US Navy preps railgun for tests

jungle_jim

sweet

another application of course that could come from this is a rail gun/coil gun assisted way into space.

of course it would have to be helluva lot longer for a more gentle accelleration but if you were to build a big one of these up the side of a mountain.....

agreed!

it is a shame really....

i bet the original mini would still sell.

lighter cars

i would love them to re release a few old school cars with modern engines.

i would PAY for a brand new MK1 escort with the only difference being it had a modern engine up front.

ok, so aerodynamics would be an issue, but i still reckon the urban MPG would be competitive!

and off the lights would give lots of stuff a good run for their money!

i will have to publish my MPG when my ghetto MK2 tina with modernish engine is done (800kg from the factory)

jungle_jim

just do what loads of people seem to be doing nowadays.

drive around with one (or more) light out. stupid cunts.

jungle_jim

well

the fucking car cost enough.... didn't want to pay for indicators as well did i?! people should keep out of my way anyway, as im a better driver.

i got 62mpg out of my old 120d on a run.

not impressed.

and yes i am aware the cars cost a lot different from new, but a 2l diesel nearly matching a 1.1l for economy.... meh

Funny fact 2

in my company, which has major hubs in the UK, NY and Singapore, we get the majority of our product from China, because it is cheaper and suppliers seems to react faster. On the flipside, i have a contract in SG atm because there has been a growing number of counterfeit products coming through.... they are getting better and better too.

I love gadgets and tech, but leave my car driving to me.

anything that makes a decision for me is wank, and people just tend to use it as an excuse when things go tits up as they invariably do.

and i dont mean i want to go back to carbs.

i mean when i boot a pedal i want it to have that effect, i dont want a computer asking "does the driver want to be flooring it?"

Viewsonic PLED W500 portable projector

jungle_jim

Furthermore, when i said 'projector lamps' i meant the mercury lamps. i thought that was pretty obvious as they are still the norm.

jungle_jim

you still gonna be using it in 15 years time?

will it kick out a lot of light for those 20000 hours? i have seen lots of LED car lights and traffic lights that are meant to last forever, and i see lots of the individual LED's have failed.

why not use them all the time? because you have to sit in a darkened room to get the most of it, even with a 'normal' projector lamp you would want to dim the ambient light.

jungle_jim
Pint

cool

i like the fact that the LED's are starting to improve, but they have a LONG way to go before they can kick out as much light as a mercury lamp (which most projector lamps are).....

Projector lamps last 2000 - 4000 hours on average.... 2.7 hours a day over 2 years and how often do you want to be watching 100" at home?

as a business tool though it must be pretty lush. id like to see a battery operated one of them.

VW Scirocco BlueMotion Technology TDI 140

jungle_jim
Happy

you're probably right

is it maybe they cant handle much power then? or there are huge transmission losses? these things must surely be superior from a keeping it in the efficiency and/or optimum power band vs a manual (or any gearbox with finite gears)

im off to do some reasearch as to what the flaw is... thanks

jungle_jim
Thumb Up

whats with all the gears?

I noticed people mentioning 8 gears on some of the new automatics....

why has no one developed a modern day variomatic yet? surely that would cane anything else, set the engine to its optimum RPM and let the infintely adjustable 'gearbox' (two cones on a belt) do the rest?

i have a 6 year old bmw 120d that will return 62mpg if i potter on the motorway at 60mph and hits 60 just over 7 sec mark. that, and it is correct wheel drive.

that said, ill be getting rid of it as soon as i have finished my saab powered mk2 cortina. thats even more environmentally friendly.
