Apple loses sauce, BlackBerry squashed and Microsoft, er, WinsPhones (Nokia's)

vmistery

Very interesting thoughts. Personally for me Google has been the big winner this year with Chromebooks and Tablets and its new budget Android phone the Moto G, no doubt they will see a good 2014 but I suspect Android phone sales will decline somewhat if MS keep pushing lower end phones. Microsoft whilst struggling with Laptops / Desktops has finally managed to make a small dent in the Mobile market and has the chance to just have Nokia making Windows phones and gain the benefits from having as much control as Apple whilst being more flexible in models offered. Apple has stood still, I think the next two years are critical for them. If they don't manage to make big waves with something they might give Microsoft an opportunity to catch up - or perhaps a new party. Samsung have had a good year but I get the feeling they don't know why. They still have a far less refined Android experience on their phones than HTC or Motorola (I have the Samsung Note 3) and I can't see them going anywhere amazing next year. They need to work on timely updates and not filling their phones full of rubbish. They also are threatened on the low end by superior phones such as the Nokia 620 and the Moto G. HTC I suspect will get better as people forget how rubbish their first HTC was, especially if they concentrate on fewer phones. Blackberry have not had a good year, Can't see a way forward for them at the moment but suspect someone will buy them. Perhaps Samsung or HP / Dell (two other companies with not so promising futures).

Just my thoughts! Perhaps I should be an Analyst

HTC: Shipping Android updates is harder than you think – here's why

vmistery

If they did not have quite so many different models it wouldn't be so hard. Apples model works for a reason, it also doesn't help there is little financial benefit for HTC to keep their old kit up to date wheras Apple do.

My Note 3 can use MicroUSB and MicroUSB 3.

I rather had wished they would just make a better designed version of the microUSB port rather than another oddly shaped hard to plug in in the dark adapter.

Apple bests Dell for first time as preferred US consumer PC choice

vmistery

I don't desire any brand of PC in particular. I certainly can't imagine why you would desire a Dell or HP over anyone other PC manufacturer really considering the build quality issues they have both had in the past, from my experience anyway. I am not sure you can really have Apple in the list anyway as it is comparing a high end only product to something that can be at all extremes. I don't know, it leaves me a bit 'meh' as the kids say.

Beijing leans on Microsoft to maintain Windows XP support

vmistery

I can't imagine MS is going to want to extend the date further. At the end of the day XP was the last desktop OS that with a Volume License key you didn't need to activate the product (so no potential nasties lurking in your dodgy copy because you could use a proper clean one). However, I would support a move by MS to release an XP service pack 4 which added some of these 'features' in along with some beefed up security even for a fee as it would make life easier for a lot of people!

iPhone slips in Europe as Windows Phone claims OVER 10% market share

vmistery

Personally I dot around phones, Windows 5.5 on an iPAQ Messenger-> iPhone 3GS -> Galaxy S2 -> iPhone 5 -> Note 3 and I suspect others do too. Now the iPhone market is not really expanding as it is no longer the clear market leader there will naturally be some sway between it and Android but now Windows phone has hit maturity it seems and is offering devices that are both functional and cost effective (something that Android seems to lack other than the recently released Moto G) there has been sway towards that as well and I suspect it will continue to gain market share quite a bit over the next 18 months until it finds its share of the market. That is of course assuming no one comes along with something revolutionary which could happen. So in 2 years time I think we will see 3 primary Operating systems with Android and iOS slipping somewhat to Windows Phone.

I have to admit in house I much prefer supporting Windows phones / devices to either Android or iOS kit as it more nicely integrates. None of them cause me a major headache though and I would gladly sacrifice a few hours extra a year to have the choice

So, what is new in SQL 2014, exactly?

vmistery

Re: Only Microsoft?

But there are other readers and some may run multiple DB types. I for one in the Gas industry manage databases on PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle and Microsoft SQLServer. It just depends what I am using it for. It also doesn't mean it is any less mission critical.

Wait, what's that shuffling from 2013's gloom? It's a bloodied but unbowed HP

vmistery

Question is for HP really what will happen with Dell now its going private. Dell recently have been in my experience (I have just bought servers and new desktops / Monitors for a new office fit) savagely undercutting HP, either HP has been keeping their prices high or Dell have been trimming it really low.

What’s new in SQL 2014?

Re: Nomenclature for those who use

Absolutely 100% agree.

I think quite a lot of It is an issue of respect, I used to work for the NHS and consultants and Doctors thought that because you were in IT you were an idiot and something to be bullied as a lesser human being. Then you had the lower paid personnel who - although often less computer literate - were usually polite and well meaning. The key is to deal with the first group in a courteous and professional manner and if necessary raise a complaint afterwards. However you can only do that if you treat the later (and often frustrating group) of people in a friendly and helpful manner and not look down on them for not knowing how to right click.

Nokia Lumia 625: Quality budget 4G phone ... but where's UK's budget 4G?

vmistery

True for the moment but soon when 3 start rolling 4G out it won't be expensive and as it might even give them decent indoor coverage it might even be worthwhile using them. So you would ideally want a 4G handset ready for it or at least I would. 3 are essentially the budget Operator so they need budget phones too.

ZTE Open: This dirt-cheap smartphone is a swing and a miss

iPhone 5S: Apple, you're BORING us to DEATH (And you too, Samsung)

vmistery

But no one has hit the sweet spot yet and are just chasing the next flash bang whiz which most of us don't care about. There for me are a few glaring problems with mainstream phones that they could focus on:

1: The battery life

2: The robustness (my ip5 is terribly scratched even though its in a pocket all day!)

3: Signal strength - my N73 gets signal in places on the same network my iPhone doesnt. Why?

What Surface RT flop? Nokia said to be readying WinRT slab for September

vmistery

If the price is right, and I am talking £200-£250 then it *might* work, until it is that kinda tempting price it won't. If its not an iPad then it just has to be cheaper until it is well established and has a decent market share which seems to be what they don't understand at the moment. People won't pay a premium for something that does not have the premium brand appeal, deal with it MS.

And we would probably all bag a cool £5m each.

Having briefly had to 'support' some software written by the really 'quality' big vendors in the past too I am pretty sure we would do a better job and be far more flexible. For a start please no java!

AMD's newest chip: Another step toward 'transformation'

vmistery

AMD just took a different path to the lower power goal than Intel, Intel are pursuing efficiencies in x86 instead (I am not saying this is bad or not just different). What will be interesting is can AMD get back into the DC Market with this or into Tablets and phones which are not seeing massively declining sales, that is yet to be seen. Being inside the PS4 and Xbox One is a lifeline but I don't believe its enough to be a future.

Look out, Lenovo! HP: We're not happy with being a 'number two'

vmistery

I wouldn't buy Dell or HP Laptops / Desktops because they don't seem to care about what the SME market actually wants. Lenovo on the other hand sells good quality, reliable, easy to repair bog standard units for a decent price. They might not be that sexy, but really, who spends time looking at their desktop? I am just waiting for them to take on IBMs low end servers and really start pushing them into the UK channel.

Lenovo are not perfect however, they could work on their support website and have better customer support. I would also appreciate the return of their 'standard' non-widescreen 19" monitors at a more reasonable price!

I'd read the CV first to see if it is even worth watching the video. The video would probably help me not waste my time getting some of the candidates in to interview. We get a lot of people who I don't really like the look of the CV for one reason or another but their skills match, would give some of them a second chance to impress. All in all it could work out very well.

Re: good

Couldn't agree more. Other than the essentials bundles they offer it is extremely pricey. We have been looking at Proxmox ('free' but support costs) as an alternative and it seems very reasonable as a fire and forget solution for some production machines and its easier to secure if you want it on the net. Still looking for a good alternative to VMwares discontinued LabManager though, VCloud Director is truly terrible to support.

Insourced staff paid a pittance but don't want to leave

vmistery

Its really refreshing to hear other people also appreciate working for an in-house team in a SME as much I do. My salary might not be as high as it could be elsewhere but its not terrible and I am quite happy with it, especially as I know if I am ill I wont be interrogated on return and Management don't require endless statistics to prove the necessity for a new Mouse. As with all things its swings and roundabouts and you have to decide what's best for you in the long run but for me at the moment as an IT youngling (only 6 years in the post grad IT Industry) its a great way to be able to get hands on with every aspect of IT from Debian to Windows from Cisco to Juniper which working in a large outsourced department would not let me do. Ok so I drifted off topic there but basically well done for smaller companies giving in house IT a chance. We certainly save ours money.

Official: More than 7 million Brits have NEVER accessed the interwebs

vmistery

Re: @vmistery

if it exists!...

vmistery

I wonder how the question was worded. For example, my Grandparents who are over 75 have a Laptop but no internet connection at home, however I know that when they visit us they do go online for brief sessions on Google to find out the latest butterfly facts or something similar. If these people are considered to have 'never been online' because their use is so occasional I expect the real 'never been online' figures are lower. People like this often ring relatives or friends to get them to Google things for them or go down the Library to get their Internet Fix.

I guess I just find it hard to find such a large number believable.

Is this possibly the worst broadband in the world?

vmistery

Slow speeds are not just limited to the more rural areas though. In a town of 25000 it took BT till last may to enable us for ADSL2+.

We were slightly more lucky though as 3 weeks later they enabled us for FTTC. From 2Mbps to 76Mbps in a month although we are in a 'Market 2 Area' so I guess had a bt more of a chance of getting it than People in a Market 1 Area..

Microsoft pats self on back over Windows 8 sales

vmistery

Well I upgraded to Windows 8 as a test on my Desktop because its only £25 at the moment. I find the lack of a back button in the 'Modern UI' or whatever they call it now most annoying, this is probably because I am using a mouse not a touch screen. It also feels half done, the full control panel and all MS applets should have been migrated to the new interface rather than having half on the 'old' desktop and half on the new, its annoying and messy. The last thing I don't like is its close tie-in with Windows live, for one thing I dont like using the same password to login to my PC as I do for my email - but perhaps I am just paranoid. Will I go back? Well at the moment I dual boot but am trying hard to not use Win 7, as it takes my Win 7 installation an age to get going though this might be the motivation I need to stay with Windows 8 and keep 7 on for emergencies.

As for their celebrations? Have they realised its doing a Vista?

vmistery

Loved DS9, its actually the only StarTrek TV series I can still watch without cringing constantly at how perfect the Federation are. I loved the other Treks too back in the day (except the Original *cue scathing attacks*) . Also much enjoyed B5, never really thought of them as that similar. Thought DS9 got better with age where B5 for me peaked and then was on life support for the last couple of series. Also love Blakes 7, the original Dr Whos, FireFly and more recently Battlestar and A Town called Eureka

Basically - Up the SciFi!!!

We need more of it.
