Amazon accused of remotely wiping punter's Kindle

Apple has the same TOA.....

While we may not have all the facts of this specific individuals story, what is important to keep in mind is that Amazon is not the only corporation that has this kind of power written in thier Terms Of Agreement. Apple has the very same power to wipe all your content and cancel your account.

This is one of the biggest inherent problems with trusting all your content to these companies clouds. This is one of the reasons I created my own cloud. The technology is not as hard as most would think. The biggest joy is having control over my content and not relying/trusting these huge companies to manage your personal content in one-on-one personal approach.

I stream all my music/video content from my home server using Subsonic and also have file access using homeserver provided address.

Remember, You lose power/control when you give power/control to others. Don't be mad at them when _shit happens.....be mad at yourself for making that choice.

The start of a dying OS?

This kind of forced injection against the wishes of its users, is THE opportunity other Linux based distros have been waiting for and can take full advantage of.

Ubuntu users are NOT novices or the general public. They ARE quite capable of backing up their data, wiping the OS drive and installing a completely different OS. There are other choices available.

Makes you wonder who the Twit is that thought this would be a welcomed feature. Must have been a bean counter. Well the person who decided to implement the idea should be fired today.

Passengers DO NOT OWN the planes. Buy/Rent your own if you don't like the rules.

Regardless of what any individual believes, when asked by an employee of the airline to comply with a request, they must do so. If you don't like the idea of this....its simple. Buy or rent your own plane. When your actions/choices could affect the lives of many others...your self serving attitude does not take top priority.

The number of ignorant fools who think they are above established rules/expectations is growing exponentially.

Just wish there was a place we could send people like this guy. I'd like to see how they survive on their own and in their own society when they are responsible for themselves. I have a feeling chaos would ensue.

Re: I use MyCloud. It's actually my own large music colletion...no fees...no ads.

fyi. SubSonic will also run on your main desktop if you don't yet have a home server. It will work with Macs, PCs, etc.

You may be interested in what it takes to have your own server. It's really not that difficult and an old pc will do the job just fine. There are some free server OS options, but you can buy MS WHS2011 for around 50.00 and you get a web address with no annual fees.

I've got an Atom powered ITX board, 2gigs Ram, 4T HD storage. It's been running 24/7 for over 3 years now and no failures (knock on wood). I do regular backups to an external drive as a safety backup.

one last note....SubSonic allows streaming of your videos in addition to your music collection.

It's just a pretty cool solution for people who prefer not to use Pandora like services.

GotThumbs

I use MyCloud. It's actually my own large music colletion...no fees...no ads.

Using SubSonic, I'm able to stream my own music collection (+20GIGs) to my phone (Android), tablet (Xoom), work computer or any other web connected device. I have a WHS at the house and run SubSonic service. Setup the Port and just go to my WHS site and add the specific port to the address. I can login through a browser or simply use the app to stream days of music. Any new music is simply added to the server and thus available to me anywhere.

I prefer not to use pandora due to ads and even though I have some decent local stations, the random play feature does the job for me.

No need to upload my music collection to some companies "Cloud" service. I just created my own cloud.

Re: By inference

"Land of the Free" is becoming more a more a pathetic joke within this nation's borders.

While I live in America, I've had the opportunity to travel quite a bit. I always chuckle to myself when I hear Americans brag and pump their chests that America is the freest nation, yet in truth, it is really one of the most restrictive. Rather than respect others choices....many wish to control the way other americans live and believe. They even try to dictate to those outside it borders...and yet it has millions who are poor and hungry within its borders. America has become a country without character and resolve. It relies more it its payouts to countries to buy friends/alliances. It's overwhelming transparent and cheapens the character of this once great nation. The UN is overrun by corruption and special interests...yet the US chooses to continue to play along as if there is nothing going on. Turning a blind eye to these kinds of issues will bring this country down even further in standing and respect. Sure other leaders smile and shake the hands of US Leaders, but don't fool yourselves into thinking it changes once they exit the room.

My key point is American needs to focus on cleaning its own house before thinking it knows what's best for other nations. Give them some credit, as America is one of the youngest nations and is heading towards another period of civil unrest due to "Redistribution" beliefs of its current leader.

I think this can be related to IT and any other postion/career.

The point is:

NEVER jeopardize your position/livelyhood for the benefit of someone else just to be nice. First reflect on whether the proposed actions would conflict with company policy first. The girl should really be mad at the employee and herself, not the owners. The employees are the ones who broke established company policy.

This is a lesson she should not forget anytime soon and it clearly communicates the company is serious about this policy.

The real question is.....how many ISheep are out there only to be counted in the popular group?

Seriously though,

The whole situation is kind of childish. If you want to own and IProduct and have the money...buy it. It's your choice to enter Apples walled garden. Just understand there are other individuals on this planet that will not be interested in owning one. There are many reasons for this...but they will be personal choices and should not be taken as an insult to your decision.

Just make sure you fully understand that Apple runs a closed ecosystem where you are helpless and restricted to their every whim. You do not even have the choice to shop for content from another market places. Android OS allows each individual owner to CHOOSE on their own.... if I want to allow downloads from other markets other than Google's market. There are at least six markets I can choose to purchase from.

You should also know that Apple also had 100% control/right to wipe all the content from any IProduct and any ITunes account at their discretion and you have zero input on that. It's in the ITunes agreement. You should read it.

If its wrong now...then it will be wrong two or five years from now. Apple is one of the biggest monopolies around. Try and get content for any IProduct without going through Apples store. You can't. Apple users will have zero options to shop from other less expensive vendors.

Google's Picasa web-albums works well and you can choose to use Google+ or not. Family and friends can still comment on each photo if you'd like that.

My questions is.......Why would you give the responsibility of your memories and data to anyone one else but you? Setup your own home server (I have WHS1) and you can store and display/share any number of your family photos using any number of free ad-ons. Just setup regular backups of the server as well. You can use a back-up service for your WHS or do your own and store your backup disks off-site.

There is even free server software you can get and use any old computer you have laying around.

With your own home-server...you can store all your families documents and digital content...and access it using any phone or tablet. Make your own Family Cloud.

Just think how important is this data to you....and how important is it to companies. Not everyone is a quick to give "Control" over to a company whose sole mission is profit.

Most of the kids today don't know what work is. They want to play and be entertained all the time. I know of two boys that play games most of the day and have mentioned more than once about being a game programmer. Yet both boys are barely passing school and seem headed towards a life of manual work and a lifetime of dependence on their parents. With the new US health bill allowing children up to 26 to remain on the parents healthcare....seems the US government just doesn't understand the idea of children growing up and being self-sufficient. Children want to be given jobs that they like and don't understand the reality of how life really is. The kids just want to have stuff done for them...since most mothers still treat their children like babies. I know, because I was married to a woman who was more interested in pleasing the boys every whim over being a responsible parent/adult and focus on raising a future responsible citizen. There's a time and place for work and play. Kids today don't get that...yet.

The reality is that no tablet will have the same fan-fare that the IPAD has garnished over the years. Apples REAL money maker. Hey when IProduct users only have one market to shop at....you are guaranteed to make loads of money.

What we will see in the coming years are products that provide greater functionality for thouse seeking something more than what Apple thinks you need. While Android has more of a learning curve than IOS, you gain many more choices that Apple allows you. With a full OS on a streamlined tablet...well you gain more functionality than IOS will evern provide. The only option for Apple is to add their OS onto a MacTablet.

MS has just taken matters into their own hands since many manufacturers have failed to provide the hardware many techies desire. Flash drives are of course the future. They existed before Apple integrated them into the Air, but Apple's choice is to limit your options. Apple builds into their products...a dependency on them and them alone. Just price out 8 gigs of ram from Apple and the same memory from Crucial or NewEgg. You pay at least twice the cost when you buy from Apple. Apple makes HUGE profits margins because of these controls and the consumers constantly having to buy a completely new product (MacPro, Air, etc.) from them if you want any kind of upgrade. Heck Obama and his cronies want parents to keep taking care of their children...even after they should be self-sufficient and self-reliant (allowing kids on health-insurance up to age of 26)

For anyone who has traveled the world...or even to Canada...they understand that the world DOE NOT actually revolve around the US.

For such a free country (as touted by many Americans even today), I find that the common US citizens are lying/fooling themselves. This country is moving more and more towards a government ruled society. Mostly due to lazy people who would rather the government take care of them....than being a self-sufficient/self-reliant person. This does NOT apply to ALL in the US, but there is a rapidly growing number of people in this group.

America was founded by people who knew that an individuals success was solely based on their own work ethic. Todays lazy POS just want to take the easy route and let the government take over where the weak parents left off. If I were wealthy enough...I'd be leaving this sinking ship as well.
