-Windows 8 will be fixed for the desktop with the "blue" update (even though I do not find Windows 8 bad at all)

-Their will be a large amount of quality OEM Windows 8 tablets for the Autumn / xmas 2013 market at the right price and quality point that will sell on mass.

- The iPad fad will fade rapidly when individuals realize the limitations of the devices, its starting to happen already like the iPhone fad passing...

Order will be restored. Maybe?

Lumia 820 rocks even easy to fix.

Just last week my wife broke the screen on her Lumia 820, thought it was the end of the world, she had to suffer an olde button handset for 3 days while it was fixed.

On the plus side it was an easy, relatively cheap fix, dropped it off at a local Nokia repair center they ordered the outer layer touch part of the screen fixed it up all for 70euros. The service guy said the phone is lovely to repair and really serviceable.

She is now happy, just raves about the phone, even droid and iphone users really like the package.

Their is a lot of old button phone users and this is where the Lumia 620 comes in, Nokia just needs to believe in the product and flood the worldwide market at the right price with the device and it will sell, Windows phone 8 is the best OS when upgrading from an olde push button phone.

Apple have nothing at the 150euro price point, all almost all the Android devices are cheap and nasty; the horrible Samsung Ace comes to mind.

Re: Laptops for Christmas?

Agree 100% I am seeing the post 2012 tablet buzz starting to fade. They devices were purchased in vast quantities however from what I have seen usage has dropped a lot, even including the worshiped iPad.

I would love some current web browsing stats on their usage.

Initial Tablet fizz fading....PC still No 1 for productive work

From what I am seeing the 2012 Christmas tablet buzz has faded. People who bought tablets over christmas now see their limitations, they like the convenience of them, however they realize their only a secondary device and not capable of long duration serious work.

The PC / Laptop (be that Windows, Mac or Linux OS) is still the defacto primary productive choice for 99% of individuals.

Windows 8 is actually fine once you learn a few shortcut keys.

The ultrabook prices are finally starting to drop, Dell Inspiron 15z is an example of a quality device well priced.

When touch becomes the norm on mainstream laptops I expect a jump in demand.

Still plenty of life in the PC / Laptop market once the product innovates like Windows 8.

Bad news: PC slump worse than feared. Good news: It's Friday

All hardware eventually fails and you ask anyone doing productive work what is their choice they will choose a laptop or PC (Windows, MAC, Linux: flavor of OS your choice) any day over a tablet.

The tablet is a secondary device used for messing around with while chilling on the couch, or commuting.

The PC market will pick up again when low priced touch and type laptops are available in abundance cheaply and that will happen this year. Windows 8 will be the route to this upgrade for most people.

I laugh when I read all those Windows doom mongers. Windows 8 is cheap stable and fast, metro takes a small bit of getting used to but nothing like the steep curve suggested by some people.

Running since launch on main desktop, no major probs

Been running on my main desktop, basic Fujitsu with Windows 7 32-bit pro, upgraded without issue since release date. Revise a few windows shortcut keys, setup a free Hotmail account and away you go.

I do not see the big issue, plus a friend of mine who bought a new laptop with Windows 8 (in his fifties that is not a techno head) adapted to the OS quiet well and was impressed with the way the Hotmail account linked to his Lumia 610 (basic phone I know) brought in all his contacts, calendar and mail all by supplying logon credentials, no need to search for POP3 settings and the like, with the whole ecosystem joined up, it works really well.

Ok metro can be annoying sometimes, however with a large monitor it gives a lovely browsing, app store experience.

Add in the low upgrade price, plus the speed of Windows 8 and it almost never crashes; this is no Vista OS its just their is a good few tech industry individuals with a Microsoft grudge.

Panasonic stuff bullet proof

Just talking to my local TV repair shop that has been in business over 30 years. He also repairs TV's and he swears by Panasonic, in all his time in business he has only one Panasonic TV that failed when in warranty and most are going 20-25 years after manufacture. They are one of the last manufacturers that actually makes all the components in their TV right down to the screws. Their R&D plant is also right beside their component manufacturing plant in Japan. No cheap Chinese lowest cost transistors allowed. A real shame their in trouble.

As for Sony they went the lost cost, buy cheap Chinese from the lowest price parts bin years ago so no surprise their....

Re: $499

" only run apps and MS office" that's the big beach head Microsoft have against the iPad.

They get the touch versions of Word and Excel bang on, they are on a winner because everyone still wants to use Word for docs and Excel for spreadsheets. All other office packages are 2nd rate...

Can see this giving Apple are right kick in the you know where?

NOKIA Up 4% in after hours trading today.

Of course no one reporting that these famous investment houses are now buying back in to Nokia up over 4% in after hours trading.

I think the new Lumia's look good. plus the Lumia 800 is a really excellent phone, have no issues with it whatsoever. Those criticizing Nokia should wait to see what Apple do with the iPhone 5 next week.

Smartphone running out of ideas

Its obvious the whole smartphone sector is starting to stagnate, Apple knows this so I cannot beat a competitor with innovation as the well is running dry, so it needs a victory in the courts.

The iPhone is rapidly heading down the iPod commoditization route so Apple needs massive market share but less profit per device to sustain the current share price.

Expect the iPhone 5 to be a damp squib. Hence the legal importance a bit of a pity really as Apple was once a great innovative company.

Death to Office or to Windows - choose wisely, Microsoft

A Butler

MS mad to support office in the ipad.

What a load of rubbish historically Microsoft has always played catch up; netscape, lotus 123, wordperfect, Novell, O2/2 I could go on however its always ended out on top.

Its like a big battle ship that takes time to maneuver in to place and fire back at new competing fronts, the guns are now trained on mobile and tablets and the game changer is Windows 8, Apple and everyone else knows it.

Windows 8 will run across PC, mobile and tablet and the rumour is that office (or a version of it) will be free on the tablet format to complement the mobile version.

So come this autumn we will have a flood of tablets from all the OEM’s running the excellent windows 8 ARM version with office fully integrated. Competing against the overpriced over hyped Ipad, and remember in this new world there is little loyalty so it the price and spec is right its Apple is the company that should be afraid.

In conclusion Microsoft would be daft to port office to the iPad. In “the noughties” Microsoft’s support of the Mac with office saved the ailing company no mention of that fact, they should not make the same mistake again.

Time Apple with their patent hungry lawyers got a good kick in the *******. Its coming.

"I can't wait until we leave this corrupt EU mess :)"

Yeah and dig up those fibre cables linking the london financial district to the rest of global financial economy; the UK biggest industry by far. Plus the euro goes down, it will pull every finance house in London down as well: Europes biggest financial services city and on to New York, the domino effect.

Oh yeah lets leave EU, like we do not need to be a trading global economy.

Best tablet that supports direct printing - HP not as dumb as you all think

I cannot believe no one has see the printing angle here, the touchpad has the best direct printing support of all tablets including the holy grail Ipad.

They get every punter to buy or hook a HP printer to the device then the money will come back on printer ink or toner.

For the record I paired my Touchpad with a HP Photosmart Wireless e-All-in-One Printer (CN245B) that once hooked up to my WI-FI, worked like a charm and at a brilliant price of 50euro.

The board: fire Apotheker over the weekend - reverse these changes.

Leo Apotheker has obviously had a mental breakdown.

HP the largest PC vendor and most efficient spinning off the business.

WebOS a great OS, the Touchpad while a bit bulky is brilliant (hand up I have one) however to kill the product less than 2 months after the US launch especially with the christmas market on the way and a lot of leverage on the price left, looney move.

Can the remaining board members of HP club together over the weekend and get rid of Apotheker, reverse these changes and heavily discount the touchpad. They want to kill off a division they can start with Itanium.

People don't want tablets, they want iPads

HP Touchpad is better than ipad - just give it a chance - printing its strength

I have a HP touchpad and beside from the lack of APPS (most are BS anyway). The tablet is brilliant with the multitasking card system, flash support, and a lovely keyboard.

If buying get the HP case with it as it really completes the package.

Plus unlike other tablets the printing support is excellent, however I do not see why HP do not support all manufacturers PCL 5 printing over TCPIP that would be an ipad killer. Even allow scripting by enthusiasts of other vendor solutions, and make it a central part of the webOS forum creating a community around mass PCL5 printing support; give people freedom to create and the iPad would be in trouble; HP are you listening because time is ticking.
