Pirate Bay co-founder criticises Parler for its lack of resilience

Blank Reg

Re: Geeks versus Politicians

Although whoever provides internet connections to the new Parler servers could also rightfully shut them down if they choose to. They might have to become a tier 1 ISP themselves to avoid that possibility. Even then I'm not sure if they would be entirely safe.

Blank Reg

The Boston Tea Party was actually about taxes being too low. The duty on tea was drastically reduced, which caused the price of legal tea to drop thus making it hard for smugglers to make any money. It was the smugglers that were protesting.

Re: Disgraceful

That's the modern revisionist interpretation. It was about state slave militias, not so Joe redneck could carry any AR-15 to walmart.

Blank Reg

Re: Disgraceful

No it does not become a free speech issue because these companies aren't the government, and the first amendment is about the government not suppressing freedom of expression. Anyone other than the government has no obligation under the first amendment and are free to block you, ignore you, not publish your BS etc., no matter how much you may whine about it.

Why are so many Americans so clueless about their own constitution?

Blank Reg

free speech has limits, and lies should be called what they are. Not alternative fact, misinformation etc. Trump and his cronies should have been called liars from day 1 but the media didn't want to offend people. And the social media platforms should have cracked down on the blatant lies from the beginning, instead they were the primary channel to disseminate and amplify the lies.

now its too late and there are millions of people who have lost touch with reality.

You mean the almost universal GOTY that is TLOU2? We could use more of those kinds of "train wrecks". Unfortunately there are less than a handful of studios that can consistently produce that level of quality. And Sony seems to own most of them.

Elon Musk says he tried to sell Tesla to Apple, which didn’t bite and wouldn't even meet

Blank Reg

Re: Both SX and Tesla have come a very long way in 2 years

Yes, but Panasonic is hardly the only battery maker out there. Beside the names you know like LG, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba etc, there are also other very large battery makers like CATL and others.

It's not like these companies have been sitting around doing nothing all these years, they have their own fleet of scientists and engineers figuring out how to push the technology forward.

GM's new battery, which I think are being developed with LG, are supposed to be much cheaper than any other current tech. And I'm sure they are not alone. Everyone is trying to make the big breakthrough that would make EVs viable for almost anyone. It would surprise me to see companies like Duracell or Energizer jump in to the market.

Earlier this year Sony showed off an EV at CES. Though I believe it was meant as a showcase for their cameras and sensors, they are actually in a better position to make a car than Apple is as they have a lot of relevant technology already.

Blank Reg

Re: Both SX and Tesla have come a very long way in 2 years

Given the poor build quality of their vehicles I don't know that anyone would be interested in their manufacturing technology. Even their battery technology is likely going to be eclipsed by the big battery makers now that they have taken an interest in this market.

Re: "Dependable store of value"?

Shares yes, currency not likely.

Every day there are about $5 trillion dollars worth of currency traded. Even dumping one billion in one day would barely be noticed if it's any of the top 10 currencies. Spread it over a week and it's a rounding error

Apple appears to be charging Brits £309 to replace AirPods Max batteries, while Americans need only stump up $79

Re: This is a crime against the planet

The level service depends on the company. The last item I had that failed under warranty was a top end Logitech web cam. I contacted support, told them that I'd tried it on two different computers, and the audio didn't work, meanwhile my other identical web cam worked fine on both. So they just shipped me a new one and never even asked for the old one back.

Trump fires cybersecurity boss Chris Krebs for doing his job: Securing the election and telling the truth about it

Blank Reg

Re: If the election was national

Or they could have an independent, non-partisan organization that handles elections. The would decide on locations and number of polling stations, set uniform voting rules and most importantly decide on the redistricting without taking into account which kind of voters live where.

But that will never happen. Without gaming the system republicans would never win again.

Blank Reg

Re: You see Trump, now blaiming the voting machines.

We can look to history to see what happens when the two ends of the economy grow too far apart. It usually ends with those at the top having heads separated from bodies, or some other equally grisly end.

They could easily avoid that by paying more taxes, or in too many cases start paying taxes. And maybe not be too quick to offshore making their widgets just to make an extra 2% profit.

yes, as long as they admit guilt then I think they can be pardoned.

We've made it: Microsoft deems El Reg relevant enough to have a play with the nerfed version of its upcoming Xbox

Exclusives are the main reason to pick one console over another. So as Microsoft has no exclusives then there is little reason to own an xbox.

Sony has been releasing older titles to PC recently, but I suspect a large part of the reason for that is to entice PC gamers to get a Playstation so that they can play the latest iterations of these older games without having to wait 4 or 5 years for a PC release.

H2? Oh! New water-splitting technique pushes progress of green hydrogen

Blank Reg

Re: Producing hydrogen is a stepping stone

Yes it is, You're actually better off capturing the methane and burning it than letting the methane go into the atmosphere, the net impact of the CO2 from burning it is less than that of the Methane itself. And in the process you can generate electricity. It's not at all carbon neutral, but if you've got the methane you might as well use it rather than let it escape.

And it's not just the thawing tundra that is a potential source. We have lots of it under the oceans and those deposits are becoming unstable

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methane_clathrate#Methane_clathrates_and_climate_change

Blank Reg

Re: Liquid hydrogen

Yup, making Hydrogen could be free, but you still have the issue of liquifying it and keeping it that way. That takes plenty of energy that needs to be accounted for.

Blank Reg

Such Hydrogen leakage is too small to pose any serious risk in most applications. And if there is a major leak, gasoline is far more likely to pose a problem than Hydrogen. It's actually not that easy to get Hydrogen to burn or explode, gasoline on the other hand is easy, and it burns for much longer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bFJK5kU_UQ&feature=emb_err_woyt

The real issue with Hydrogen is storage density. There are number of proposed solutions, but we're still waiting for one to take off.

Republicans have been doing this sort of stuff for years, its the only way that they can win.

That's why they are always accusing the democrats of election fraud, they have been cheating for so long that they just can't fathom anyone running for office without cheating.

luckily their supporters are dying off at a greater pace than average, so it's only a matter of time before they become irrelevant.

Trump administration proposes H-1B visas go to highest-paid workers first

Blank Reg

Let’s check in with that 30,000-job $10bn Trump-Foxconn Wisconsin plant. Wow, way worse than we'd imagined

Security much? Twitter should have had a CISO to prevent Bitcoin hack, says US state financial body

Blank Reg

Isn't it funny how Biden possibly having met a Ukrainian energy exec is a scandal to the republicans, but they seem to be just fine with every one of trump's associates having Russian connections. And it's highly likely that trump himself is in deep debt to Russians. And of course there is the Russian backed disinformation campaign that played a part in his getting elected. But that's ok according to the republicans

That's not going to happen until governments start issuing their own. Even then it will take a while.

Even pro-crypto web sites only list a hand full of places to spend your bitcoin, So few that they can all fit on one infographic.
