I have deleted all things Google from my system. This includes Maps and Waze on my iOS devices. This includes DNS, on all systems where I can easily change DNS.

I have, of course, deleted Chrome and all of the crap installed with it.

Good-bye, Google. I won't say that it's been fun, because it hasn't.

Hmm. I'm typing this using Firefox on a Win 10 system. I have _never_ seen the message "something went wrong and we had to reset your default browser", not even once. This particular machine started as a Win 7 system (and still has Win 7 in another partition) and was 'updated' to Win 8 (there's a reason why the Win 7 partition is there) and Win 8 to 8.1, which was semi-usable but I kept the Win 7 partition, and Win 8.1 to Win 10... and it's been the better part of a year since I've booted the Win 7 partition, and that last time was merely to update the various Microsoft patches on the partition. It took a weekend, which is one reason why I've not booted Win 7 since. It may be heresy to some, but Win 10 is not merely better than Win 8/8.1 (not at all difficult), but is at least as good as Win 7 in most ways, and sometimes is actually better. It boots faster, on the same hardware, than Win 7 does. Yes. Really. (Warning! Danger, Will Robinson, danger! Many downvotes inbound at Mach 6!)

I use Edge only to visit Microsoft sites. The Win 8 partition started as a clone of the Win 7 partition, and I did an update install of Win 8, followed by an update install of Win 8.1, followed by an update install of Win 10. Firefox was the default browser on the Win 7 partition. I had to slap the Win 8 install to make it admit that Firefox was the default browser, but the Win 8.1 and 10 installs behaved.

ummm... how are they enforcing this? If it's a satcom, and the antennas and all the other hardware on the aircraft or in orbit, then the aircraft can transmit without anyone on the ground even knowing. People on the ground would be able to receive the signal but would have no idea which, if any, of the aircraft in the sat signal's footprint is the intended recipient, especially if the signal was encrypted. A LEO satcom would have a footprint big enough to cover all of China plus some adjacent countries (northern Vietnam, Japan, the Koreas, Mongolia, parts of Russia, Nepal, Bhutan, parts of India...) and a MEO would cover most of east Asia. A GEO would cover just less than half the planet...

Never mind enforcing. How would they _detect_ this?

Here in Deepest South Florida, some good ol' boyz once put styrofoam and cardboard in place of steel and concrete on the off-ramp from I-95 to Palm Beach 'International' (it is to laugh; with the exception of propeller-driven puddle-jumpers going to and coming back from the Bahamas and, during snowbird season, far too many Air Canaduh flights bringing in far too many Quebecois, all regularly scheduled flights at PBIA are to and from other places in the US...) Ah... no. Here in Deepest South Florida it is _very_ common for cops to take their vehicles home with them. One local housing development I know of has, on one road ('Azalea Circle') at least three Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputies, one each Miami-Dade and Broward County Sheriff's Deputy, and one each West Palm Beach, Royal Palm Beach, Boynton Beach, and Ft. Lauderdale police officers, plus one Florida Highway Patrol, one Florida Fish and Wildlife, and one Federal Border Patrol cop. Those would just be the marked cars. There are also several cars with yellow 'state', 'county', and 'city' and white US Gov license plates, but those might not be cops, just civil servants. Two of the PBCS deputies live next door to each other. The Ft. Lauderdale cop and the Broward deputy live opposite to each other. Two of the US Gov plated cars are parked by houses on the same block as the Border Patrol cop. No doubt there are lots of unmarked cars which don't have yellow plates.

Depending on which version of Office365 to decide to be victimized by, it's $70 to $150 a year. Every year. They also have relatives in the Caribbean and Africa, thanks to the Raj trying and failing to import strike-breakers (there’s a _reason_ why there are so many Indians in Guyana, Trinidad, Jamaica...) and have commercial ties. They’d need civil-grade GPS, world-wide, for that. Geosynchronous is harder to do than LEO.

Here in Deepest South Florida, just about all plans from just about all the major carriers feature unlimited texts. Data is a whole other thing. My T-Mobile plan gives me unlimited voice/texts in the US Canada, and (wall or no wall) Mexico. (T-Mob’s color is pink, not orange...) There is ‘unlimited’ data, but it slows to 3g after I use 5 GB/month. And tethering is 3G unless I pay extra, which I don’t. I haven’t had to pay for texts for the better part of a decade.

If someone goes to the trouble of geoblocking specifically to avoid having to deal with GDPR, then why on God's green Earth are you going to even more trouble to bypass the geoblocking? Why not just go to a site which complies instead? Why go to the trouble of using a VPN to evade the geoblock when it was clear from the start that your presence was not desired? Is there seriously no other site in the world which can provide the required service? Seriously? There are many sites which have been blocking access to those who run adblockers for a long time now (Forbes, Business Insider, I'm thinking of _you_) and I simply go elsewhere. Back in the day

i had a job running a large SCADA system. It controlled multiple remote sites. We were an electric utility, we had to control the various substations from System Control, 24/7. It was very secure, mostly by accident. We used Harris H800 24-bit (you read that correctly, 24-bit, they only cost half a million each...) supermini computers and communicated to the substations using powerline carrier over transmission lines. If anyone wanted to hack us, they had to either get into computer room at System Control, past the locked door. The locked doors, actually, the door to the computer room was locked and the door to building was locked. We had crashbars on the doors, you could always get out, but to get in either you had a key or someone inside IDed you using the camera outside the door and buzzed you in. And there was an armed guard at the gate to the property. We had _great_ physical security. Or they had to climb a utility pole and play with 138,000 volts at 100 to 200 amps. Good luck with that. None of our signals went over PSTN. A would-be hacker _could_ break into a substation (climb the fence or get a copy of the substation gate key and then break into the substation's control room... and he'd have control of that substation, nothing more. If he could figure out how to send the correct commands. If he survived playing with multiple 138 and 24 kV systems. And System Control would spot the problem almost immediately and send some linemen out to have a look.

I suppose that it was security by obscurity, but 138 kV at 100 amps makes for excellent security. Our heroes here might well have been able to pwn the system, if only they could touch it without being fried.

It'd have been different if we were dealing with something less rambunctious than 138 kV, but no, we were hackproof. My fav example was the time that a quarter million worth of truck tires vanished from the Stores inventory. It was pretty clear who had liberated them, but as there was no record of their ever having been company property, not any more, there wasn't much which could be done. At least not up until the time I left the company, about two years later.

The places I use Windows most often are my ancient laptop and a VM running on one of my Macs. The laptop got ‘upgraded’ to 1803 very early on. I didn’t want it to be ‘upgraded’, but Redmond insisted. The VM, which I _wanted_ to be ‘upgraded’ to test the bloody thing, is still at 1709. In fact, just about the only Win10 installs around here, not just the ones I use a lot, which have _not_ been ‘upgraded’ to 1803 are running in VMs. Gee. What a coincidence. At least one VM is still running 1607. Hmm. Now, it’s true that I have taken to controlling the Internet access on Win10 VMs, but the bloody things don’t ‘upgrade’ even when Internet access is turned on. Hmmm.

I wonder why I’m just not feeling any Redmond love right now...
