract (by either party) have likewise been agreed by both parties.
