Digital radio may replace FM altogether - even though nobody wants it

Daemon Byte

simple solution

surely is just to make all future radio sets (particularly those in cars) have to support dab as well as fm. Then when you want to switch in a few years it won't matter because everyone will have dab capacity. I doubt many of the general public care over if they get their radio via fm or dab. I suspect what they care about is right now they don't have dab capacity and it would be expensive to switch.

Re: how much skin do you need to have in the game ..

But think about it. If these people are doing what is actually best for the shareholder why would Ballmer and Gates (2 big shareholders) not already be doing that? Surely having a CEO and a Chairman who are both heavily invested in the company is a good thing as then they will be motivated to do what is best for the shareholders, ie themselves.

Netflix dares UK freetards: Watch new Breaking Bad NOW or torrent it?

Daemon Byte

I hope it works

Otherwise the freetards will just prove all the networks were right and they just won't pay whatever service is offered.

Google SELLS OUT the INTERNET HIPPIES! AGAIN!

Daemon Byte

depending how they implement it then it's reasonable

after all if it just targets people who have big servers as part of their business running on this consumer network then they should be stopped. They've already said this isn't about shutting down your minecraft server so I think they will allow you to use servers for personal use. They just have this clause to prevent a handful abusing the network with say a website hosting downloadfreemovies.com

Taiwanese uni sues Apple over FaceTime and QuickTime

Daemon Byte

Re: They may struggle with that one

Because video is video and that's it? I'm not saying that prior art doesn't exist but just saying video existed before doesn't cut it. WAV files existed before mp3 or wma but does that mean the latter 2 are just copies and not worthy of protection? If quicktime and facetime started to use the patented technique in their videos after the patent was granted then they deserve this. If they used the technique before then I agree with you. Does anyone know the methods used by quicktime and when they started doing it?

MWC 2013: The Chinese are coming - and you ain't seen nothing yet

Daemon Byte

Huawei are definitely an up and coming company in the consumer market but they still have to make it easier for the uninitiated. I have had their media pad tablet for at least a year now and it was a decent bit of kit that easily competed with the samsung galaxy but for half the price. Small snag is when I want to update the firmware (and I had to since the first few were very buggy) it meant going to the website, downloading the file, putting it onto an sd card, booting up, installing, clearing sd card and then reinstalling every app and setting I had. Compare that to HTC's notification on the phone, download, reboot done. But I think it will come and then the big boys will have to watch out. At least the US has already prepared: Ban that awesome phone from the US because it's Chinese spy tech!

Facepalm

because there is no reason to follow it even if there was sanctions they could just contract it out to a private firm and avoid it anyway. Pointless political headline scoring.

Tor node admin raided by cops appeals for help with legal bills

Maybe you're not familiar with tor's original supporter the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory? I highly doubt militaries are relying on it solely but I imagine it's a very good tool in an arsenal. Particularly if you need deninability.

Oi, Apple, stick to phones, forget about TV - Time Warner CEO

Mozilla: Windows 7 browser bungle cost us nine MILLION downloads

Daemon Byte

Have to agree. This is just FF trying to blame MS for their failings. Chrome has managed to catch up to them in a short time where as they seem to reckon they can only get people with the EU screen. I gave up on FF years ago and moved to Opera but now FF is my 4th browser of choice after Chrome and IE9

Andrew Jones, that's basically what will happen. Some companies will register names like .microsoft and keep them for themselves. Others will register names like .cymru then sell it off in the same way as .uk or .com

The Torvalds of Drupal pledges HTML5 mobile love

Daemon Byte

are you trolling

or genuinely clueless? Most drupal modules that are heavily used, particularly the ones in 7 are professionally built by drupal shops for customers who pay for that functionality or sponsor modules. That's not including all the google summer code projects and acquia modules. The you have the more simple side of it. Modules at best generate snippets of html code. There will be nothing in that code (since it will be match xhtml standards) that does not already drop into html 5. So that point is invalid anyway but since drupal seperates mark up out of modules into templates and theme functions even if some did need changing it would be very easy to do and the community would do it if the original module writer does not.

12% of UK don't carry cash

Daemon Byte

since moving to Norway

I haven't used cash in an eon. The assumption here is you will use a card or you will get a dodgy look from everyone like you were trying to barter. Even if it's as little as a £1. Bout time the UK caught up with the modern world. A card is far easier to use and more secure.

Ofcom moves: Rural broadband price war on the cards?

Daemon Byte
WTF?

Can someone explain the logic behind their reasons? Surely a cheaper BT means that there is less money and incentive for BT to upgrade systems, less incentive for people to set up their own networks and make it harder to compete? Surely the more BT charges the quicker it becomes cheaper to set up your own service, not the other way around?
