Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the biggest cause of accidental death outside of war is: You guessed it, car accidents. near 2million a year by some data. The only statistically significant impact of scaling the self driving car ecosystem will be a reduction in crashes and an increase of lives saved.

All those drug addled drivers targeting you and your family, yet you seem non plussed by that. Much easier to rage at headlines.

The biggest risk you and I take daily is getting on the road with lunatics and just hoping your number isn't up. Elon is solving that for ya. Driving will one day be remembered as a quaint thing we did for about 100 years, much like corsets or top hats.

I vote for change, bring on all the self driving. Good luck to Waymo, Zoox and Tesla coz god knows we need to stop the carnage somehow.

Sorry to inform you that 5000 people are killed daily by monkey brain drivers. Just doesn't effect you till it really does. I think this is a problem worth solving, don't you? I don't see them banning busses, yet they are driven off cliffs of a regular basis. My perspective is driving is dumb. Just like smoking. It kills you.

I guess where we differ is exactly what you highlight with scale difficulties waymo faces.

Let's just put everything aside and imagine if Tesla does manage to achieve its state of goals.

Can we not agree that, if their current stated plan and technology does actually work out, the path to scalability is more feasible for Tesla than waymo?

But I'm happy to accept that the majority of people here do not believe that Tesla have a snowflakes chance.

Hardly a conspiracy. I often visit El Reg to get a take on a tech development. I remember when all the El Reg forum hate was directed at google, you know, the good old days lol

I guess I just see the vertical integration as something quite hard to compare or compete with. Will it work? Let's see! I mean they produce more cars than Waymos fleet every few days. Is that not relevant when it comes to the potential for success? Remember when Blackberry was the corporate standard for Smart Phones, was even embedded throughout Government, then some dude called Steve launched a device without buttons. This forum went bananas I recall.

But looking at the comments, can suspect some of the readers are distracted from the actual tech play unfolding before us, and unable to detangle their emotions from it all.

OK Ill be back in a couple of years to pick up where we left off. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

OK first I agree CAPS are dumb. Genuine question. Do you think the delta between Waymo having a safety driver behind the wheel for 8 years of testing, vs Tesla having a supervisor in the passenger seat only from day one of roll out isn't significant?

Are you suggesting it will take years for Tesla to " catch up" to Waymos fleet because it took Waymo ages to get it together? Does Tesla have to follow in Waymos somewhat slow roll out because they are second to commercialize? Last I read Waymo have a limited fleet compared to the market potential. Truly help me understand why I shouldn't buy some shares (in Tesla) if I could please.

Have you gone back to look at the Waymo roll out? Genuinely interested to know if you have any idea how long it took them to take a safety agent out of the vehicle? Seems memories are short, or Im old, one or the other.

TLDR: Waymo used safety drivers for 8 YEARS, before removing a person from the driver seat. Meanwhile, Robotaxi...

Just seems to me to be a more scalable solution to autonomous vehicles. That all. I think the end-to-end solution they are working on could potentially work, But no one here is willing to consider this alternative (to coin a great album cover)
